Bully Writes 'Fag' on 7th Grader's Neck at Illinois School: VIDEO

Childs
(the slur - one letter has been blurred out)

Caylend Childs, a seventh grader at Mason Clark Middle School in East St. Louis, Illinois, spent all day with the word "fag" written on his neck because a bully had written it there, his mother told KTVI News.

Said Ruth Childs: "He was resting his head on his desk and a boy wrote it on his neck. I saw it when he got home and called the school after taking a picture of it. He did not know it was there, but all the kids were laughing at him. It was written in permanent marker."

School officials confirmed the incident did happen as well as another one for which students were discipline.

Said Childs: "They kicked in the stall door and kicked Caylend in the back. Urine got all over him."

Childs says that her son no longer wants to go to school. Is anyone surprised?

  1. This is horrible, but there is no such place as East St. Louis, Missouri. There is a St. Louis, Missouri and there is an East St. Louis, Illinois. Looks like a geographical error in the headline & article.

  2. Also, how is that his neck?

  3. St. Louis has north, south, east, and west regions, like every other city and town on Earth.

It's the back of his neck. Look again.

  4. And "disciplined" should mean expulsion not some measley 3 day suspension.
Serious and exemplary action is required to eradicate bullying.
Kids must learn that it is totally unacceptable.

Ptherwise they end up like that bully Romney who held a kid down and cut his long hair. Romney ended up seeing nearly half the electorate as irrelevant to his ambitions.......perhaps if he had been expelled from his school he would not have risen to become a threat to democracy.

  5. this stuff will continue until the parents are given fines or the children are expelled and are forced to be home schooled.

  7. JackFknTwist--Geesh, you expel a kid for this you're going to end up expelling about a quarter of the kids in school, and you're going to wind up with a group of kids who hate gay people viciously for the rest of their miserable lives. You're not going to really fix anything at all.

A 12-13 year old is still very much an extension of the parents and group think, so maybe add some social service intervention and community service to the suspension. Make sure the administrators are aware that they can be sued if crap like this happens on school grounds. And if a pattern endures, then consider expulsion. Honestly, given what I dealt with in school, and what many of my friends endured, I'm surprised this is even newsworthy. I didn't want to go to school either most days, but with help from my parents and friends I survived it and figured out what my options were for fighting back against it.

  8. WTH - if the school knew - why didn't they alert the guy and give him something to cover his neck with if he wouldn't wash off.

The teacher and the school are just as guilty of bullying as the bully.

These "institutions of learning" are teaching quite a bit - and none of it increases intelligence.

  9. Schools can't expel students anymore because a court long ago ruled that the public schools have to "provide an education to all students in the least restrictive environment." So when you send well behaved and prepared little Johnny off to first grade, (already able to read, write, and do math) he will be thrown in with little Undiagnosed, Unmedicated/overmedicated, Unparented, and Uncontrollable in addition to Foulmouth, Nastyboy, and Formica.

Moreover, if a teacher refers too many students, or the wrong mix of students for discipline, he is chastised by the principal. Likewise, a Principal can be hauled in front of the state board of education if the demographics of discipline don't match some liberal jackhole's idea of how things ought to be.

Homeschool your family's children if you can.

  10. I hope the boy's teacher has been removed from duty and sent to one of these rubber rooms where bad teachers who can't be fired due to union rules go.

  12. @ THOMAS :

    No, I don't agree.
You expell the kids for this and bullying stops within 12 months.
Once they know that bullying is so serious as to be felonious, and that the consequence is expulsion, you think they are going to take a chance ?
    I don't think so.

  13. It really is difficult to resist the 'kids will be kids' thinking... after all, when I was in school, occasional fistfights were the norm.

As people have noted, it's tricky for the teachers up against their own administration, it's tricky for the parents protecting their kid but not wanting to make him a further target. It should be tricky for the bully, but I suspect it's not & these are the best days of his life.

Truly, I think I would want a conference w/ the teachers, admin, parents of the bully together, where I explained that even the whiff of something like this again would equal legal fees in the future, all the way around.

  15. East St. Louis Cops Outgunned as Cuts Let Killers Thrive

Dodging open manholes where thieves had swiped cast-iron covers, Stephen Wigginton drives the crumbling streets of his hometown, East St. Louis, Illinois, pointing out new landmarks in America’s most violent city.
There’s the shopping mall where a police officer was shot in the face, a youth center that saw a triple homicide in September, and scattered about the city of 27,000 are brightly lit gas stations that serve as magnets for carjackers, hit-and- run robbers and killers.

  16. School guidelines include 'possible' suspensions? Nobody, at least no American, should be surprised by this since schools, especially public schools in urban areas, have been used and abused by politicians, teacher's unions and others for many decades. Anyone, regardless of their 'race', doesn't send their kids to inner city schools in America, if they can afford a private, Catholic, or today small publicly funded charter school. Some major cities also have excellent public exam schools, but they're the exception. And it's not because of a lack of funding, but of course those who financially benefit from the status quo like the teacher's unions [VERY powerful across the U.S.], politicians who get to staff school facilities and management with political cronies and hacks, and private contractors who make nice $ from lucrative public contracts, talk endlessly of dumping more and more $ into this bottomless pit.

  17. "The racial makeup of the city was 1.23% White..."

Oh, thank you for the heads up, Ratbastard. I'll never go to East St Louis. Once you allow that particular demographic to go above 1.2% all hell breaks loose.

    Oh, my!

  19. No Derrick, the problem isn't the 'race', it's the culture where the majority of families are made up of single-unmarried women, may with children from multiple fathers, and of course 'collecting'. Families under these circumstances, often living in public housing, are also often a multigenrational, dysfunctional hot mess. And the boys/men very disproportionately get involved in violence and violent crime, becoming institutionalized. It's effed up, Derrick. And I do feel bad for kids who are raised in such an environment.

  21. Funny how Rat always turns these issues into racial ones.

This is assault. I've already contacted some people and they are preparing a response and going to look into what happened here. It's incredibly sad this still happens, and it happens regularly. The good stories we hear more of are nice, but let's not pretend it's the reality for most LGBTQ youth.

  24. @Francis,

Funny? All I tried to do was give a better picture on the ground in East St. Louis. East St. Louis has a NOTORIOUS reputation for just how bad it a place can get. It's arguably worse than Detroit, which is saying something. And demographics do matter in trying to understand. In the case of East St. Louis, it shows a place that's been out of control for a long time.

I don't think this poor kid being bullied ranks very high on their agenda. I'd STRONGLY suggest the family move out of East St. Louis if at all possible.

There are some here who pay undue attention to the racial aspects of the city's demographics, when the more interesting angle is the female to male ratio, dominate age groups, percentage of single/unmarried mother's with larger than average number of kids, and the very high rate of poverty.

  25. As for more evidence that being without a father messes up a kid, take a look at me. In the years since my father died from a broken anus after being gang banged by black men, I've only become even more and more worthless and pathetic.
