News: Lindsay Lohan, Mitt Romney, Mercury, Scorpio Sky

Senator-Elect Tammy Baldwin, US Rep-elect Mark Takano and Ambassador David Huebner, all of whom are openly gay, will speak at the Victory Fund’s LGBT Leaders 2012 Conference, which starts today.

RomneyWHMitt Romney stopped by the White House for a 70-minute lunch with President Obama. The campaign rivals had turkey chili and reportedly talked about "America’s leadership in the world and the importance of maintaining that leadership position in the future." The White House says the men "pledged to stay in touch, particularly if opportunities to work together on shared interests arise in the future." I have the same arrangement with summer camp friends from 1994.

According to Dr. Sylvia Rhue, her family history proves that Abraham Lincoln was gay and had an affair with William Herndon, his law partner.

David Petraeus wrote to a friend about his recent fall from grace, "I screwed up royally. I paid the price (appropriately) and I sought to do the right thing, at the end of the day... [But] Team Petraeus will survive though have obviously created enormous difficulty for us. Holly is however once again demonstrating how incredibly fortunate I was to marry her."

RebelDetailsRebel Wilson's on top of the world, and actually deserves to be there.

Low level pro-wrestler Scorpio Sky knows "faggot" is offensive, which is why he uses it early and often.

Sure, Jude Law, you're not as young as you used to be, but you still look pretty darn good.

NYU student Blake Pruitt talks to gay men about gay men.

Sigh. Lindsay Lohan, an actress I really wanted to see have a comeback, was arrested after getting into a bar brawl in New York City. That brawl was reportedly over Max from the band The Wanted.

Meanwhile, Lohan also faces charges for lying about a car accident in Los Angeles.

George Zimmerman is selling autographs to fund the team defending him for Trayvon Martin's murder.

Ellen DeGeneres shares road signs warning wheelchair-bound citizens of incline-assisted alligators and other out-of-the-ordinary public alerts.

Britney and Will.i.am, "Scream and Shout," the video.

Braison Cyrus, brother of Miley and son of Billy Ray, makes his modeling debut in the February edition of Troix magazine.

NASA's Messenger rover found enough ice at Mercury's poles to fill the Dead Sea.

SpierDemocratic Rep. Jackie Spier introduced a "Stop Harming Our Kids" resolution today that aims to stop "ex-gay therapy" for minors. "Any effort to change sexual orientation is not medicine, it’s quackery, and we should not be supporting it with taxpayer dollars," said Spier.

Terrible: 60% of youth infected with HIV in 2010 are African-American. "Nearly 29,000 new cases of HIV, the AIDS-causing virus, were attributed to gay and bisexual males in 2010, and 82 percent of those cases occurred in large cities," US News and World Report reports.

With marriage equality set to become the law of the land, Washington state is considering gender-neutral language for marriage and divorce certificates. "Our fight for marriage equality is in part a fight for gender equality, not just for the gay and lesbian community. It is a fight for equality of sexes and the idea that marriage does not in itself mean that women are subjugated to men," said State Rep. Jamie Pedersen.

  1. "According to Dr. Sylvia Rhue, her family history proves that Abraham Lincoln was gay and had an affair with William Herndon, his law partner"

LOL. The "proof" consisted of hearsay from this woman. Nothing more.

And no, if Lincoln had loving relationships/friendships with other men, which may sometimes have involved sexual expression and other times not, he most definitely was not "gay" in the contemporary sense, since most "gay" men in our time dislike men, have difficulty forming any emotional bonds with other men (and idolize women in preference to men), objectify men sexually.....and as a consequence tend to have lives characterized by a series of empty sexual encounters that consist of each man using the other, without any emotional bond existing at all.

The kind of relationship Lincoln may have had with other men, however, is exactly what men in the present day should aspire to, however, a sort of emotional intimacy that can exist only between two men and that is not possible between a man and a woman. And hopefully that is what we are evolving towards again.

  2. The NASA "Messenger" craft is an orbiter not a rover.

  3. Lindsay Lohan has always been stupid white trash but now she's sinking even lower. No wonder she voted for Romney - they both deserve each other !

  4. Rick's comments should come with a little waving flag so that I know to just skip over the ensuing homophobia within them.

  5. I hope this is the most shallow thing I think or say this month: I thought black & white photography typically makes people look better ... but what's with the bad skin on nearly all those guys in that NYC video? B&W is not helping.

  7. I lost interest in Rebel Wilson when she and Matt Lucas thought it was HySTERical keeping their working neighbors up at night by behaving like overprivileged, drunken, enty assholes. I'll take Mindy Kaling instead.

