Vladimir Putin Signs Law Banning Promotion Of 'Homosexual Propaganda'

PutinIt's a sad day for our LGBT brothers and sisters in Russia. Today, President Vladimir Putin signed into law the disgusting bill banning the promotion of "homosexual propaganda" among minors. RIA Novosti reports:

Gay propaganda with the use of mass media or Internet resources will see harsher penalties of 50,000-100,000 rubles ($1,520-3,050) for individuals, 100,000-200,000 rubles ($3,050-6,115) for officials and 1 million rubles or 90-day suspension for legal entities.

While the law's proponents argue it is aimed at protecting children from harmful influences, critics allege the move is part of a broader crackdown on Russia's gay community.

Even before the law's passage, international human rights organizations had publicly expressed their concerns that the antigay bill will be used to target openly LGBT Olympians at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Putin, meanwhile, attempted to downplay accusations of antigay bigotry by claiming sexual minorities are "full fledged members of our society and are not being discriminated against in any way." Putin should tell that to the dozens of gay rights supporters who were arrested at a bloody clash in St. Petersburg yesterday.

  1. We should make speaking russian illegal in the US. Everyday I hear them speaking their borscht pig-latin. I think it should be a crime to speak russian.

  2. Wow, Kev C, way to be ignorant.

I plan to personally boycott these Olympics. I wish the US would withdraw. Russia is not a safe place for gay athletes or attendees. How can we send gay athletes to a place where their very presence is a crime?

  3. The Russian language isn't the problem. (Quite a beautiful language, actually.) Thugs like Putin are.

  4. We should definately penalize and fine RT - Russia Today news. It's anti-american and anti-gay propagada directly from Putin himself.

  5. We need to pressure the Olympic Committee to move next year's Winter Games. Russia is clearly hostile to gay people and many winter sports athletes, their coaches, and others associated with the games are gay and at risk while they are in Russia.

  6. Agreed, houdentenor. If efforts to move the Olympics fail, I say a simple boycott is in order for all nations who value their lgbt citizens.

  7. Houden...I think you're right. There's plenty of time for a big rucus, international and confrontational but I think it should be a big solemn moral affair, with nation after nation lining up on the borders of Russia, millions of people in cities as well as in the country in tents and vans, all line up along the border with candle light vigils and loudspeaker encouragement to the gay and - let's say - "odd" people of the world, on the other side. It should be done with loving outrage, but should ultimately be about the value of co-existent diversity among peoples. We should profoundly outface and embarrass Russia.

  8. They need a whole century to catch up. After Muslim and African countries, former Soviet countries (and their satellites) come in line.

  9. As a gay man living in Boston, child of Russian parents, and who grew up speaking Russian and English both, this makes me sad to see. Sad to see how Putin is using nationalism to divide Russia by ensuring who is part of the included group and who is part of the excluded group. Sad to see comments like Kev C who spout ignorance about the Russian language.

I don't think calling for a ban on the Olympics will help matters or do much good for the status of Russian gay men and women. The boycotts of 1980 and 1984 certainly didn't do anything effective. What I do think will help matters is a coordinated effort by Western nations to impose a new Jackson-Vanik amendment that will tie trade to human rights in Russia.

  10. U mad comrade?

An Olympic cancellation, yeah that's gonna happen. Meanwhile, how about all you liberals step up and boycott RT News?

How about it, huh? Oh, maybe liberals aren't as pro-gay as they pretend to be.

  11. You're right, Kev C, we should just round up every Russian we see and put them in conversation camps until they can learn how to treat a mistreated group in society as human beings. That'll show'em!....You're a putz.

  12. Concentration camps, I meant.

  13. You can dress up a monkey to look decent still does not make the monkey any more intelligent. I hope US keep an eye of those tea beggers because this is what happen when you let an uneducated and uncivilized thug run a country.

  14. You want US athletes to forego their shot at the W.Olympics, but you can't even turn off Putin's propaganda machine; RT News. Created by the Kremlin by Putin's men for the explicit purpose of pro-russian propaganda.

    Uh huh. Typical anti-gay liberals.

We won in the US, we'll win in the USSR.

    Chill.

  18. Kev C. I speak Russian. I know many Russian gays. The problem is not Russians, but the Oligarchy of Putin and the Orthodox church. Many Russians want to be free of Putin but are trapped. The solution is to get rid of Putin and the Chruch. That may take another revolution.

  20. One of the reasons why Putin is crusading against "gay propaganda" is because of the perception of pedophilia in the gay community. This was also a concern for his adoption ban. And maybe that's a problem with russian gays, since pedophilia is so widespread in russia. It's a legitimate concern, but people have also suspected Putin of pedophilia as well. Homosexual pedophilia to be exact.

So yeah, some of this falls on the fact that russians, gay and straight are messed up and amoral. All the more reason to stop the huge amount of immigration from russia to the US. We just don't want them here.

  21. We could call and write our cable and satellite companies and pressure them to drop RT TV. They dropped Current once it was bought by Al Jazeera, why should dropping RT TV be a problem? It's not a lot, but it's a start.

  22. Ce-le-brate good times! In trying to figure out how I might put in my two cents on the demise of DOMA, I think I may have inadvertently stumbled onto the perfect wedding song for a couple of love-struck dudes. It's a little rough-and-tumble, but it's got a great dance beat. You can even play it in Russia without fear of reprisal. Check it out!

  25. People just need to boycott RT besides, it is not as "questioning " as "they" say it is. Rehashing the same old stuff and spamming the net all of the time.

Banning the Olympics will not do anything but if more people shut off RT that would make a difference. Liberals who watch RT forget who is behind it. Ultra conservatives that are against every thing that a Liberal stands for. It's not just the non reporting of the gay issue in Russia RT does not report there are a lot of things RT does not report.

Reddit just got rid of RT due to spamming their site. Boycott RT. Not just for gay rights but for being copy cat of FOX news but using the liberal agenda to attract viewers. RT is using Liberals for views.

Why people have not caught on to this is a worry. You don't need James Kirchick to prove it, the proof was already there.
