  1. I can understand that. Who would want to see one self in television or movie? From actor's point it might be better not to see before the work is done.

  2. Need to add, MS is a jewel in the series. I watch it because of her.

  3. That makes two of us.

  4. I know it sounds strange, but especially with a show that involves long hours in costuming, makeup, location shooting or anything like that, it makes sense for her to do or watch something entirely different in her spare time.

I wouldn't go home after a long day and watch the security footage from work. I'd want to do something entirely different.

  5. She steals every scene in every movie, play or TV show she is in.

  6. Who would want to see oneself playing an old person, with makeup and lighting showing every flaw on purpose, to suit the character?

  7. This is news? Lots of actors either refuse to watch themselves on screen or at least mildly avoid it. Timothy Olyphant brought this up on the latest Nerdist podcast, only he did a funny bit about not being able to get enough of seeing himself on screen.

  8. Maggie Smith has the best one liners in Downton Abbey. Only actors in Ryan Murphy shows watch themselves. They can't get enough of themselves.

  9. Oh I don't think Maggie Smith is NEARLY as good in Downton Abbey as Joan Collins was in Dynasty, or Barbara Bel Geddes in Dallas or Jane Wyman in Falcon Crest.

She's probably better than Linda Evans in Dynasty, and Joan Van Ark in Knot's Landing.

  10. Maggie Smith is the only reason to watch anything with her in it. She can say more with her eyes in 2 seconds than a vast majority of actors can in an hour. Everyone pales beside her.

  11. A long time ago, I worked with Maggie. She's witty and humble and absolutely devoted to her work. A truly great artist.

  12. I bumped into Diahann Carroll once in an airport. She was truly down to earth and devoted to making her next flight. Inarugably a great artist!

  13. Only "Glee" and "New Normal" actors watch themselves. They can't get enough of themselves.

  14. Jabon,

Barbara Bel Geddes in "Dallas"? Good lord. don't you mean Linda Gray? Miss Ellie didn't have any zingers

  15. Oh puh-lease! NONE of these heiffers can hold a candle to Barbara Stanwyck in Big Valley!

  16. Or Agnes Moorehead in "Bewitched"

  22. Every time I think of Maggie Smith, I think of "A Room With A View", which she practically walked off with. Poor Charlotte...

  23. Jabon Jabon, it's just not fair to bring up Joan Collins in this thread. That poor lady there is trying to occupy herself with a very sweet community theater project and you mention the Grande Dame herself? How would you like it if I compared something you scribbled on a napkin to timeless works of literature, like Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood? I think this woman has suffered enough humiliation under your heartless tongue, Jabon Jabon. Let her have her community theatre. Does Joan Collins have to get *every* role? Won't she ever be satisfied?

  24. Honestly, a lot of thespians don't watch their recorded performances. First off, it comes across as exceptionally vain. Plus, at the whim of so much post-production, their acting can resemble something much different than they remember. And then they become hyper-critical about something that they can't change or that someone else changed on them. Finally, most actors don't have time to sit around and watch TV/films; they work very long hours.
