Ohio GOP Senate Candidate Josh Mandel Opposes 'DADT' Repeal and Marriage Equality But Promises to Stand Up for Gays: VIDEO

Mandel

Ohio GOP Senate candidate opposes LGBT rights but still believes he can to represent every single person in the state, Think Progress reports.

Said Mandel in debate this week:

On the military side, I disagree with [DADT repeal]. As far as the decision here in state of Ohio, I’m a supporter of marriage between one man and one woman. I believe in traditional marriage. At the same time, I want you to know I will do everything I can to represent every single person in the state of Ohio — all 11 and a half million people. Regardless of their background, regardless of their socioeconomic background, regardless of their race, their religion or any other characteristic…I’m going to be blind to race, religion, any other type of orientation here in the state of Ohio and when I go to Washington.

  4. Sounds like he's going to be blind to everything except money when he gets to Washington.

  5. Sadly, that's the best candidate money can buy for the Republicans in Ohio. And outside groups have given him more than $20 million dollars. He now so indebted to outside groups he won't have time to represent anyone from Ohio because he'll be busy protecting his money men.

  6. Is he 15?

  7. This is almost as amusing as the local paper in Eastern Ohio calling Mandel a "political moderate."

  8. Watch his Fox and Friends interview on YouTube.

He says the phrase "shoving down the throats" four freaking times.

    He's a future toe-tapper or wide-stancer for sure.

  9. We need a moratorium on closeted homosexuals running for office on anti-gay platforms. Perhaps a litmus test: Would you fit right into Log Cabin or GoProud without losing a beat? Will you be "out and proud" in 5 years?

Perhaps a moratorium on "stupid' as well. You can't advocate for people -- any people -- and simultaneously oppose their basic rights. Can anyone say "cognitive dissonance?"

  13. Josh Mandel is an opportunistic piece of slime that runs for the sake of running and the Rethuglican super-PACS have poured in nearly 30 not 20 million dollars to defeat Senator Brown. Mandel is a snarky, nasty bitter man who will do or say anything to get elected. His commercials run non-stop in Cleveland and Columbus and is trying to buy the election because he has no beliefs that haven't been forged by goons who control the purse strings.

  14. *Sigh* Why do they even bother? Hiding in the closet kind of implies that you can successfully pass for straight. This guy doesn't have a prayer. If there was a yard-high neon sign over his head, flashing on and off and reading HOMO, it wouldn't be much more obvious.

  15. Young and stupid. Maybe after he's able to shave he'll act more grown up.

  16. Seems like "representing everyone" has become a necessary talking point, but empty promise. Even if his intention is to represent everyone (doubtful), the pressure from his Republican colleagues and his deep-pocketed funders to advance the Tea Party false Christian agenda will make that impossible.

Bottom line: you are lying - you cannot represent everyone when holding such bigoted views.

  17. The guy is obviously a self-hating gay man. As for "representing all his constituents" please Mary!

  18. He's a Republican homophobe. I'll bet he bends over for gays regularly.

  19. not sure why everyone is calling him a closeted person and too young...there are plenty of older people who have similar views /shrug

  20. How does one protect and support all tax-paying citizens while keeping some from entering into private marriage contracts as well as serving in the military?

    Posted by: J. Alan | Oct 19, 2012 10:49:12 AM

  21. I don't think that it is fair to call him gay or closeted just because he is young and boyish. The stereotype does not always apply. But it is certainly reasonable to call him an idiot if he really thinks that he can represent a certain demographic while actively trying to push that demographic back into a closet and then nail the door shut.

his paternal grandfather similarly said "I don't believe y'all negroes should be free, but I promise to represent y'alls, sorta, and stand up for you, as slaves. which i thinks you should bes"

    so piss off.
