News: 'Ex-Gay' Suit, Altitude, One Billion, '30 Rock'

1NewsIcon A California counseling student named Aaron Blitzer claims he was "cured" of his gay desires by "ex-gay" reparative therapy, wants to spread the practice as his career, so now he's suing the state to overturn their recently passed law banning the notably harmful therapy for minors.

1NewsIcon Country crooner and Nicole Kidman husband Keith Urban loves all the "passion" seen on American Idol. Oh, and he thinks Randy Jackson is "the craziest."

1NewsIcon As NBC's hit sitcom 30 Rock begins its final season, AfterElton compiled its gayest moments.

1NewsIcon This is old, but I haven't seen it anywhere and it's worth a look because it's so ridiculous. An anti-gay activist in Maine claims marriage equality leads to socialism. "Eleven other countries have passed gay marriage: Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa and Sweden," writes Erick Bennett. "Passing gay marriage is not the only thing they have in common: They are also ranked the most socialist countries on earth. So what does socialism have to do with same-sex marriage?"

Thefour1NewsIcon Marriage numbers.

1NewsIcon There are now officially one billion people on Facebook.

1NewsIcon An estimated 47,000 women die while getting unsafe abortions each year.

1NewsIcon Karl Frisch breaks down the numbers on equality-related laws, and reminds the presidential candidates that gay and lesbian people, particularly parents, are voters too and concerned with issues other than just marriage: "With so much at stake for LGBT people and numerous historic electoral wins on the horizon this fall, shouldn’t President Obama and Mitt Romney have a frank discussion about issues important to LGBT Americans and their families?"

1NewsIcon In other number news, about 30,000 people are expected to attend Disneyland's 15th annual gay day this year.

1NewsIcon Al Gore blames President Obama's poor debate performance on Denver's altitude, which is plausible.

Daley1NewsIcon British diver Tom Daley recently romped around the beach and looks as good dry as he does wet. Well, almost.

1NewsIcon Francois Lebel, mayor of Paris' 8th district, has come out against gay marriage there, saying that allowing same-sex nuptials would open the door to bestiality and the such: "Why [if gay marriage passes] would the legal age for marriage be maintained? And why forbid marriage between close relations, paedophilia or incest which are all still common currency in the world."

1NewsIcon Which LGBT people oppose marriage equality? "Only 20% of LGBT respondents self-identify as Republicans but 51% of LGBT people opposed to marriage equality are Republicans. Looking at it another way... while only 9% of LGBT Democrats oppose marriage equality, 35% of LGBT Republicans oppose it."

1NewsIcon Well, at least Joe Biden thinks President Obama did a good job during the debate: "I thought the president did a great job last night making clear that our country faces the starkest choice in my memory."

  1. Tom Daley is IN Australia, but not FROM there. He's a Brit.

  2. The "Australian Swimmer Tom Daley" would actually be the British (Olympic Bronze medalist) Diver Tom Daley, who is training in Australia...

  3. Thomas Daley is british not australian. Either way the young man is very hot and down to earth.

  4. The Dieux du Stade link takes you to the Tom Daley article. Can you fix that?

  5. Several of your links are really messed up.

  6. Seriously, clicking links in your news posts are always a gamble. Step up your game, Towleroad.

  7. The link to Dieux du Stade is going to Tom Daley! Enough already of him!

  8. I can relate to the idea that the altitude of Denver could really mess someone up.

When I moved to a similar place, I was sick for months. I was ready to go to the ER at one point, when a family member told me that they had a similar experience visiting a place at a similar altitude. We both also tend to get motion sickness.

Something about the President's expressions during the debate seemed familiar to me. I can tell you, if you're one of the minority of people affected this way by altitude, it can be a pretty horrible experience.

If this is the case, it could certainly work in BO's favor in later debates, which always matter more than the first one anyway.

  9. Indeed. Where is the correct link for the Dieux du Stade boyz? Sheesh.

  10. The real news about Facebook is not that they've hit 1 billion users, it's that today they started testing Promoted Posts for users, which means you will have to pay to get your posts distributed to all of your friends.

Charging people is going to be the final straw for Facebook.

  12. Al Gore probably shouldn't be offering idiotic sounding theories as to why Obama came in second according to pundits in the debate. It's embarrassing.

The figure for abortion deaths is worldwide, not US, so not really in our control. Most of these deaths are simply because of poor health services overall. Countries like China, that essentially have mandatory abortions and 3rd world medicine, will greatly increase the stats on this number. Meanwhile 100,000 people per year die in the US due to medical malpractice. Similar figures in the EU for people who die on wait lists or other rationed care situations.

  13. The comment about marriage and socialism is stupid. Economic Freedom of the World, which rates levels of economic freedom, indicates that Canada is more economically free than the United States. In addition, top ten economically free countries include New Zealand and the UK, both of which are set to legalize gay marriage and both of which currently have civil unions.

Anyone who looks at the stats would find that as economic freedom rises, support for gay rights increases. At the bottom of the economic freedom list is Zimbabwe, a socialist dictatorship that arrests gays.

  14. Bilerico says (re anti-equality gay Republicans):
"To begin, it's extraordinary to find that 85% of any group of people holds the same opinion on any issue - and 85% of the LGBT respondents support allowing same-sex couples to marry."

I don't think it's extraordinary at all. A false parallel exists in the paragraph after that one when a comparison is made to how many blacks support race-based affirmative action.

What 85% of gay people want is to NOT be singled out for inferior treatment under the law.

An appropriate parallel would be to look at how many blacks believe blacks should be allowed to vote or how many women believe that women should be allowed a driver's license.

  15. Of course the little "ex-gay" boy wants to pursue a career in the "ex-gay" industry and is pissed off that his income stream may be in jeopardy. The only people who seem to maintain an "ex-gay" identity for more than five years are those who have turned it into a career and have their financial security fully invested in the charade.

    Posted by: TampaZeke | Oct 4, 2012 9:49:36 PM

  16. What percentage of self-loathing homosexuals oppose marriage equality? And how many of those people are included in the stats above?

    Posted by: Michael | Oct 4, 2012 10:26:14 PM

  17. Check out the commenters over at that Bilerico article - the radical "Queers" are all upset because the gay masses don't agree with their opposition to the "heteronormative patriarchal" institution of marriage! It always amazed me how smug the radical "queer" academics were and how divorced they were from the reality of lives of 99% of gay people.

  18. Dear Aaron Blitzer: You must be in a counseling program which flouts the professional norms of psychiatrists and psychologists. (The article notes that one of your co-plaintiffs is a psychiatrist - he's just asking for an investigation for misconduct!) You will not be licensed upon completion. As such you will not be able to form a career in "ex-gay" work. So sorry.

  19. "So what does socialism have to do with same-sex marriage?"

    nothing

    "marriage equality leads to socialism"

if anything your "evidence" is all in the other direction

  20. @"THEGAY" Until Mr. Gore and you mentioned this, I had not considered it as a possibility. But, it IS a very good possibility!

I have traveled to South America on several occasions. I visited Cusco Peru and La Paz Bolivia and various places in between and I had forgotten how affected I was by the altitudes.

An interesting theory and you're right: Mr. Obama did what was a political "rope-a-dope". I'm confident in the next debate, he'll chew up Mitt Romney and spit him out all over Paul Ryan's P90X DVD's.
