Sean Hayes to 'Save the World' as a Gay Dad

Hayes

Sean Hayes is returning to TV in a comedy titled Sean Saves the World, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Broadway World writes:

Sean (Sean Hayes, "Will & Grace") is a divorced gay dad who juggles a lot - his successful but demanding career, offbeat employees, pushy mom Lorna (Linda Lavin, "Alice"), and weekends with his teenage daughter, Ellie (Sami Isler). So when his 14-year-old bundle of joy moves in full-time, it's a whole new world. Never one to do anything halfway, Sean's intent on being the best dad ever, so he loads up on parenting how-to books and plans Pinterest-worthy family dinners. But it seems his company's new owner has decided Sean and his team should work longer hours, putting a damper on his homemaking plans and throwing a kink in Sean's perfectly constructed work/life balance. Ellie, a normal girl who wants to hang with her friends and eat on the run, sees this development as a plus. She loves her dad, but he's clearly going overboard. From keeping his boss happy, his employees motivated and enduring his mother's tactless "advice" to raising a smart, grounded and healthy kid, it's going to be a growing experience, to say the least. But if anyone can handle it all, it's Sean.

Also co-starring are Reno 911's Thomas Lennon, Lindsay Sloane from Weeds, and Echo Kellum from Ben and Kate.

  1. Sounds interesting if they down-play the gay-dating or lack-there-of. A family comedy...not a "gay" comedy. That's what killed "partners"...they just dropped the gay-jokes in at random.

  2. Thomas Lennon > Sean Hayes

  3. He's insanely talented, but I hope that they do this a more of an ensemble situation with a central character rather than the classic "show about one character with some supporting cast thrown in."

Maybe Sean has, or has developed, more range than I've seen from him in anything else he's done, but he's really best as a foil for other characters rather than at holding center stage on his own for too long.

I'll certainly watch it as it starts. I suspect the writing and directing will be more critical than just about anything else.

  7. Sounds like Hayes found a character who hid in the closet as long as he did. No thanks.

  8. If he behaves in the same effeminate manner he did in Will and Grace--and he no doubt will--then this series will not last beyond 4-5 episodes before being cancelled.

  9. His character's effeminacy (and his promiscuity, which I found really offensive at the time) didn't keep the show from running 8 years. I hated all those "Whiny White New Yorkers" shows.

But I'll definitely give this a chance for Linda Lavin.

  10. Sean Hayes is a comedic genius. I spent a year working with him on Broadway, where he played a straight character, most unlike Jack, and he had to audiences begging for more. What really rankles me is these armchair critics above who have decided that simply because an actor was brilliantly successful in one role ie.. Jack - he could never play any other character. This notion proves how little lay folk know about the art of acting and is, IMHO, the kind of bitchy uninformed pontificating that shows a lack of depth.
