Gay Couple Beaten by Group in Pittsburgh Hate Crime: VIDEO

Stoviak

Ben Stoviak and his boyfriend Aaron were attacked outside of Remedy Bar on Butler Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday night after being taunted by a group of men.

Wrote Stoviak on Facebook:

Last night, a group of men attacked me and my boyfriend on Butler Street in Lawrenceville. After yelling, from across the street, "Faggot!" at us, I replied, "yes, we're faggots!" Immediately after, the group of men ran across the street and began hitting, kicking, and stomping me. The mark on my right cheek is a bootprint. Aaron threw himself on top of me to discourage them from continuing the assault, but they began kicking him in the head, as well.

To the women who saw the ordeal, wrote down their license plate number, and stayed to talk with the police, thank you.

Three of these men have been arrested since the assault. Aaron and I were in the hospital until almost 10 am so that the doctors could take MRI, CT scans, and x-rays to make sure there was no internal bleeding.

I don't ask you to cheer on my romantic and sexual lives. I do, however, expect people not to act violently against one another because they do not share tastes and preferences.

  1. Verbal assault is a frequent precursor to physical assault. Be prepared to protect yourself. Apply for a lawful weapon permit and train yourself to use it responsibly. You have 2nd Amendment rights. Use them. Also use your camera phone to take pictures of anyone who says anything confrontational to you to discourage them from escalating it.

  2. Also demand police setup sting operations to catch gay bashers for once. Cops can out as couples and arrest anyone who attacks them. Gay people and straight friends and family pay taxes. The police can start these sting operations to add to community safety.

Gag. What self-respecting 'mo refers to being gay as "tastes and preferences". Gawd.

  4. ha ha...what did James Carville call PA, something about the space between Philly and Pittsburgh being Mississippi north? You can say the same thing about other states, too.

  5. "You guys have just witnessed the birth of Philip Higgins, Rick/Hagatha/Adrenan P's new alias. That rant agains liberalism is copy and pasted from an old Rick post. Ignore the troll."

Nah, that was not a Rick post. Rick would have called the victims sissies and gone on a non-sequitor about how Lady Gaga and Madonna. It was a Jason/Adam/Bob post. How exciting though that his new alias includes a surname.

  6. Hate crimes actually have increased. It's not just increased reporting. There are more hate crimes now than there were in 2000. And it is increased visibility causing the hate. Similar to how bullying in schools hasn't really decreased much.

Yes, more is being done against these homophobic acts, but make no mistake, homophobia/transphobia is still VERY prevalent in society. The answer, of course, is not to cower in fear and retreat but instead hold our ground and be even more proud of who we are.

  8. For those of you suggesting a concealed carry, AKA a CHL - According to the NYT as of 2010, only 4 states in the U.S. (Tennessee, Arizona, Georgia, Virginia) allow you to carry a gun into a bar. This may have changed already. Concealed carry isn't a viable option unless you live in one of those states OR you're willing to risk going to jail for a long while, usually on felony charges, for violating your state's laws on a 51% Alcoholic Business Code...there are so many other laws governing CHLs, so it's not just a free pass to carry wherever you feel like.

Better security as a deterrent, regular visible patrols, and traveling in groups of more than 2 will keep you safer along with having a good grasp on physical self-defense and being prepared.

  9. This experience brought to you by the enabling from blood thirsty terrorists such as Tony Perkins and the FRC, Bryan Fischer and the AFA, Brian Brown and NOM, and the rest of the grotesque uncivilized Anti-gay Inc and Religious-Reich.

  10. @Crispy

As a long time observer of trolls on this site, I think you've got it a bit mixed up. Rick and Jason are the same person, and this Higgins thing is definitely the same person, as are Adam and Brian and several other names that come and go. Hagatha used to be David Hearne, who changed his name to Hagatha a few months ago. Many people put this person as another Rick creation, but personally I think it's separate.

  11. @Philip Higgins/Adrenan P - You're an empty headed moron. Why don't YOU do something useful like find a bridge and jump? You're as useful as a used condom with as much going on in your empty little head. Of COURSE the conservatives are so in favor of gay people and treat us with respect, as evidenced by the PA governors recent comments about gay people. Shut up stupid. Maybe a psych evaluation is in order, sorry you'll never have a date because you're most likely as ugly on the outside as you are on the inside.

  12. Sorry to read about this crime. However, the responses here intrigue me . I live in Pennsylvania and know first hand how biased the population is. Too often the MO it to shoot the messenger rather than get the message. We have been in the crosshairs of bias for decades and live in the state. To the extent that a neighbor shot at Security light as a warning because we stood up to him. But what has been more disappoint is the response we got for LGBT folks in the region. Most tell us to get use to it or move or just ignore us. Reporting these crimes is important but don't expect the police to be unbiased in their investigation.
Hopefully these creature will be prosecuted to the fullest and the victims heal fast.

