Rick Santorum Says GOP Approval Of Gay Marriage Will Be 'The Destruction Of Our Republic': VIDEO

In September, former presidential candidate Rick Santorum spoke at the Midwest Republican Leadership Conference about the GOP and social concerns. Of course, same-sex marriage was a popular talking point. Santorum is terrified that his own party may be getting on board.

SantorumRight Wing Watch reports:

Blaming the shift in support for gay marriage on the television program "Will and Grace," Santorum said that Christians are now afraid of speaking out against it for fear of being called bigots and haters. Complaining that the DOMA decision ruled that people who oppose gay marriage do so only because they hate people who are gay, Santorum predicated that churches will eventually lose their tax-exempt status because of it.

"We have hate crimes in this country," Santorum warned, "for hate speech. It's coming."

Saying that "Christians are the most tolerant people in the world," Santorum claimed that Christian opposition to gay marriage is no longer being tolerated and declared that "for the Republican Party to even contemplate going along with this is the destruction of our republic."

  1. What can I say? Santorum makes me laugh every time he opens his mouth. Hardy-dee-har-har-har.

  2. Churches *should* lose their tax exempt status. If they ever deserved it, that time is long past.

  3. SOME Christians are the most tolerant people in the world, but that are, sadly, in the minority. Sorry, Ricky Boy, you are not in that minority. Your pinheaded views are just so much hot air.

  5. Conservatives want our rights to come from God so that they can restrict them to the people most deserving of God's favor: themselves.

They want our rights to come from God so they can overlook the fact that we live in a secular democracy, not a Christian theocracy.

If you have rights, they say, it's because God gave them to you. If you don't have rights, they say, it's because God disfavored you, and He always will, so you'll be permanently out of luck.

    Handy, eh?

  6. It hilarious how Scatty clings to the notion that people actually give a crap about what he has to say.

  7. Will & Grace? I have no idea how that show could have caused the shift toward marriage equality. Perhaps a shift toward letting the great unwashed know that gay people existed, but that's about it.

This guy is still living in the early 90s apparently.

  8. Frothy is still drinking the kool-aid.
Unfortunately your Christianist, Dominionist standup routine is not funny and it is killing people.
Stay home and find reasons to hate yourself Ricky-no one is interested in what you have to say besides your cult of hate based on a fictional character.

  10. He might be right. These extremists , especially Palin and the radio hate speakers are pretty much calling for an armed rebellion or some sort of violent separatist action.

  13. I wish they would start up their long threatened rebellions - it's time to put this down for good.

  14. Frothy has learned nothing.
    Frothy is incapable of learning.
The pre Reformation Christian church and the post Reformation Churches were the most intolerant, repressive, vicious and vindictive institutions right up to the present.

For more up to date examples of the haters of the church just read the Catholic Catechism on gays or just look at the photograph of all the Spanish Bishops outside the Cathedral in Burgos giving the Nazi salute for Franco.

The church is a power crazed institution......Scatorum would fit right in, as a hated and a bigot.

  16. Our government used to have parties.
    Now we have factions.
    It doesn't end well.

  17. Santorum is not the dim-wit you all think he is. He's trying a "the worst the better" strategy here. Look at how he's trying to convince people that churches will lose their tax exempt status. He knows this is the one issue that could really destroy progress on gay rights. I'm telling all of you now that even talking about removing tax exemption for churches is dangerous. I'm certain that right-wing groups monitor all major liberal websites, this one included.

As for Santorum being on the wrong side of history, we can't know what history holds for any of us. Just ask President Rudy Giuliani. Or President Hillary Clinton, who easily trumped that half-black candidate from Hawaii. Didn't we all know that no one with two African names could never be elected President of the US?

  18. No Rick, Your parties inability to focus on anything other than their wingnut agenda, forcibly shutting down the government in the process is what is leading to the destruction of your - YOUR republic...

  19. If we took all the dire predictions from conservatives and stacked them up, they'd reach to Jupiter. People like Little
Ricky were making the exact same prophecies of doom when Clark Gable said "damn" in 1939. Jesus.

  20. Not worth commenting on what this idiot says. Just GO AWAY, (D)ick. Your 15 minutes were up a LONG time ago.

Posted by: Tony Diaz | Oct 18, 2013 10:37:53 AM

  21. Well, Jomicur, given how vulgar and debased our culture has become since that time I'd say that maybe the doomsayers of 1939 were not so off-base, just predicting decline a bit too early. And in all honesty, would "Gone with the Wind" have been less artistic if Gable had said "Frankly, my dear, I just don't care?" And no, I'm not being sarcastic.

Doomsayers are at least thinking of the future, which is what a responsible adult, whether liberal or conservative, should be doing. LGBT people of the future will have their lives shaped in part by decisions we make today.

  25. If churches lose their tax-exempt status it won't be because of their doctrinal beliefs. No, it'll be because of their taking advantage of such status while politicking with the best of 'em. I'm generally in favor of maintaining their tax-exempt status, more to bolster First Amendment guarantees, but am beginning to rethink that based on their own behavior.
