Azealia Banks Holds 'Faggot' Debate on Twitter

Banks

Singer Azealia Banks, who made headlines last month after a feud with Perez Hilton in which she used the word "faggot" repeatedly, has struck up the feud once again, this morning canvassing her 300,000 followers as to their definition of the word.

A_banksSaid Banks: "Here we go again. Everyone pretending to be so shocked and moved by the word faggot... It's like society is so bored with itself it needs to hold on to these outdated rules of what you can say and cannot say... Why has society accepted "ni**er" As a colloquialism ... But will not accept "faggot"? Everyones always acting like its f**king 1905 in this bitch. What is your definition of the word faggot? Faggot means coward, liar, backstabber...... Energy stealer, blood sucker. Perez tries to get every gay person all riled up when the only faggot I see ........ is him. It's really time for a cultural shift. All these leftover old world social themes we're all still trying to hold on to are BOOORRIIING"

Banks is receiving quite a few responses to her question. The conversation is ongoing...

Last month, singer Jake Shears and GLAAD responded to Banks.

Said GLAAD: "[That] is an ugly, archaic word that was used to stigmatize a population of people who suffer high rates of violence both here in the U.S. and abroad," said Matt Kane, the group's Associate Director of Entertainment Media. "As far as we’ve come in this society, seeing it used by an artist many young people may look up to is painful, but even more so for those young fans, many of whom GLAAD has heard from."

Said Shears: "It all about context. And right now, I'm sorry, but context is not on your side."

  1. "Faggot means coward, liar, backstabber...... Energy stealer, blood sucker"

    Really? Since when?

She really needs to know when to shut up

  2. I LOVE her, but she keeps digging herself deeper... I refer to myself as a F*g occasionally, but it's usually for comedic emphasis. When you start hurling it to hurt people it becomes troublesome. Which leads me to believe that I should probably drop it from my vocabulary completely, regardless of intention. Otherwise I can't really get mad when non-gays use it...

  3. Is she a homophobe? No. Is she childish, petulant, ill-informed and ignorant? Most certainly.

  4. I don't think the "n" word should be accepted or used but only Black people can stop the use by refusing to use it. Using the word fag is also a word that we should try to stop using, starting with the gay community. It is hard to own a word or take away the stigma from it when it is still used to degrade people. Kids still get beat up and are still vulnerable to the word faggot...that makes it hard for me to understand the people who say we should "own" that word and use it.

  5. It's just astonishing how stupid some people are. Not just her: she's definitely symptomatic of some young people today.

I'm relatively sure she'd complain if we called her a Negro -- but assured her that the word no longer has anything to do with race; it just means really, really stupid.

  6. "Why has society accepted '[the N-word}' as a colloquialism but will not accept but will not accept 'faggot'?"

Bigoted ignorant people use these words. The rest of society does not.

My guess this is a woman who cannot get the level of attention she wants based on her talent or accomplishments so she courts notoriety.

  7. I don't understand why the "n-word" and the "f-word" were censored in the restating of the tweets but the other "f-word" wasn't. One is not more acceptable than the other, in my opinion.

  8. You hear f*ggot thrown around a lot in the Brooklyn and downtown gay scene in New York. P*ssy f*ggot, sh*tty f*ggot, etc. in party flyers and songs. Her use of it towards Perez Hilton who is the biggest sh*tty f*ggot doesn't faze me.

  9. "Why has society accepted the word n**ger..."

    I stopped reading there.

I always cringe whenever I hear the "I'm a member of that minority so I can use it's designated slur" talking points.

I realize there's this hellbent determination to "take back" said terms in the future to "get back" in some way at oppression or whatever sociological argument is being tossed around in its defense right now...

...but for me personally - context never dies.

Not N***** for lynching. Not f***** for Shephard's murder and beyond.

    Never.

  10. The only “society that accept n***** as a colloquialism” is the one populated with brutal, uneducated black folks like her--boorish girl.

  11. Ms. Banks needs to grow up a little. Since when has the N Word been deemed acceptable?

    Posted by: Jack M | Feb 15, 2013 11:24:08 AM

  12. Yeeaaahhh... I think comparing the word f*g to n*igg*r isn't an apples to apples comparrison. While both are used as a derogatory term to hurt specific minority groups, the "n" word is inextricably linked to 300+ years of slavery, abuse and murder perpetuated by whites. I'm not trying to say one group has more of a right to offense than another, I just feel there are more cogent arguments that can be used. Further, if she wasn't black I doubt that line of reasoning would be employed...

  13. The problem with Azealia is, she thinks she's a gay/bi man and she's not. She's not one of us, so she is not entitled to dictate the terms of words that are connected to us. On top of that, she completely lacks social awareness. Her world is the underground urban gay scene. She doesn't have any real connection to, you know, every day society.

She's taking advantage of gay men and their straight girlfriends, which is her only fanbase. She's more popular on twitter than she is in real life. She's known more for beefing with people than she is for her music. She's irrelevant, and she's exactly what she so desperately tries hard not to be----a cliche.

As for the f-bomb, and the n-word. Here's how I see it. I don't really care if the words are used in jest or used ironically by someone whose intentions I know are not to offend. I don't like it, and I make it clear to everyone whose ever used the word around me that you better think about what you're about to say before using these words.

But ultimately, both the f-bomb and n-word are used to denigrate and degrade individuals for who they are, on a daily basis. Anyone use twitter? The racism on twitter is absolutely insane. LGBTQ teens hear homophobic abuse in schools daily and are torn down with these gay slurs used to mock and degrade them. To simply willy-nilly use these words are completely offensive and ignorant. Words have power, and Azealia Banks sure isn't the woman to change history nor change current societal attitudes.

  14. This womans a moron.

  15. as are the people responding trying to rationalize and justify the use of the word.

  16. This woman is operating in a social context where "society has accepted 'n-----' as a colloquialism".

She is very not living in the same social world as you and me - of course her standards of judgment are different.

  17. If it's so simple to co-opt a new definition for a word with strong historical connotation, perhaps Ms. Banks could make the same argument for the definition of marriage? At least some good might come of making that argument.

  18. Oh man, thank god you guys are all against her and stubborn against any possible change or progress. Gay conservatives are so strange.

Go for it Azealia! Right now you are a pretty awesome person, don't build a Kanye style ego due to your genius!

Also, seriously guys? I assume the average age of the people commenting here is like 30's. How did you get here without falling in love with any counter culture rebels? Can you not remember idealized banter and radical causes?

  20. "Where are Littlekiwi and DerrickfromPhilly to defend her?"

Why, Sean, I wasn't even interested in this discussion until I saw you had posted.

Well, you can defend her, Sean. I don't feel like defending any n-words or f-words today. I hate everybody today.

Say, Sean, what's the proper slur for Koreans? Maybe I'll defend you.

  21. Was it the caterpillar or the Cheshire Cat that said, "A word means what I want it to mean. Nothing more. Nothing less"? This girls has fallen down a rabbit hole.

  23. Azealia Banks is a loud ignorant clown who in two years time will be forgotten. She'll be parked somewhere in the same zip code as the Arc of the Covenant in Google's archive of vanished internet content.

Maybe her publicist suggested scandal and outrage would help boost sales? If so, she's already washed up.

  24. Amazing! What does the word n@$%er mean Ms Bans? It seems to me, that you know EVERYTHING. I can get low with you too,
