Navy Launches Unmanned Drone from Aircraft Carrier: VIDEO

Drone

The U.S. Navy is cheering a milestone in drone warfare, Reuters reports:

The bat-winged X-47B stealth drone roared off the USS George H.W. Bush near the coast of Virginia and flew a series of pre-programmed maneuvers around the ship before veering away toward a Naval air station in Maryland where it was scheduled to land.

"This is really a red-letter day. May 14 we all saw history happen" said Rear Admiral Ted Branch, the Atlantic naval air commander. "It's a marker ... between naval aviation as we've known it and the future of naval aviation with the launch of the X-47B."

Gizmodo adds:

"In a few decades, when autonomous drone planes battle each other in the skies, fire missiles at drone troops and battleships, humanity will look back at this day as the true beginning of total drone warfare...Sooner than we think, the Pentagon will be able to easily and conveniently deploy autonomous fighters, and bombers anywhere in the globe thanks to their aircraft carriers. And then, one day, Skynet will gain self-awareness. Fun times ahead!

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. "laughs at Skynet joke" then thinks about it, "Holy Sh*t". If the Government ever turns these on it's citizens, the "right to bare arms" won't mean a damn thing.

    LOL

did y'all ever see that early-90's Barry Levinson flop "TOYS"?

Hi, it's about this drone business. i'm serious.

also, um, ISHTAR appears to have been prophetic, too.

so there we have it. new-millenium politics were predicted by infamous flop films.

  4. And the civilians of Pakistan and the Middle East shivered in terror.

This is WMD that will be used to kill innocent people - make no mistake about that.

  5. Good for us. There's always a war somewhere that we seem to have to get involved in and we should certainly minimise every potential casuality, but why risk ourselves?

  6. A stealth drone and the wingnuts still b!tch about black helicopters.

  7. It's not a stealth drone. It just looks like it.

The X47 is also only a technology demonstrator. It won't be produced in series.

  8. @MaryM and we should care why? They don't like us and would not hesitate one moment to do the same to any American, Canadian, Israeli, or European and as such we should be prepared to do just as much or more to them. This is war and war is not pretty and requires hard choices be made

  12. IN PRAISE OF MARY-M above: I am happy that at Towleroad there is at least one civilized reaction to this Pentagon press release about America's latest, "glamorous" murder weapon. No engineer in our trillions-of-dollars military-industrial complex has yet designed a drone which can slaughter only The Evildoers. Drones don't "do" due process, with such trivialities like the rule of law, "innocent till proven guilty," and trials. It's still a crime, domestic and international, to launch (drone) attacks against Pakistanis, Afghans, and whomever else is the Enemy of the Week--and whoever orders the murders, whether he be President George W. (for "war criminal") Bush or President Oblather. @Lee above: Who exactly are "they" who are planning to murder "us"? Are "they" every Muslim and/or Arab and/or dark-skinned human being on Planet Earth? IT IS A SHAME that Towleroad has featured this Pentagon propaganda as yet another dandy, neat-o thing which we should all know about and which, presumably, we should think is protecting us from terrorism.

  13. Lee - so if the US is allowed to use these WMD against civilians in foreign countries, then surely you can't have any moral objection if foreign nationals use them against US civilians.

These WMD have killed more innocent Pakistani civilians than were killed in 9/11.

Then again I suppose those people are brown and muslim and don't matter.

  14. And by the way - the US is NOT at war. Illegally invading other countries does not count as war.

It is merely an illegal invasion and occupation.

  15. Andrew - any drone that is launched which kills an innocent civilian in Pakistan or Afghanistan is a terrorist attack.

Is the US Navy now in the business of terrorism?
