Southern Baptists Approve Resolution Denouncing the Boy Scouts Policy Allowing Gay Scouts

The Southern Baptist Convention blasted the Boy Scouts in a resolution approved by its members on Wednesday, the AP reports:

SbcThe resolution was voted on by members at the denomination's annual meeting in Houston. It also calls on the Boy Scouts to remove executive and board leaders who tried to allow gays as both members and leaders without consulting the many religious groups that sponsor Scout troops.

While the resolution does not recommend that Southern Baptists drop ties with the Scouts, it expresses support for those churches and families that decide to do so. It also encourages churches and families who choose to remain with the Scouts to work toward reversing the new membership policy.

AndresenMore from the Baptist Press:

Opening Scouting to openly homosexual youth "has the potential to complicate basic understandings of male friendships, needlessly politicize human sexuality, and heighten sexual tensions within the Boy Scouts," the proposed resolution states.

The Southern Baptist Convention's statement of faith, the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, meanwhile, states that "Christians should oppose ... all forms of sexual immorality, including adultery, homosexuality, and pornography." Southern Baptists "consistently have expressed their opposition to the normalization of homosexual behavior in American culture through more than a dozen resolutions over the past thirty years," the proposed resolution states.

The proposed resolution states that Southern Baptists "declare our love in Christ for all young people regardless of their perceived sexual orientation, praying that God will bring all youth into a saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."

  1. Apparently the Baptist Church thinks that reality will "complicate basic understandings." Not surprising, is it?

  3. Aw, I got excited because I thought this was the Southern Poverty Law Center declaring war on the Boy Scouts.

I really think the major gay groups need to jump on the hate groups bandwagon here. The scouts is still spreading intolerance and supporting homophobia! They are just as bad as ever, not one SINGLE thing changed. Sure the hate groups are coming at this all wrong but I hate that there isnt a clear message to the scouts (and media) that this is not acceptable!

  4. the sooner the scouts go away and become a antiquated organization that they are, the better......start a New Scouting Program ....Called "Life Scouting" which Includes ALL

  7. The part that stuck out the most to me was:

"has the potential to ... heighten sexual tensions within the Boy Scouts"

Heighten implies that there was already sexual tensions to begin with... What are they trying to suggest? That their biblical way was already causing levels of 'perversion' in the scouts? Idiots.

  8. I would like to pass a resolution denouncing the Southern Baptists. Really a shame that they have to continue to exist...

  9. They're just going on record early because everybody knows that the next really destructive hurricane will be entirely the boys scouts fault.

  10. Southern Baptists, of the south ( USA I presume) and their neuroses about sex..........."complicate basic understandings of male friendship....." Sounds to me like Southern Baptists are insecure in their own sexuality if they fear "complications" of their "friendships".

And the rest of the world should give a flying phuck about this irrelevant backwoods coven.....because....?

  11. Wait, the Southern Baptist Convention-- which has its very origins in the act of aggressively supporting slavery-- is being intolerant? Get outta town!

  12. Anyone who passes this off lightly is foolish.
This convention represents over 15 million voters in the south. Brokered by Ralph Reed theirs was the vote that gave Bush the nomination and the election in 2004.
Ken Mehlman, Ralph Reed & Karl Rove were the principal architects in crafting a platform of anti gay animus to gin up the conservative vote. Anti gay legislation was placed on a dozen state ballots and we're still dealing with the results of those initiatives today.

This group is a large block of the fundamentalist section of organized religion that is established, well healed, and oriented for political activism.
They need to be exposed for what they are.

  13. WHO cares. BSA is STILL bigoted. Their message is gay youths OK but they become sick, demented pedophiles they day they turn 18 so they are not welcome as leaders. As far as SBC - again, WHO cares - a bunch of COMPLETELY brainwashed idiots that believe in creation as two teenagers, a talking snake and a magic apple. Never grounded in reality!

  14. this is great news! the more bigots isolate themselves, the smaller they become, and they become easier to ignore and dismiss altogether. keep it up, southern baptists!

  15. Has anyone ever actually added up the actual seating capacity of all the Southern Baptist Churches? I'll bet it is no where near what they claim in membership.

Same goes for the LSD, Catholics, and Scientologists/

  16. not EVEN news.

  17. Those brainwashed creationists still vote.
They organize and vote as a block. State legislatures and the US House is loaded with reps these people supported. Know why there are 30 states with constitutional amendments against marriage equality, or why kids in the deep south will be years to achieve equality ... it's this group right here.
So, who cares? I care. I like to know the political opposition and what they're up to.

The larger picture here isn't even about the BSA. It's about the power of organized religion in politics.
    Ignore it at your peril.

  19. Yet another thing they will have to apologize for in the future just like they apologized for their racism about 15 years ago.

  20. Who cares? Southern Baptists are racist anyways.
