RoadAlex Ross on the gay rights transformation of America: "Today, gay people of a certain age may feel as though they had stepped out of a lavender time machine. That’s the sensation that hit me when I watched the young man in Tempe shout down a homophobe in the name of the President-elect. Gay marriage is legal in six states and in Washington, D.C. Gays can serve in the military without hiding their sexuality. We’ve seen openly gay judges, congresspeople, mayors (including a four-term mayor of Tempe), movie stars, and talk-show hosts. Gay film and TV characters are almost annoyingly ubiquitous. The Supreme Court, which finally annulled sodomy laws in 2003, is set to begin examining the marriage issue. And the 2012 campaign has shown that Republicans no longer see the gays as a reliable wedge issue: although Mitt Romney opposes same-sex marriage, he has barely mentioned it this fall. If thirty-two people were to die today in a mass murder at a gay bar, both Obama and Romney would presumably express sympathy for the victims—more than any official in New Orleans did when, back in 1973, an arsonist set fire to the Upstairs Lounge."

  1. VH1 Divas is a joke. The "divas" are not divas at all. They are fake divas. They cannot hold a note and are the product of AutoTune and other tricks. A real diva can hold a note without any assistance from technical trickery.

It's sad to see Adam Lambert descend to hosting fake shows like this. I know you might be keen for publicity, Adam, but how about taking on the homophobic music industry as a whole rather than be a part of its fakery?

  2. While it's true that the local nongay community, including churches, reacted with indifference to the New Orleans fire, it's time to end the myth that it was an antigay act. It's believed that a GAY man started it, a hustler named Rogder Dale Nunez, because he'd been thrown out of the bar earlier. "In 1970 he was diagnosed with 'Conversion Hysteria,' and four months before the fire he had visited a psychiatric clinic. When questioned, Nunez went into convulsions and was taken to Charity Hospital, where he eventually slipped out from doctor's watch and was never picked up again by police, despite frequently appearing in the French Quarter afterwards. A friend later told investigators that Nunez confessed to the deed while drunk on at least four occasions. He had told a friend, Miss Fury, that he squirted the bottom steps with Ronsonol bought at a local Walgreens and tossed in a match. He didn't realize, he claimed, that the whole place would go up in flames. Nunez killed himself a year later. His autopsy revealed a brain tumor."

  3. Jason/Rick's misogynistic and homophobic rants are so predictable. Let's just ignore him.

He's not actually a gay person, because he finds gay sex repulsive and hates gay people. He's just a troll. And a lousy one at that.

  4. Ross's piece would be more interesting if it didn't degenerate into a promotional piece for Halperin, and his quixotic quest to keep homosexuality isolated from mainstream society.

I don't think anyone - gay or straight - should aspire to be average. That's a terrible message. Nor do I view identification with Judy Garland an act of significant rebellion. She's just an actress, and it's just a movie with singing.

  5. My own gay identity isn't the simple life of the suburbs or the Fire Island-antics of the Manhattan boys. It's cosmopolitan, thoroughly modern, and thoroughly connected with people who are different from me. That is the real ideal of gay identity: to be able to engage and associate with difference, not replace one form of conformity for another.

  6. Thanks, Michael. I just spent 15 minutes reading about a moment in Gay history that I knew nothing about. It was truly tragic. It doesn't surprise me that some families didn't even come to identify or claim their dead sons because they were Gay.

Hopefully, the story will be told on film one day.

  7. I don't blame those voters for being pissed at the *special celebrity treatment* Usher got. I've experienced something similar, although I hadn't been waiting as long as those voters. I was taking the train from Philadelphia to NYC, and I got in line 45 minutes early so I could be the first to board the train and get a good seat. The line behind me got long very quickly, so I was glad I had gotten in line when I did. Then about 3 minutes before boarding, up walks Michael Imperioli from The Sopranos, and he was allowed to board the train first. What, like he's some superstar that's going to make the crowds go crazy if he has to stand in line?

  8. I don't even like the "gay" word. It's become a brand, much like an item in a supermarket. Since when is the male homosexual act a brand?

  9. Rove's return on investment (ROI) was -98.71%.

    ROI = (Gain - Cost)/Cost

For a ROI of 1%, American Crossroads would have to possess its original investment PLUS 1%.

    ROI is explained here: http://www.investopedia.com/terms/r/returnoninvestment.asp#axzz2BlUv91gh

  12. Seems AFER is wrong about the MD marriage date. From the Washington Post:

"Under existing marriage law in Maryland, a license does not take effect until two days after it is issued. Moreover, Jan. 1 is a state holiday, and the courthouses will be closed.

So here’s the upshot: A license issued on Jan. 2 would not become effective until Jan. 4, according to David Paulson, a spokesman for the Maryland Attorney’s General’s Office, which has been looking into the issue."

  14. Re: Divas - that word always seems to have a bad connotation to it, why do women want to be known as "divas?"

Re: Lemmon - sorry, I don't watch CNN and many people don't. I wouldn't know that guy is if I was alone in an elevator with him. Maybe Jonah just doesn't know who the eff he is. Get over yourself Lemmon.

  15. The SF archbishop his holiness is wrong again. There is an interesting clip of a forum in Britain where Christopher Hitchens attacked the Church right in the face of the archbishop there.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH6DI37bK6I&feature=relmfu
He reminded the Church that the Pope in 2000 has apologized for the Crusade, Inquisition, persecution of the Jews etc and suggested a few more apologies they should make. One of them is their treatment of gay people.

  17. I think the media may be misinterpreting the moon news. I may be mistaken, but I'm not sure they're planning a base on the moon. The outpost they're talking about in the news releases would be a space station beyond the far side of the moon -- at the L2 point -- where it would serve as a gateway for manned missions beyond the Earth system, first to an asteroid and then to Mars -- aaaaand beyond. :)
