Ricky Martin: HIV/AIDS Not A Gay Disease

6a00d8341c730253ef017ee49a2ad1970d-800wiRicky Martin took a break from his busy Broadway schedule to chat with the Huffington Post about his work fighting HIV/AIDS and how people's minds still need to be expanded when it comes to the disease's demographics.

"It's really sad when people say, 'Yeah, that's an issue for gays,' because it's not only the gay community that's struggling with AIDS -- it's [heterosexual] men, women and children, too," he said.

"For many years I did it quietly, because I had this conception people might think I was doing it for recognition, until I talked to real activists who told me, 'Dude, you need to talk about this, because people listen.'"

And if they're not listening, they're definitely looking at Martin when he drops trou for the non-profit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (see right).

Martin and Wong also discussed President Obama's reelection, which Martin describes as "nothing but light."

"If we went the other way, it was going to be like going back in time. As a Latino Puerto Rican U.S. citizen that can vote for the president, it was very beautiful to see minorities getting together for democracy, for freedom, for civil rights," said the singer and Evita star.

  1. I cringe when gay men say "dude". It sounds like they're trying so hard to sound they're straight. It sounds even worse coming from a man in his 40's - gay or straight.

  2. No problem with what Mr. Martin said up to his equating himself [not as a homosexual, but as a 'Latino Puerto Rican American] a 'minority'. Ricky is WHITE. So he IS NOT a racial minority in the North America. As for ethnic, aside from being 'American' there are no dominate white 'ethnicities', although the majority of whites probably have German, Irish, English, Scottish in their background, or a combination. The U.S. white population is very diverse ethnically speaking, most Americans are mutts. Why would a 'Latino Puerto Rican' being any more a 'minority' [the PC connotation in the word 'minority' is they're oppressed] than a Greek-American, or a Polish-American? Spanish language? Spanish speaking people in the U.S. are far from being oppressed. The U.S. unlike many similar nations has no official language [English is of course the defacto language] and no laws preventing it's usage in everyday life [Canada by comparison has official languages, English and French, and Quebec has laws that actively discriminate against non-French speakers, including what kind of signage they can place on their stores, etc.,]

So what is all this bullsh*t, especially regarding white 'Latinos' and 'Hispanics'?

    Note to non-Americans:

We have something called 'Affirmative Action Laws at our federal [central government] level that give preferential treatment by law to 'minorities' in employment, education, etc., including giving extra points on things like civil service tests and even tax credits to employers for each 'minority' employee they hire. This applies to ALL people from the Spanish speaking Caribbean, central and south America, even those who are white European descent. In other words, a white person [specifically male since females are covered under affirmative action] of low socioeconomic background, no 'privilege', no 'connections', is discriminated against in employment, education, etc., in favor of the groups I described as 'minority' above, and including white 'Latinos', blacks, Asians, females, of a higher and more privileged socioeconomic background. Affirmative action is based solely on skin color, ethnicity, and gender not socioeconomics in the U.S.

Mr. Martin is a very privileged, well off man who has no business passing himself off as 'oppressed' aside maybe by virtue of his sexual orientation, certainly not because he's white or Puerto Rican 'Latino'.

  3. Maybe if boomer gays hadnt politicized it it wouldnt have been considered a "gay" disease. I remember for years my straight friends being concern trolls all the time and not taking their own risks seriously.

  4. @ratbastard: Did you get that out of your system? Clearly you were just using this post as an opportunity to express something building up inside you. I have no idea what article you were reading, but from the gist of your rant, one would've thought Ricky Martin was organizing a 'down with Whitey' campaign.
Sort our your issues; if this fluff piece of an article has you this worked up then you need to find help.

BTW, way to be reductive on the issue Affirmative Action (which totally came out of left field). Don't worry, fortunately for you, white men still overwhelmingly dominate women and minorities in top spots for business and tech.

  7. @homogenius "Maybe if boomer gays hadnt politicized it it wouldnt have been considered a "gay" disease.

If gays hadn't politicized it, they would be dead, as would most everyone else with HIV today.