  15. I am a Pittsburgher.. this is very unusual. It doesn't happen here very often. I am sure the police will take it very seriously.. and that is not sarcasm.

  16. @PhilipHiggins: "Liberal Pittsburgh" What are you talking about? Pittsburgh has a high concentration of slack jawed, backwoods yinzers that only care about football and being ignorant. I lived there for awhile, and considered it West Virginia with Buildings.

  17. @HAGATHA My apologies.

For this, I agree with you.

Arm ourselves. Learn self-defense. Take no sh*t. Fight back. Fight back. Fight back.

    F*ck passivity. F*ck non-violence. F*ck being nice.

Violence is all they'll understand. We fight back, they'll get the message.

  18. here's an equation for you: What does Bryan Brown + Maggie Gallagher + Rick "creampie" Santorum + Cardinal Ratzinger + Pat Robertson + Michelle Bachman + Antoine Scalia + Uganda + Vladimir Putin + Fred Phelps + Andrew Leo Shirvell + the Columbia SC police (who refused to take part in a gay parade because of religious beliefs) + ad infinitum equal? Two young kids beaten up in Pennsylvania. There is a religious cancer fighting very hard to predominate. Thankfully, there is starting to be healthy religious backlash especially with the recent sermon from the National Cathedral's recent pronouncement of homophobia as a sin. So, not only are the aforementioned sociopaths, they're also major sinners in their own church.

  19. ESA - Florida also has a law against concealed carry in a bar. Given that walking from the bar to the car is one of your more likely scenarios for the need of self defensive weapons, then I would maintain that the restriction on concealed carry in bars is an infringement on your right to keep and bear arms.

The law itself is rather ambiguous and even the Dept. of Ag won't give you a concrete answer to what "primary purpose" means in "primary purpose is to dispense alcohol". Clearly, in a nightclub where 10,000 SF is dedicated to dancing and mingling and only 1000 SF is dedicated to alcohol one could argue that the primary purpose of that establishment is dancing and listening to music, especially if there is a cover charge.

In any event, the beauty of concealed carry is that no one knows you are doing it unless you have a reasonable fear for your life or safety, at which point only the biggest jackass california prosecutor would go after the victim for defending himself (they have in the past) but in civilized states, they generally don't charge victims.

  20. @Brian1: Sorry to disappoint you, but Rick and Jason are not the same troll. (And I suspect I've been reading this site longer than you have.) Sadly, multiple people troll this site.

They are both misogynistic and homophobic, which is why they get lumped together. Rick is anti-effeminate behavior; Jason is anti-woman. Rick posts coherent thoughts that are actually intelligently argued and written, albeit he's still stupider than a box of dead squirrels. He's also vegetarian and anti-gun, wonderfully ironic considering those are both stereotypically unmanly characteristics, something he constantly rants against. Rick will also respond to other commenters and likes to engage in discussion.

Jason, on the other hand, does not respond to comments aimed his way. He's a simpleton whom I suspect is on the autism scale. He posts the same phrases over and over again under a variety of common name handles (Adam, Bob, etc). About 5 years ago, one of his favorite rants was: "End the bisexual double-standard!" He also believes that AIDS is not caused by HIV, but rather by poppers and promiscuous behavior.

Let me know if you also need me to give you the profile on Ratbastard or UFFDA. I haven't paid much attention to David Hearne/Hagatha as he just comes across as a crazed tea-bagger, and those people are hardly interesting.

  24. Bill - Don't be dissin Hyundai. My Mom traded in her Mercedes for a Hyundai about 6 years ago. It's a great car and the warranty is exceptional. Don't believe that "Mercedes goes on forever" crap either. While her Mercedes was a nice car, it was nothing special other than being extremely comfortable to ride in.

  25. @ "Yes, I changed my name to Hagatha because Derricka called me an old hag and I always loved Aunt Hagatha on Bewitched. "

LOL...LOL, you crazy-azz b.tch. You claimed that the reason you started using the posting name "Hagatha" was because you were using two different computers to post.

You should be committed...to a home for the criminally Republican. If you are put there soon you'll be able to suck on senile Ted Cruz.

    @ CRISPY,

Yes, I have the same view that you do on Rick. He's a crazy motha' f.cka' but he uses the English language very well to express his crazy sh.t.

Jason/Adam on the otherhand is not that eloquent in his prose...not as eloquent and evil as Rick.

David Hagatha Hearne is a creation of Rick. But the crazy thing is that Hagatha is a complete persona separate from Rick. She's an old queen who lives in a retirement community in Florida. And she loves guns and racism. It's f.cking spooky what some people do on this blog.
