Chris Kluwe Declines White House Invitation with Humorous Email: READ IT

Kluwe

LGBT ally and Oakland Raiders punter Chris Kluwe was invited to this year's LGBT Pride Month reception at the White House, and he is a bit heartbroken that he'll have to be training with the team instead.

Writes Kluwe in an RSVP letter of regret he posted to his Twitter feed:

"p.s. - if you really wanted to, I'm sure I could make a late supper if an F35 were to pick me up at the field right after practice. Just saying....

p.p.s. - Please don't do that. Then I'd be "that guy" on the team. You know. "That guy". (Plus it also seems like an extremely unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars."

  2. The F-35 is a single-seat aircraft so that wouldn't work anyways.

  6. Thank goodness Chris isn't going. I couldn't bear to see him get exploited by Obama.

Fresh from having thrown us under the bus re immigration reform, Obama hardly deserves our love...or our money.

  18. @BILLY: Who turns the President down? Chris Fu@kin Kluwe, that's who!

    Posted by: Marc C | Jun 3, 2013 1:10:56 PM

  19. @Billy-

Who turns down a White House invite for a mandatory practice?

Somebody who made $1M/year last year, got cut from that job amid mutterings from his coaches that he was not concentrating on football, and is competing for a spot that will pay him $600K this year if he can persuade his new coaches he's the best.

Can't wait for Kluwe's new book to be released!

  20. I don't get it personally. It's like ricky martin being honored for being in the closet. Now that he doesn't have a career he's a gay leader and fundraiser, where was he during the AIDS crisis? Please.

Sometimes the gay community hungers for celebrity so much it makes me want to throw up. Chris Kluwe is obviously a good man. But come on, let's recognize gay people who have fought the good fight, paid for it with their careers, dollars, lives, etc. Many have sacrificed a lot over the years and go unrecognized because they aren't part of the gay elite squad. Sometimes I just get very disappointed in the gay community for making a big deal out of someone who wrote a letter. so what? Many more gay men and women have fought a longer, tougher fight and deserve to go to a white house dinner much more than Mr. Kluwe.

  21. @JAMIE HINDS:

Do you know anything about Chris Kluwe?

You appear to think he no longer has a career in the NFL. In fact, he plays for the Oakland Raiders, having recently been traded from the Minnesota Vikings.

You also appear to believe he is closeted. In fact, he isn't even gay. He's a straight ally, and a damn good one! He's been outspoken and visible on the subject of marriage equality for the past year to year-and-a-half.

You appear to believe Chris Kluwe failed to step up during the AIDS Crisis'--a period of time which I believe would probably encompass 1984 when the disease first hit mainstream media and 1995 when HAART, 'triple cocktail' therapy became a life-saving medical reality. Given that Chris Kluwe was born in December 1981, he would have been 3 years old when we were learning about HIV/AIDS and 14 years old during 1995 when, thanks to medical advances, gay men stopped dying in droves from HIV disease. What exactly do you expect him to have done about HIV/AIDS during that period of his development?

We celebrate Chris Kluwe for a helluva lot more than the fact that he wrote a funny email. Please, pay attention!

  22. My breasts are small and humble; so you don't confuse them with mountains.

  23. Chris Kluwe would have made an excellent gay man. It's not his fault that he's heterosexual, after all, it is not a choice. So we should love and admire him just the way he is.