Gays and Haitians were the first to get HIV in North America. That's an epidemiological fact, not a political one. But it made the disease politically invisible, until gay men and lesbians fought against "Silence Equals Death" and against a drug approval process that was designed to maximise profit and reduce corporate liability without regard to the fact that gays and Haitians were dying for lack of medication.

Many of the drugs that are now freely distributed in Africa were made possible due to gay and lesbian activism. Not that that stops Africans today from oppressing their gay and lesbian countrymen, denying them the very drugs and treatments that Western gays and lesbians made possible, and excluding gays and lesbians from the community health programs in Africa that they pioneered in America.

  8. Ricky Martin is a moron. He has no credibility left.

This is the idiot who campaigned for George W Bush and performed at his inauguration. Ricky was perfectly fine selling out the gays when he was making millions bit now he has no career he comes out and comes to the gay community for us to keep buying his music to keep him rich.

He's typical of the current do-anything-to-stay-famous "celebrities" who would sell their own soul for just five more minutes of attention.

He is a TERRIBLE representative for our community. We need to boycott him and ignore his embarrassing self serving behavior.

  12. @Hugh,

WTF don't 'progressives' DEMAND legal discrimination against white males [i.e. Affirmative Action] at top management levels? You do it for white dudes at the middle and bottom rung of the ladder. Yes, ANYONE [regardless of their skin tone or what sexual organs they have between their legs] who is upper management has influence, power, connections, and privilege. They in turn can pass these things on to their children through their connections and nepotism. WHY is a white dude who doesn't fall into this privileged upper class status legally discriminated against? Why pick on those at the bottom? Because it'd easy and they can't really fight it like upper class people can? It's like forced busing; white upper class towns and suburbs weren't forced by judges to 'desegregate', weren't forced to have a certain percentage of this group and that group, that was reserved exclusively for working class and poor urban areas that happened to have a predominate white population.

This came out of left field? Well said, yes it did come out of 'left' field. We're talking about POLITICAL CORRECTNESS and how it seems to dominate everything in our society.

  13. ICEBLOO: Exactly. I have no respect for celebrities who spent their entire careers acting against LGBT interests, only to later come out after their luster has faded.

@Icebloo: Martin is spending nearly a year as Che in the Broadway revival of Evita

@Jaun [sic?]: Don't live in the 1980s like the Religious Right. Read some recent scientific information on the origins of HIV. The first documented case of HIV in the US dates back to the first half of the 20c.

  16. I shouldn't reply,but:

No 'Lance', I just think it's wrong to scapegoat, discriminate and stereotype ANYONE...including 'White Devils', i.e. white males. I also don't like HYPOCRISY, Lance, and many 'Progressives' are VERY hypocritical, just as bad as the 'Conservatives' they whine about.

When you go to such great lengths to label individual human beings in the way political parties, the marketing industry, and others do, you are asking for a lot of trouble and tension. When 'Progressives' in the U.S. demand people fill out forms when applying for a job, school, housing, census, jury duty, etc., that's a list a half page long of 'ethnicities', 'races', sexual orientations, gender, religion, etc., [in most of Europe it's ILLEGAL to ask these questions] don't be surprised by the tensions even hate it causes.

I'm not a big fan of group-think, Lance.

    Posted by: ratbastard | Dec 2, 2012 11:52:34 AM

  17. "I'm not a big fan of group-think, Lance."

Oh neither am I, Rat, neither am I. Group think is what keeps racial minorities in dangerous neighborhoods, it is what makes the police routinely brutalize them, it is what makes people distrust them at every level of society, it is what makes them "the others".

No white person is ever going to get it, however. They see affirmative action and immediately begin kicking and screaming that someone is being "racist" towards whites, simply because after centuries of institutionalized oppression and segregation, a few people are finally being given a chance. The benefits of affirmative action cannot even begin to compare with the advantages granted from being perceived as white in this country.

    Posted by: Lance | Dec 2, 2012 1:04:10 PM

  18. @Lance,

I'm white but was raised in minority majority neighborhoods in NYC and Boston. Honest to God's truth, and yes some white suburban people may be shocked to know there are white people who are born and raised in the 'inner-city' and aren't as socioeconomically privileged as they are. That said, maybe this is why I have a different take on the subject than you. BTW I never had any serious issues with 'minority' people giving me a hard time for being white, but I can tell you numerous stories about the obnoxious behaviors of some 'progressive' white people who HATE 'poor' whites, especially the male variety.

