Evangelical College Chancellor Says Gays 'Don't Exist' on His Campus Because Everyone Signs an Honor Code

Dr. Michael Farris, the Chancellor and Founder of Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, Virginia, claims there are no gay students on his campus:

FarrisIt’s simple, really. Homosexuals can’t exist at Patrick Henry College because the students sign an honor code, Farris claimed. “[Homosexuals] could not sign our honor code,” Farris said, adding that he considers the actions of gay men and women “sinful.”

“Part of the honor code is to be sexually pure,” he added.

So you can imagine the chancellor’s consternation when he learned of Queer at Patrick Henry College, a six-month-old, provocatively-titled blog operated by three pseudonymous writers – all of whom graduated from or have taken classes at the school.

Patrick Henry has threatened to sue the blog.

"Kate Kane", one of the bloggers behind QueerPHC, responds to Farris' statements about the existence of gay students:

There’s a stark difference in the definition of our terms. In the eyes of those like Farris, homosexuality is just a sexual action or sexual lifestyle. For us, it’s an orientation, a marker of personal identity. Is it possible that there are no students having gay sex while enrolled at PHC? Entirely possible. But that doesn’t erase the existence of LGBTQ students at the school.

In a student body where there are so many virgins, why is it difficult to believe in the existence of a gay virgin?

It’s difficult if you believe homosexuality is completely synonymous with having gay sex.

In addition, Farris seems to think that any LGBTQ student who signed the honor code would be lying. But if a student’s sexuality has been repressed for years, they may not even realize they are anything other than straight or cisgender until after they enroll at the school. Personally, I did not begin to come to terms with my orientation until I was nearly ready to graduate. A student may also realize they are LGBTQ, but attempt to suppress it because they believe that being queer is wrong. Enrollment at a school like PHC could be part of a larger attempt to continue to live as straight or cisgender. Finally, since many parents hold the purse strings, some LGBTQ students might not have much of a choice as to where they attend school.

But regardless of why we enrolled at the school, we have all studied at PHC. It’s time to acknowledge our existence.

  1. All those sweet virgins are reserved for the benefit of the Chancellor himself. Oh, it's good to be king.

  2. This tiny college, PHC, was featured in the movie, "What's wrong with Kansas?" which is on Netflix. An evangelical teen from Wichita decides to go to PHC.

Also, someone at PHC obviously had an in with the Bush Whitehouse as PHC (200 students)had as many interns at the Whitehouse as Harvard (5 each) during the Bush Administration [separation of church and state?]

I think the answer to "What's wrong with Kansas?" is the same as to "What's wrong with PHC".

    Some scary sh*t!

Good luck to and my heart goes out to any teen, especially LGBT teens, whose path goes through PHC.

P.S. There are also no homosexuals in IRAN. lol

  4. @Fahd: I think you're trying to recommend "What's the Matter with Kansas," based on Thomas Frank's book of the same name.

  5. I can't stop laughing.

Yet more seriously it seems that enough information is in now to be able to posit that basically Right Wing Religion is arrayed against Young People (plus a whole lot of older ones). This means the Religionists are running against the majority both now and especially in the near future. Their only future is to change, disappear from view or be trampled.

Surely glee of the gloating kind must be a sin because it feels so good to witness this true evolution of human consciousness while rocking on my feet grinning at the sky.

  6. LOL what a joke, this clown knows there are LGBT people there he just thinks he can use his propaganda to hide the truth, gay people are having sex everywhere they just don't "come out" and let it be known. Get over it anti-gay Christians, God made gays and straights to love one another.

  9. Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, Virginia should lose its accreditation as a learning institute and be shut down for bigotry and hate. Anyone attending or graduating should find their degrees are worthless because their college is not a valid institution of knowledge. Any/all Federal and State funding should cease immediately for the Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, Virginia.

  11. This would be comical if it weren't for all the students (and no doubt some staff and faculty members) suffering under the know-nothing ignorance and stupidity of Biblical literalists like this fool.

  15. Ordinarily, I would support a group like this. But by calling themselves queer and tossing around ridiculous made-up words like cisgender, they are a self-parody. These clowns are no help to gay PHC students.

  16. Mr Farris and Mr Imanutjob of Iran think alike even though one uses the primitive rantings of mohammed and the other the primitive myths of the ancient Israelites.

  17. Jake, all words are "made-up" at some point to identify and define observations and differences. Just because you have issues with queer and cisgender does not make them "ridiculous" nor is it self-parody. The whole arena of trans studies, not to mention studies in sexuality at large often needs to create and re-define language because the history of language has been largely defined by the heterosexual community until recently. Your statement sounds an awful lot like the folks who say the word gay used to mean happy and now has been "ruined." And the reclamation of words like queer has been going on for quite some time now.
