Obama Chokes Up Addressing Connecticut School Shooting: VIDEO

School_obama

Obama addressed today's tragic school shooting in Connecticut, wiping away tears as he spoke to reporters:

"The majority of those who died today were children — beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old...They had their entire lives ahead of them — birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own....We've endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years, and each time I learn the news, I react not as a president, but as anybody else would, as a parent. And that was especially true today. I know there's not a parent in America who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that I do...These neighbors are our neighbors, and these children are our children, and we're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this — regardless of the politics."

  1. Can we please talk about gun control now?

  2. Well....I remember Obama during his inauguration telling his daughters "..I love you more than I can say.." and I could tell he really did.

  3. What a hypocrite. His drones killed at least this many innocent children this week alone, and he's getting choked up?

  4. ^^^ No. Obama promises meaningful action. There's nothing different about the circumstances surrounding this shooting, other than that the victims were children.

A crazy man got a gun and killed people. We could have talked gun control and mental health after Aurora, or Tuscon, or any of the number of tragedies recently.

  5. Gee, it only took 9 minutes. I wondered how long it would take for someone to hear the dog-whistle and start the rant for gun control.
Why don't we try something more effective, since it's a proven fact that "gun control" laws don't work? How about we work on creating a society that doesn't see violence as the answer to every butt-itch. How about we stop the government from spending every damned dime they pull in on corporate welfare and weapons, and force them to spend it on education, real job creation, universal health care, and ensuring that our planet doesn't explode. Perhaps if this shooter had a decent job, a real opportunity for advanced education, and could have gotten the help he needed when he needed it he wouldn't have melted down and taken these lives with him.
Ah, but no - we can't do that. That would mean people would have to take some responsibility for themselves and for the welfare of others. That's just too damned hard! Better instead to start screaming for the magic "EASY" button of "gun control." Keep your delusions. Those of us who've been paying attention to the last 40 years know better.

  7. Enough theatre. Do something.

  8. Ban guns you stupid stupid country.

  9. It was a good speech.
@Randy, theatre? I don't think so. Do you think he is unable to feel sad and is it forbidden to show your emotions?

  10. @mommie dammit

Real gun control works. Ask the countries that have it. Even China, where a man attacked 22 children with a knife today- none of them died.

  11. I appreciate his emotion about this, and I know it's especially hard for parents, but I wish he'd left the "as a parent" qualifier out. Even we people without kids are feeling pain over this. It's like the marginalization I feel when politicians say "working families" to the exclusion of working single people.

  12. The right to bear arms is an out dated ruling based on people using muskets to shot once every minute, not rapid fire guns with armour piercing bullets..Of course the NRA will hold a rally based on this outdated information...

  13. I don't like a president who cries. The image suggests a mirror of the nation's tragedy, not strong reassuring leadership.

  14. This is the price we pay for our gun loving culture.

  15. You can't win with some people. If Obama hadn't seemed moved, conservatives would say he's an unemotional robot.

  16. Gary, perhaps you should limit your Daddy-fetish cravings to your bedroom, and allow our political figures to be real human beings.

  17. @Gary
He leads the way in what it means to be a real human being.

  18. Mommie Dammit,

Stating that something is a proven fact does not make it so. Do you pay attention to countries other than the US? Because in many of those countries, gun control laws are working just fine. In Australia, they had a crazed gunman go on a rampage several years ago in Tasmania, killing more than a dozen people. The government's action was swift. They imposed strict gun control laws, and they have not had any shooting rampages since then. I know one example does not prove anything, but it certainly proves more than your blind assertions.

  23. This is what a President looks like.

  24. I'm in it for the response, which I always get. There is no "daddy fetish" That implies too many hours with the shrink Rick. There is nothing real about a political figure. Easy to be naive. With the county in such a fiscal mess, it's not too reassuring to watch a choked up President. And children. His are virtually invisible.

  25. Jeff : Your point IS understood. But...there IS a difference here, between a President's military policy and his personal emotions and the whole complicated situation.....
