Biden: LGBT Discrimination the 'Civil Rights Issue of Our Time'

Vice President Joe Biden spoke to the mother of a transgender woman shortly after leaving a campaign office in Sarasota Florida, according to a VP press pool report obtained by Towleroad:

BidenHe singled one woman out who he thought had beautiful eyes. She said something to her at first inaudible to pool, to which VP responded was the "civil rights issue of our time"

Pool later asked the woman, Linda Carragher Bourne of Sarasota about the exchange. She said her daughter was Miss Trans New England and asked if he would help them.

"A lot of my friends are being killed, and they don't have the civil rights yet. These guys are gonna make it happen," she told the pool.

Chris Johnson at the Blade adds:

According to LinkedIn, a Linda Carragher Bourne works as a freelancer writer in Sarasota and is an editor a Self Magazine, an magazine for women’s health and fitness. The most recent winner of Miss Trans New England, according to the pageant’s website, is Nicole Hamidi.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Biden’s reference to the “civil rights issue of our time” was meant to indicate LGBT discrimination in general or, more specifically, transgender discrimination.

  1. You know, I read this and my eyes tear up because I have lived to see that LGBT people are finally being considered as human beings worthy of respect and worthy of full civil equality.

I guess it's because I remember when it wasn't so and across several decades it has been a tense aspiration that the prejudices born out of the ignorance fueled largely by christian bigotry might finally be dissipated and washed away into the waters of historical irrelevancy.

I, for one, appreciate that VP Biden recognizes our struggle as "the civil rights issue of our time". Especially if VP Biden and all of us recognize that the "T" is as important as the "LGB" of our collective equation.

I hope I will live to see our full civil rights become a factual, concrete reality and, henceforth, a given in any discussion within the American body politic.

  2. Just a small correction, I am the Original Miss Trans New England 2009, it was my own dear Mom who spoke to the Vice President. And as the aforementioned Miss Trans New England, I would like to thank Vice President Biden for his words in support of Transgender Civil Rights! Also, for his apparently excellent taste in singling my Mom, Linda Carragher Bourne out from the crowd! Slainte Mr. Vice President! Trans Rights Now!

  3. I love that gregarious Irish American, Joe Biden. Along with Barack Obama he is another example of how a man lives and supports family values.

  4. Maybe Lorelei could fill in the blanks about what it is that the VP labeled the "civil rights issue of our time.". I feel like the statement could have meant sexual equality (between male/female and trans/intersexed/cis-gendered people). Or it could have meant hate crimes protection for all Americans, or it could have been a lot of other things. Just knowing that he used the phrase while addressing a family with a transgendered member doesn't tell us much without the context.
