Lawmakers Demand Action from John Kerry on Russia's Anti-Gay Laws and the Sochi Games

83 members of Congress, led by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) have sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry asking "what efforts have been undertaken, especially efforts undertaken in coordination with other foreign governments" to assure the safety of LGBT athletes and visitors to Russia during the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, the HuffPost reports.

NadlerSays the letter, in part:

We are writing to you regarding the troubling implications of a recently-enacted Russian law criminalizing actions or statements deemed to be in support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. In light of the fact that the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games are scheduled to be held in Sochi, Russia, we would like to know what diplomatic measures the State Department is planning to take to ensure that American LGBT athletes, staff and spectators, and their supporters, are not arrested, detained or otherwise penalized during the Sochi Games.

The law, signed by President Vladimir Putin on June 30th, will penalize any individuals or groups found to be publicly supportive of LGBT equality. Press reports have indicated that punishable offenses would include public acknowledgment of one’s orientation, displays of affection between same-sex partners, statements in support of LGBT rights, and the use of symbols such as rainbows that are attributed to the LGBT community. Foreign nationals found to be in violation of the law could be arrested and detained for up to 15 days.

...

We are particularly troubled because while the newly signed law is the most recent and most extreme codification of Russia’s maltreatment of its LGBT citizens, it is also part of larger trend of anti-LGBT actions in Russia.

...

In light of the importance of U.S. leadership on LGBT issues, and the quickly-approaching Sochi Games, we urge the State Department to determine the appropriate course of action to assure the safety and well being of LGBT and LGBT— supporting individuals involved in or attending the 2014 Sochi Olympics and Paralympics. We look forward to hearing from you regarding what efforts have been undertaken, especially efforts undertaken in coordination with other foreign governments, and are committed to working together with you on this issue.

Actor Ben Whishaw Confirms He's Gay, Married to His Partner

Whishaw

British actor Ben Whishaw (right, Skyfall, Brideshead Revisited, Cloud Atlas) has confirmed he's gay via a statement from a publicist about his marriage to his partner, Australian composer Mark Bradshaw, which took place nearly a year ago. Up till now it was thought Whishaw was gay but never confirmed because of the actor's hesitancy to discuss it.

The Daily Mail reports:

Speculation was sparked by an interview he gave to the gay magazine Out in March 2011 while playing a homosexual character in an off-Broadway play, The Pride.

When the interviewer asked whether it was important for young gay people to have positive role models, Whishaw replied: ‘I feel in my heart that it’s important, but I don’t quite know yet the way to go about that. Maybe that’s the transitional thing I feel I’m in the middle of at the moment.’

Last night Whishaw’s spokesman confirmed the civil partnership, saying: ‘Ben has never hidden his sexuality, but like many actors he prefers not to discuss his family or life outside of his work.

‘Due to speculation, I can confirm that Ben and Mark entered into a civil partnership in August 2012. They were proud to do so and are very happy.’

Pallone also spoke out about the situation in Russia: "The Olympic Games are for the athletes, not for political or religious figures. Athletes come in all shapes and sizes, colors and orientations," said David Pallone, a former umpire in Major League Baseball. "I truly believe that the IOC should really start thinking about the athletes before they select the host cities."

Hate Crime Against New Orleans Gay Activists Caught on Surveillance Video: WATCH

(via michael democker times picayune)

Video of an early morning hate crime being committed against John Hill and John Weimer, Jr., two prominent New Orleans gay activists, was caught on surveillance camera on Saturday. A man stole the Pride flag from in front of their historic district home and sprayed "fags" on their front door. Hill is the chairman of Louisiana's Forum for Equality, an LGBT rights organization. Police are seeking assistance in identifying the perpetrator.

The Times Picayune reports:

The video, filmed from a neighboring gallery, shows a van parking directly in front of Hill's townhouse in historic Julia Row, in the 600 block of Julia Street. A man emerges, walks to the rear of the van and pulls down a ladder. He walks to the sidewalk, sets the ladder in place, climbs up it and tears the flag from Hill's second-story balcony. He puts the flag and the ladder in the van.

Then, instead of leaving, the man re-emerges holding a can of spray paint. He sprays an anti-gay slur on a shutter before getting back in the van and driving away.

Hill and Weimer are undaunted by the attacks and have replaced the stolen Pride flag with two new ones.

Said Hill to FOX8: "I thought what an idiot. He thinks he's intimidating me, well, you got the wrong gay fella. I'm just doubling down now."