    Posted by: ratbastard | Dec 2, 2012 1:39:32 PM

  19. Ratbastard,

Our economic system is inherently favorable to white males at the expense of women and racial minorities. This is an indisputable fact, and it has been going on for decades. Affirmative Action might be flawed, but it is designed as a way to try to right a historical wrong. It does not oppress white males. White males are still the dominant economic and political force in this country by a mile.

Your little pedantic rant about race and ethnicity is all well and good. But most people in America do not consider Ricky Martin "white." Since race and ethnicity are largely social constructs that have no genetic or scientific basis, how one is perceived by others is what matters.

Obama might be bi-racial, but in America he is perceived as black. According to the the currently accepted system of racial and ethnic classification, Ricky Martin would be considered a white Latino. But he is still perceived as a non-white, racial minority by most in this country.

Ricky Martin never suggested he was oppressed. What he said was, "As a Latino Puerto Rican U.S. citizen that can vote for the president, it was very beautiful to see minorities getting together for democracy, for freedom, for civil rights."

You have to really distort what he said to interpret that as Martin saying he was oppressed. Everything Martin said was true. Latinos are ethnic minorities in the US. Puerto Ricans are a minority group. As are homosexuals. Martin definitely qualifies as a minority.

  20. "Use a condom to prevent H.I.V. / A.I.D.S."

WHO is responsible for introducing this idea to our most at risk youth ?

    HIV/AIDS Curriculum Overview 2005-2011
Grades 7-12: Adolescents learn to avoid alcohol and other drugs, which may impair their judgment and put them at increased risk for HIV/AIDS infection. They are strongly encouraged to abstain from sexual intercourse. Some lessons also address methods of prevention, including the correct and consistent use of latex condoms, which can greatly reduce the risk of HIV/STD infection among people who are sexually active. Lessons also address HIV testing and explore how HIV/AIDS has affected our society.

  21. A couple of people on here should educate themselve better before to attempt to speak of something that they are just " IGNORANT", first " I AM LATINO MYSELF", and Latin America has a lot of white people, to name a few famous : Shakira, Sofia Vergara, Gloria Estefan, Oscar de la Renta, Antonio Banderas and of course Ricky. Use your common sense "LATINO" is not a race" is simply how the U.S put us in a box for the census because we come from the continent of Latin America, there are a lot of WHITE LATINOS, MULATOS LATINOS,AND BLACK LATINOS. WE ARE A MIX OF RACES.

Second : RICKY MARTIN IS "ONE OF THE BIGGEST LATIN ARTIST IN HISTORY" HE STILL HUGE IN LATIN AMERICA AND PART OF THE WORLD, RICKY IS MILLIONAIRE" so for the ignorant that says that he is not relevant,he always will be relevant, THE MAN IS A LEGEND IN THE LATINO COMMUNITY "AND WILL ALWAYS BE". His coming out was huge globally and has changed possitive millions of people's mind about the gay community, we all should be happy and grateful that he came out, he is a class act, talented, handsome, very successful, known in the entire planet, decent kind man with kids and in a loving relationship. Sad to see how gay people attack among each other, instead of unite.

  25. Totally agree with what Shawn says below is very true:

Ricky Martin never suggested he was oppressed. What he said was, "As a Latino Puerto Rican U.S. citizen that can vote for the president, it was very beautiful to see minorities getting together for democracy, for freedom, for civil rights."

You have to really distort what he said to interpret that as Martin saying he was oppressed. Everything Martin said was true. Latinos are ethnic minorities in the US. Puerto Ricans are a minority group. As are homosexuals. Martin definitely qualifies as a minority.

    -------------------------------------------

Some of the loosers negative queens that can't contribute to the society with anything possitive, all that they can do is criticizes the few celebrities like Ricky that has his best intentions, and is using his star power for help the LGBT causes.

    LOVE RICKY MARTIN.
