Bigotry Finally Puts UK Christian B&B Owners Out of Business

Chymorvah

We've been writing on and off since 2009 about Peter and Hazelmary Bull, who denied a gay couple a double room in their Bed and Breakfast, and then twice lost a court battle in an anti-bias suit brought by the couple.

BullNow, the Daily Mail reports that the Bulls are closing up shop because they have no business.

The Chymorvah, which allows only married couples to share a bed, also lost its listing with hotel database Visit England because of its stance against the 2007 Equalities Act. And despite a good summer of sunshine they were not even half full and believe they were the only hotel in the county ‘that had rooms left.’

The couple claim they have received death threats, vandalism and had their website corrupted with pornography. They claim they have had the bolts removed from the wheels of their car and most recently found a dead rabbit nailed to their fence all over the issue of who they allow to stay in their guesthouse.

In 2011 the couple were ordered to pay £3,600 to civil partners Mr Hall and Mr Preddy after they were refused a room at the the grade II listed hotel on religious grounds. The landmark legal case heard at Bristol County Court polarised opinions and effectively sealed the supremacy of gay rights over Christian belief under the Sexual Orientation Regulations introduced in 2007.

  1. Never met a gay person who would bring harm to another animal just to make a statemant. Now if it was a story about a gay couple who had thier dog killed and it's head displayed on their front lawn by a bigot...that I would believe.

  4. Nice to see JUSTICE!
Why do most bigots look so physically unattractive and BITTER? Probably all that hatred they carry around on a daily basis inside of themselves. Bye Bye BIGOTS!

  6. There was no need to call for a boycott of this establishment, their bigotry did it for them.
BTW, citations needed of these attacks on them.

    They're lying.

    One powerful word.

  11. I actually feel quite sorry for them. Don't get me wrong, I am opposed to their bigotry, but death threats and so on? Totally unacceptable. Just a shame they couldn't open their minds and move with the times.

  12. Classic example of the British sex allergy at work.

  13. It looks like a nice place. Hopefully someone with enough sense to know that operating a business is not your personal morality play will take it over.

As for them - you reap what you sow.

  14. Supremacy over christian belief. YES.

There is no amount of religious beliefs that can justify discrimination. At the end of the day it is still hate and negative. No one wants that.

Keep your filthy religious beliefs to yourself. It should not trump rights of people who are born "different" and can't help it. You on the other hand...

  15. Ehh I'd feel bad typically, but honestly they didn't do themselves any favors by turning people away.

If they truly were the only hotel, "that had rooms left" they they shoulda advertised more.

There is probably plenty of other businesses that didn't have the bad PR/Baggage they had and who made all the right moves and still were shut down.

  16. The free market works again. The death threats, vandalism, and posting of porn on their website was uncalled for.

  17. The pharse "and effectively sealed the supremacy of gay rights over Christian belief under the Sexual Orientation Regulations introduced in 2007"

is utter BS, and shame on you, Andy, for posting THAT garbage.

We don't need the backlash from Christians over mischaracterizing this as some sort of victory over religious belief.

This has to do with public accommodations being available to the public, period.

"the supremacy of gay rights over Christian belief" Is a BS phrase, shame on you Andy, for being such a f*cking troll.

  18. No need for the dead rabbit...though it WAS kind of Monty Python. It should've been fake.

  19. I would be very cautious in believing anything about threats. We have heard of these reports in our own community which turned out to be falsified to gain some advantage. Hopefully they actually filed police reports on these threats; for proof of harm, if nothing else. I'm certain that their solicitor and / or barrister would have had them report them as proof of discrimination against themselves and bring it up in court. If no police report; no incidences.

  20. We have a local bakery who is going this route. They've already closed their 'public' business but they're going to loose the broader legal one soon.

    Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Not to put a fine point on it, but Peter looks like a closet case. Really sad, having to put up this false front to protect your 'secret'.

  22. It is unfortunate (also) they seem to have been run-over by a large truck (repeatedly)...for, what appears to be, several hours. You know: Sort of 'back and forth'. Maybe it was twilight. Maybe the driver had been drinking. Sad. Very sad, indeed.

  23. Generally bigots cry wolf to garner sympathy and to make their case stronger--so these "christians" are probably lying. However, on the off chance they aren't, the vandalism should be investigated (just to prove them liars). The loss of advertising and the loss of court cases was punitive enough and just right; anything else is unjustified.

  24. They're Christianists, which means they're liars. That's what Christianists are. They believe lies and they tell lies and, like all other Christianists, they're terrible at telling them.

What, no black mass on their front lawn?

The best part of this story is that they brought it all upon themselves for no good reason whatsoever. To quote Edward G. Robinson, "Where is your god now?"
