Illinois GOP Chair Pat Brady Survives New Attempt to Oust Him for His Support of Marriage Equality

Illinois Republican Chairman Pat Brady has been the target of his party's ire since January when he said:

Brady"Giving gay and lesbian couples the freedom to get married honors the best conservative principles. It strengthens families and reinforces a key Republican value - that the law should treat all citizens equally."

In March, Republican leaders had planned a meeting in which they were going to discuss firing Brady for his remarks but the meeting was canceled because of dissonance within the party.

The meeting finally happened on Saturday, and Brady came out alive, the AP reports:

About 50 Republican Party members attended Saturday’s meeting in Tinley Park of the party’s State Central Committee to ask that Brady step down or that the committee fire him.

After a tense, hourslong session, Brady remained as the party’s chairman. He said the committee did not take a vote on whether to fire him during a closed-door meeting Saturday.

“I think there are people in the party who don’t necessarily agree with me, but the point is .... we’re a party that welcomes all ideas,” Brady said. “You don’t have to be exactly a platform Republican to be welcome in the party, and that’s the direction we’re taking the party.”

This is the atmosphere Republicans have fostered with their anti-equality stance:

At one point, people gathered in a hallway outside the meeting began yelling and chanting, “Throw him out.”

  5. I appreciate this guy's willingness to go to bat for marriage equality in IL, but I take issue with Brady's comments about being a party that welcomes all ideas... if that were the case more the progressive members of the GOP would not have been chased out of the party by its more "conservative" less rational members.

  6. @MuscleModelBlog.com. Brady is going to bat for this specifically because there are "progressive" members. The term conservative doesn't necessarily mean socially conservative (those entangled in pro-life, anti-gay marriage). The lawyer representing the pro-gay marriage side to the Supreme Court is a conservative. The GOP is currently dominated by its most generous and dependable group -the social conservatives.

  7. This story is Pat Brady's spin. Don't be fooled, gay marriage had little to do with the opposition(I was there in opposition). Brady's divisiveness and failure of leadership are primarily why they were calling for his removal. Brady has shown disdain for the grassroots and rank-and-file of the party. He says "his party must be more welcoming of diversity and inclusive of people who disagree" when talking to reporters friendly to him, but his actions are the exact opposite...he fails to support good conservative minority candidates like Paul McKinley, Edgar Montalvo, Sherri Griffith, and many other minorities. In fact he and the party leadership worked against McKinley and some of the others by disparaging them in the media. McKinley, a black man from the streets of the 2nd district is better at reaching the people of the 2nd congressional district than any other candidate has or could. The leadership of the ILGOP is old white guys who hold disdain for the Rank-and-file grassroots Republicans in IL. They are sick and tired of the ILGOP leadership who is complicit with the corrupt IL machine. The leadership just doesn't realize that their time is up...they are living in the past.
