Mayor Annise Parker Says Houston Will Offer Benefits to Gay Partners of City Workers Married Elsewhere

ParkerSome good news out of Houston this morning.

Lone Star Q reports:

Houston Mayor Annise Parker announced Wednesday morning that the city will begin offering benefits to the same-sex partners of city employees if they are legally married in another state. In 2001, Houston voters approved a charter amendment banning domestic partner benefits. However, Parker reportedly believes the amendment is unconstitutional in light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s June decision striking down the Defense of Marriage Act.

Houston will join other cities including Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth and San Antonio in offering DP benefits in Texas.

  1. A big Thank You and shout out to Mayor Annise Parker! I'm really glad to see this as Texas in general is fairly dismal on gay issues and news with the exception of larger towns and cities which have domestic partner benefits in place. "Parker and her life partner Kathy Hubbard have been together for more than 20 years and are advocates for adoption, with two adopted daughters and a son." One by one, we can make a change for the better! Thank You!

  3. This is wonderful news. Should help at least a few dozen couples who are now offered some very important benefits they were being denied.

  4. Thanks Mayor Parker! I along with many others feel like you're doing a great job for the city and too for showing the rest of the country a woman can do a bang-up job in leading the 4th largest city in the country. (And oh yes, this is a woman and oh my goodness she's a lesbian too! mercy me!)

  6. A clear abuse of Mayoral power and another example of the liberal left doing whatever it takes - ignoring the law when the so choose, to extend their agenda. This is illegal under both State and Local law, she has sworn to uphold. But then liberal are untrustworthy at keeping their word. Anise is obviously following the leader of Obummer. I hope the City Council or some Houston citizen will sue the crap out of her.
