Larry The Cable Guy Is Probably Not Anti-Gay: VIDEO

Larry the Cable Guy

In an interview with Larry King on "Larry King Now", Dan "Larry the Cable Guy" Whitney voices his opinion on homosexuality:

"I'm so sick of gay this, gay that. I could care less. It ain't affecting my life at all."

Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it beats combative antagonism and outright bigotry. Although, his follow-up statement about "Everything offends everybody" could be directed at either side. The full interview can be seen AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. Such a pity this sensitive soul has to be bothered by a bunch of whiny queers!

  2. I doubt he's homophobic, just fully aware that the people who are making him rich are.

  3. I recommend listening to David Cross' open letter to Larry the Cable Guy:

In it, Cross apologizes for calling his humor "homophobic." It's not homophobic - it's cheap. "Madder than a queer with lockjaw on Valentine's Day" isn't homophobic. It's just stupid. Over half the world sucks cock, so what's funny about picking on the gays for it?

So while there's a subjective evaluation to made of whether or not he's a heterosupremacist, his racism is pretty evident. "Towelhead commies" etc.

  4. i think the german public pretty much said the same when they generally turned a blind eye to those who suffered around them. it wasn't them being targeted, so what. when the war ended, they were forced to walk into the deserted camps and bury the dead.

  5. Isn't he a big closet case?

  6. Watched the video (easy to find on Hulu's search engine).

My take is that Larry TCG is probably typical of most of the people that are in my area of the country. They're conservative but they don't necessarily hate gays. However, they aren't going out of their way to be friendly or welcoming to gays either. It's passive tolerance instead of active tolerance and there's a difference. Passive means you aren't going to say anything negative about gay people. Active means you'll say "I don't agree with that 'lifestyle', but..."

And yes, tolerance is not quite the right stance, but it's better than outright hate. I've experienced both and I'd take the former every time.

When the camera is off, he's probably not in favor of anything gay, but he realizes that he'd be raked over the coals if he said anything negative, so he has to toe the line. However, the fact that he would not answer the question directly says pretty much everything.

The avoidance itself becomes the answer.

He's wrong about blue collar, however. In my neck of the woods, (southern Indiana) most blue collar people are Democrat. In fact, 7 out of 9 counties in the southern part of this state have a Democratic majority and voted Blue in the last 3 elections. And the area is almost 80 percent blue collar if not totally unemployed.

  7. I COULDN'T care less about what Larry The Cable Guy's stance on homosexuality is.

  8. I'm so sick of people saying they're sick of hearing about gay this and that. If they would stop voting for *ssholes, we wouldn't have to keep harping about our basic civil rights.

  9. Uh, Larry the Cable Guy is a character...

  10. I worked with Dan Whitney indirectly for more than a decade through radio. He's far from homophobic. Larry The Cable Guy is a character that has evolved from "redneck right=wing, anti-Clinton commentator" to "funny southern guy who can be used in Disney movies". Dan himself is kind, engaging, and quite humble.

  11. That david cross letter is amazing!

  12. Dan Whitney = Larry the Cable Guy, and there's a very blurry line between the two. IMO, he basically amplifies his roots for the character.

That interview was Dan, not a character.

  13. Who cares what Larry the Cable Guy thinks?

  14. This is more performance art than interview. Dan Whitney has an Ivy League education and an upper middle class background, and a west coast native accent.

  15. 15 years ago he would have outright said he was "not in favor of the gay lifestyle." The climate has changed and heterosexuals who are hostile to gay people now give indifferent responses.

  16. Really. Somebody actually listened to an interview with Larry the Cable Guy. Life must really be too long!
