North Carolina Teacher Suspended for Showing Macklemore's 'Same Love' in Class

A Taylorsville, North Carolina teacher has been suspended for showing Macklemore's marriage equality anthem "Same Love" to students, the Charlotte Observer reports:

WestalexanderAlexander County Schools Associate Superintendent Jeff Peal told the Taylorsville Times: “At West Alexander Middle School, there was an inappropriate video shown in class, outside the bounds of the curriculum that called for disciplinary action last week.”

Peal didn’t name the teacher in the article.

Peal also told the Taylorsville Times (which warned that "the song has a theme that is inclusive of homosexual values") that the teacher will be back in school this week.

Macklemore's video, as the paper notes, was ranked 13 on Billboard this week, is the first song about same-sex marriage to hit the top 40, and has been viewed more than 78 million times on YouTube.

  4. Does this really surprise anyone? We're talking about North Carolina here, Jesse Helms Country, where everybody's neck is red.
So sad to hear about all the homophobia still prevalent in the U.S.A.

  5. "...and has been viewed more than 78 million times on YouTube."

And I'd be willing to bet that Peal and the rest of those clowns really believe none of the 78M views came from NC.

  6. NC = New MS

Never seen a state regress so quickly.

  7. "outside curriculum?"
It may be true if it was a mathematics class. Or was it social science or music class?

  8. DAVID FROM CANADA clearly you haven't been to NC lately. The governor is ethnic East Indian. The population east of I95 are mostly transplants who have abandoned their ancestral homes in Virginia and Maryland due to the Green March of aliens into those states.

  9. Middle school? Really? How utterly shocking some parents are pissed about a rap video. Why, we watched them every day.

  10. Whether the suspension is legal or not maybe the teacher views helping even a single gay kid as being well worth it.

Pat McCrory is Irish. You're thinking of South Carolina, where the governor is Indian-American.

  12. Same Love is fine but wouldn't it have been better if it was sung by someone who was out and proud? Why is it that we gay guys have to settle for a 'straight ally' or a woman to do the shout-outs for us?

When are we going to stand on our own two feet and start questioning why the music industry won't accept us as capable singers and musicians in our own right?

  13. @Seriously: Hear, hear. Great comment. If it helped the kids, period, fantastic!

  14. Hey Troll Bob (or Rick/Jason), Mary Lambert who sings in the song is an out lesbian.

  15. As long as Texas is seceding they should haul old NC with em'. Jeebus will take care of everything. (always has/snark)

  16. RJ,

Mary Lambert is not a male. I'm talking about male homosexuals, not female homosexuals. I make the distinction because homophobia is as much a war on males as it is on male homosexuality. Women also experience homophobia but it is nothing like that experienced by us guys.

Women always get a pass and are allowed to have big hits like Katy Perry did with I Kissed A Girl. Where is the male equivalent? You'll never see it because liberals always give preferential treatment to women.

  17. Best video ever, not to mention one of the most romantic songs ever. Who would have ever thought the most pro-gay musician in history would be a heterosexual rapper?

  19. DB,

Where did you get the idea that Macklemore is 100% hetero?

  20. There isn't enough info here to determine whether or not the suspension was warranted. That said, the classroom is not the teachers private soap box. The school district or some authority provides the course content the teacher is expected to teach.

  22. School is about EDUCATION. The video and spoken lyrics are perfect for children to understand love and same sex attraction. If middle school children viewed this video less homophobia would follow in high school and in their lives after school. The teacher was simply trying to prepare her students for life with an understanding of the world as it really is, not some imagined world where gay people do not exist or can be prayed away.

If the school board thinks it was inappropriate material - the board is inappropriate for not recognizing real education.. Congratulations to the teacher!

  23. Around a year and a half ago I was substituting in a middle school where, during a little chunk of free time, teachers would sometimes show funny/clever YouTube videos. This was when Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" was EVERYWHERE, and someone online had put together a "supercut" of people from around the U.S. lip-synching to it. Well, one of the people was a drag queen who was onscreen for about 1.5 seconds, but of course that was what the class noticed. I gently but firmly brushed it away with, "Yes, that was a drag queen. The point is, isn't it remarkable that this song has brought together such a wide diversity of people who all love it? Look at the parade of humanity going by." Didn't get in trouble with the administration, but I thought that was a pretty strong defensive argument if any kid would've brought it up. (I also showed them the movie poster for "Brokeback Mountain"--right after "Titanic," which it was clearly modeled on--for a project they were doing designing movie posters for scripts they were writing.)

  24. Bob : Well, if he is not 100% your complains has no sense.

At least if they are real complains and not simple trolling

  25. Doing weekend errands in Greensboro, NC last Saturday, I put the radio on a local pop music station, which I don't usually do. In one day, on one station, at the times I just happened to be in the car, I heard Same Love three times (got verklempt all three times at "but it's a damn good place to start"). It seemed like they had it on a hour-and-a-half or two-hour rotation. The geographical condescension in the comments on this site is always interesting to me. How long has your state had same sex marriage? Now that you have it, you just want to write off the rest of us? Jesse Helms was last elected in 1996. Were all your senators elected before that liberal and gay-affimative? North Carolina was an outlier in the south for decades, with public funding for abortion for poor women, excellent public universities and no constitutional ban on same sex marriage. We almost always had Democratic governors and always had Democratic legislatures. In 2010, as a direct result of the White House's mishandling of health care reform, our entire government got turned over to Republicans for the foreseeable future. So thanks, brothers. Maybe if we can get a passport we can visit your country some time.
