  1. Guess I won't be going to Indonesia anytime soon. Good Lord. What a backwards looking country. Thats sad.

  2. Isn't it ironic that Niall Ferguson seems bent on criticizing others for their (supposed) prejudices?

  3. Niall Ferguson made a lot of good points, but the gay thing is just conjecture, base and simple. You need proof if you are going to speculate such a bizarre history, like a love letter where he spells out some intent. But it doesn't exist and you are talking out your ass.

  4. Just a slight clarification, the flogging thing is being considered by Aceh, a semi-autonomous province that constitutes less than 3% of Indonesia. They've been rebelling against the central government for years, mainly over their desire to implement strict Islamic principles. In the end the government compromised and allowed them a great deal of autonomy, although if they do particularly stupid things the Indonesian government will step in.

  5. Re: Chris Kluwe, I would just like to point out that your advocacy wasn't a banal thing, good and bad, it eventually pulled you from football, so it is a perfectly acceptable thing for teams to conciser when buying you as a player. I'm sure some did it out of bigotry, but some probably saw this, that it would become a focus and end your career.

But hey, more power to you! You are charismatic, funny and well spoken, maybe try and team up with Ben Cohen!

  7. The report on the life of LGBT in Indonesia is despicable.
F**kin Djamal ... homosexuality “a social disease that should be eradicated”
And people wonder why we fight for every scrap of decent treatment.

Who can we contact at the State Dept to voice our concerns with this?
    Hartoyo needs our support.

  8. Wow. Some unknown terminal at SFO will be named after Harvey Milk. Big F'n deal?
We'll see what happens when they try to name the International Terminal after Dianne Feinstein or some other SF do- gooder? Will there still be questions of the 'extreme'cost to taxpayers,Letting the "voters' decide, etc?
Thanks for being a total sell-out Supervisor Campos and hope it helps your run for the State Assembly in 2014
    Homophobia at it's worst.

  9. Ferguson is making a fool of himself and of the gay godfather of his son Andrew Sullivan who came to his defense. Sullivan is going to have a hard time continuing his defense the more Ferguson digs in. Of course Sullivan also has a long history of making outrageous statements and then defending them to the last breath.

  10. I generally disapprove of naming things after people because it leads to these kinds of fights, and also because I find things named after persons whose name I don't recognize to be rather Hootervillish. For example , here in Tampa we have The Howard Frankland (not Franklin) Bridge, the Courtney Campbell (great drag name or what?) Bridge, tha Gandy Bridge, and the Bruce B Downs Parkway. The approach to Tampa International is named for some nobody, as is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland which is actually the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge. And of course, before it's all over newscasters will have wasted billions of dollars in air time saying the clumsy Dr. Martin Luther King Junior And You Cannot Abbreviate it Blvd.

Harvey Milk would not be the least recognizable name to have an airport named for.

William P Hobby Airport (Houston) ... sort of a chicken coop version of William Randolph Hearst.

I doubt that too many people know or remember who Dulles was.

Mineta San Jose Airport - Named for another nobody, Norman Mineta a former Secretary of Transportation.

  11. Did nobody in his entire economics department ever teach Niall Ferguson about the fallacy of sunk costs? When you know an investment is bad, don't double down; walk away! That's Economics 101.

    @David Hearne:
You must feel terribly oppressed at having to refer to African-Americans using a big, long, clunky, seven-syllable word, when you know a two-syllable word that would suffice. Names can be so inconvenient.

  12. Mmmmm....Shayne Graham......mmmmmmm.

Nice to see more athletes come out, I get the feeling that an active NFL player will do it before the season starts in September.

David Hearne, plenty of people know and remember who John Foster Dulles was, he was Eisenhower's Secretary of State.

  13. Actually, I DO I have a question for Carolyn Moos, on the new book as she is writing about her recent life events re: her former fiance (recently out athlete Jason Collins):

Carolyn, ladies don't kiss and tell, let alone kiss and publish/promote. Where, oh where is your dignity?

    Posted by: Patrick | May 8, 2013 10:46:17 PM

  14. @David Hearne: Wm P Hobby was Texas' Lt. Governor (the real center of power in Texas politics), and then Governor, and was a Houston civic asset, hence the airport name. And the Hobby family's Houston Post was a much better read than Hearst's Chronicle which is the largest newspaper in the US to never win a Pulitzer prize.

  15. All those people who previously thought Carolyn Moos was a great person can think again. She just wants to make money off of Jason Collins. Not very nice IMO.
