São Paulo State Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

GaybrazilflagBig news out of Brazil, where São Paulo State just gave the green light to same-sex marriages.

From Brazilian Law Blog, via JMG:

...São Paulo State (where São Paulo city is located) has updated its registration rules in order to allow the automatic registration of same sex marriages, without the need of a previous court order.

This change has followed, with some delay, a decision from the Brazilian Supreme Court regarding same sex marriage.

Therefore, foreigners who wish to marry same sex partners in Brazil will now be allowed a marriage visa, which is much easier to obtain than the civil union visa for same sex unions, which already existed.

So, who's down for a destination wedding?

  1. Ummm... you might want to rethink that destination wedding.

From what I have read over the past few years, Brazil has one of the highest rates of violence against gays in the world. Not this "hate crime" BS we read about here where someone's car gets spraypainted but out right killing

  2. Get married in Brazil & you will probably cheat on your spouse before leaving the country.

  3. Thankfully, there are tremendous LGBT rights organizations in Brazil which track anti-gay violence. The Grupo Gay de Bahia was the first LGBT-rights org founded in the country, and today it tracks statistis on anti-gay violence. As the Daily Beast reported in April, nationwide, attacks are on the rise.

However, like much of the violence in Brazil in general, a lot of those crimes are happening in the smaller cities of the northeast, more than a full day's drive from Sao Paulo. Sadly, gay Paulistas have certainly suffered an unfair share of attacks, but last week's highly publicized murder of Lawrence Corrêa Biancão in Minas Gerais is more typical of what's happening regionally.

Visibility is key, and Brazil should be congratulated for moving forward on marriage equality!

  5. The violence against gays in Brazil is a serious problem, however the visibility of such violence has a lot to do with how well the LGBT organizations have been tracking and the media attention that these crimes get there - which are good signs.

Now, saying that Brazil has one of the highest rates of anti-gay violence is an overstatement, to say the least. It is gay paradise compared to the sheer majority of nations in the World (let's count... Africa, Middle East, Asia...).

And while Sao Paulo, as a megalopolis, has its share of hatred and violence, most of these cases occur in more remote areas of the country.