  10. "NYU student Blake Pruitt talks to gay men about gay men." This is one of the few times I've been able to look at 20-something gay guys and see a former part of me because I was very much the way they are today when I was in my early twenties. I considered myself handsome, athletic, masculine, and nothing like the gay stereotype I had in my head but in reality, I was the stereotypical gay guy. That changes with age and maturity.

Now at 30 my life is far different. Married, with a child, happy, in love with a man I privately feel was far beyond my reach, I am quite fulfilled and very much loved. We retain a substantial group of gay and straight friends, it is rare that I feel any jealousy or discomfort over newly introduced and blatant "see me see me see me" gay friends. In SF gay bars the majority of gay-only bars have faded away resulting in intermixing and openly accepted by all gay or straight. Greg and I have straight male friends who go nuts when we show up on a late Saturday afternoon at a straight sports bar. Ten years ago if we walked into a straight sports bar holding hands or with an arm over the other's shoulder we could easily expect to be shunned - even ridiculed.

Being gay today is a far cry from what it was ten years ago and even farther 20/30/40 years ago when gay people were lynched, beat up, spit on and freely discriminated against. If you are gay today you thank your lucky stars. You have a wonderful life a head of you.

  11. Oh man! Well, the quiet lasted for a little while. Rick/Jason has been sprung from the institution and will fill our stockings with a heaping helping of dribble this holiday season. God bless us, everyone!

  12. This is Scorpio Sky's Twitter address. He CLAIMS to be all Christian but as usual he's CINO (Christian in Name Only) and continues to promote hate and violence towards gay people. Tweet him on @ScorpioSky.

I also wrote to his employer and complained that they were giving him a platform to preach his hate. Their email is [email protected] I reminded them about mainstream media adding to the number of gay teen suicides and their responsibility to stop it.

  13. I have no problem believing Lincoln was gay/Bi. But this so-called "new evidence” doesn’t pass the smell test. We are asked to believe that he and Herndon were lovers because "this information was handed down from GENERATION TO GENERATION in the Herndon family" when even in 2012 many families don't know about/discuss their members who are gay. Sexual relations between men weren’t just a crime in Illinois when Lincoln and Herndon were law partners, carrying a sentence of one year to life in prison, but such behavior was also considered ineffably shameful. Even thirty years after Lincoln’s death the state supreme court spoke of “due regard to the sentiments of decent humanity, [a crime] not fit to be named. The existence of such an offense is a disgrace to human nature. … the records of the courts need not be defiled with the details of different acts which may go to constitute it."

The author’s analogy to the relationship of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings is absurd. Evidence of biracial conception was VISIBILE in her children. But if Herndon and Lincoln had a sexual relationship, not only was there no physical evidence, but it would also be 10,000 times more likely that Herndon told NO ONE in his family, that he ferociously kept it a secret rather than tell a family member who passed such a revelation onto their children who passed it onto theirs who passed it onto theirs through decade after decade of rabid homophobia when commitment to a mental hospital was added to imprisonment as a possible penalty. Rather than the slave side of the Hemmings story, Herndon’s likely behavior would have been more like Jefferson’s—who, apparently, never acknowledged his relationship with Hemmings TO ANYONE.

Further, contrast Herndon’s ALLEGED ahistorical openness with his contemporary and fellow Lincoln idolizer, the now hallowed Walt Whitman. WHILE publicly celebrating male-male intimacy in his poetry, and privately having sex with several young men, he was denying in private letters to John Addington Symonds that those poems ACTUALLY meant gay sex, was making up stories about having fathered several children, and constantly coding, changing the gender, and erasing passages in his diaries for fear FUTURE generations [like those alleged of Herndon] would have documentation in his own hand of his true nature.

What Herndon DID acknowledge in his writings on Lincoln [along with Lincoln’s attraction and interaction with women] were the latter’s feelings for Joshua Speed with whom he shared a bed for four years, if not unequivocally characterizing them as in any way erotic: Lincoln “loved this man more than anyone dead or living.” [Herndon wasn’t hired to work in Speed’s store until at least eight months after the owner and Lincoln began bed-sharing, and Herndon and fellow store clerk Charles R. Hurst slept in the same room with Speed and Lincoln.]

While it IS strange that apparently only in recent casual conversation a gay rights activist like Rev. Love would drop this revelation rather than having publicly proclaimed it several years ago when the speculation about Lincoln began, or at least contacted the many historians who have written extensively about his sexuality such as Jonathan Katz, I’m not questioning Rev. Love’s BELIEF in such a story any more than the sincerity of those countless people who appear on “Antique Road Show” with a piece of jewelry that “originally belonged to Marie Antoinette” or Empress Alexandra of Russia.

  15. Much ado about nothing. What difference does it make if Lincoln was Gay or not? If his Wife was only half as bad as portrade, he surely had good reason to search for companionship from someone else.
