American Family Association Finally Ends Its Failed Boycott of The Home Depot

Home Depot

The anti-gay hate group American Family Association announced this week that it would be officially ending its ineffective, three-year boycott of The Home Depot over the company's policies in support of LGBT people. According to AFA's director of special projects Randy Sharp (pictured), the boycott was ultimately a success, although he also failed to offer any specifics about what actions the company took that led to AFA's declaration of victory.

RsharpSaid Sharp:

"We're glad to report that we are suspending the boycott of The Home Depot. After monitoring the company for several months, we're satisfied that the company has withdrawn its major financial contributions to gay activist groups and their activities. [...]

We certainly do expect The Home Depot to deny that they have turned back their contributions to gay activist groups, but AFA has monitored the company - and actions speak louder than words.

Back in 2010, AFA began the nationwide boycott of The Home Depot over the company's commitment to "furthering the homosexual agenda." Executives at The Home Depot, however, remained committed to promoting diversity and continued to support organizations such as Out and Equal Workplace Advocates and the Human Rights Campaign. Indeed, Home Depot spokesman Stephen Holmes offered a response AFA's announcement this week, indicating that nothing at the company has changed since the boycott began.

"We haven't made any changes to our policies for inclusion and respect of all people, regardless of their sexual orientation. We have not directed our associates to discontinue participation in Pride or other community events, and have no intention of doing so.

Towleroad readers will remember AFA's One Million Moms boycott of JC Penney last year over the company's hiring of Ellen DeGeneres as spokesperson being a similar dud. Its nice to see AFA's standards of 'success' continue to diminish year after year...

  1. I'm sure lying to their flock isn't too difficult when they lie to themselves daily about a narcissistic boogeyman in the sky.

  2. In related news, the Fischer's neighbors are elated the house will finally get repainted and the front walk fixed. Place is an eyesore.

  3. I'm not naive but I'm really surprised - almost amazed - that a grown-up wrote that AFA announcement and expects it to be taken as serious and truthful. Politics and civil rights aside, how do they look their children in the eye and feel that they've done a hard day's work? An honest day's work? It's so childish. Either say nothing, or say "yeah, it didnt work out as well as we hoped but we'll get 'em next time".

Last week I played chutes and ladders with a 4-year old. When I reached Home first I said, "I won" and the 4- year old, 10 spaces behind me said "No, I won!" How is this different?

  4. Those hateful so-called Christians don't stand a chance against gay boys who need to renovate....

  5. Home Depot has steadily improved financially throughout the boycott, and in part as a result of the boycott, has chosen to be even more vocally supportive of the LGBT community than it was (though it was certainly supportive before that.)

If this is what the AFA considers a success, may they have many more successes in the future!

I recommend that they and their supporters consider boycotting the American political process, in an effort to achieve similar gains.

  6. To have a successful boycott, they must have had some goals in mind that succeeded. What were they? Turning people anti-gay? Making Home Depot poor? Proving to the American people what dipshits they are? Aha! Success! One out of three!

  7. They're taking their cue from any number of American presidents: Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan -- just declare victory and go home.

  8. Straight from Home Depot; "... We have not directed our associates to discontinue participation in Pride or other community events, and have no intention of doing so..."

So AFA is now lying to themselves?

    How Christian of them.

What a pathetic bunch of turds.

  9. The best thing Home Depot could do right now would be to make a substantial donation to marriage equality.

  10. To be honest, until I read this, I wasn't even aware that Home Depot was being boycotted by the so called "American Family Association". So, I wonder, I didn't hear about it until now, it must not have been been heard by 99.99999999% of Americans.

  12. @ Phoenix Justice: I'd be willing to bet that HD didn't know it either.

  14. Calling off the JC Penney boycott was a major strategic error. The company basically imploded around the same time as the boycott. Although the decline had nothing to do with the boycott it would be easy for them to claim credit for it. This home depot thing just seems like a joke.

  15. Homo Depot rocks!!

  16. Brian1, but they did try to take credit for the demise of JCPenney. They honestly believe that Ellen drove all those shoppers away...not the removal of coupons, fixing prices at higher levels than sales prices and calling it "everyday low pricing," removing brands like St. John's Bay or reducing Liz Claiborne, and the bizarre decision not to test these programs in a few stores prior to roll out.

  17. j.c. penney's fall had to do with very bad management decisions and failure to establish a strong customer identity . home depot sales have continually grown and their stores are always crowded . the afa should declare a boycott of kmart or sears and probably could claim major victories since their businesses are already inthe toilet.

  18. For a boycott to work, you need a very sympathetic press, and they don't have that.

    Posted by: anon | Sep 7, 2013 2:38:11 PM

  19. I wasn't even aware that the AFA was boycotting Home Depot - that's how ineffectual it was. I'm not surprised that they lied rather than admit defeat - this is par for the course for groups like the AFA.

They should just save everyone some time and make a list of companies they AREN'T boycotting.

  20. AFA learned what some LGBT folks need to learn. You don't start a boycott with which you have no chance of making a significant impact. It just shows your weakness.

  21. Anon, you don't need press support when it can be preached in churches every Sunday.

  23. They and other Christians tried doing the same thing to Ford when they started offering same-sex benefits to employees. Needless to say it didn't work.

Ford's sales dipped the 1st month after the boycott, then went up month after month after that. hehe

    AFA is going to hell.

  24. AFA's Home Depot was a major fail, but in order to save face and keep their contributions flowing, they HAD to withdraw the boycott and proclaim victory. TRUTH is, in February 2011 when AFA ordered its sheep to boycott, HD stock stood at $38.32, Sept 6, 2013, $78.28. Sales at HD rose considerable during AFA's boycott. AFA is all about deception, lies and money. Nothing AFA says or does is trustworthy.

  25. I don't believe for one moment that Home Depot's Heart is in this for Diversity's sake. The homosexual lifestyle has been promoted at a grandiose level by the lame-street media and sit-coms for so long that it now has almost universal acceptance in American culture and so it does not fear a boycott of it because HD goes with the cultural winds. If HD really believed in promoting Diversity as other companies say they do as well, then why is it that almost every company has Breast Cancer Awareness donations and product promotions and almost no company has a Prostate Cancer Awareness month; same thing. HD is just riding the cultural winds. When traditional religious morality was popular in the 80's innumerable big companies joined in with the religious boycotts. HD is just being hypocritical.
