In the last three weeks, three more states have joined (or will, soon) the ranks of those with marriage equality: New Jersey, Illinois, and Hawaii.

CNN notes the milestone: "As Hawaii and Illinois join the list of states approving same-sex marriage, the United States crosses a big mark on the issue: More than 1 in 3 Americans will live where same-sex marriage is legal.
It's a dramatic shift in a short period of time -- one not seen on other social issues."

  1. Even better, Not to jump the gun, but also consider that:

(1)Oregon (despite its "no in-state same-sex licenses" constitutional amendment) announced last month that all of its government agencies are to treat out-of-state same-sex marriages the same as opposite sex marriages, and

    (2) that, while we are waiting for the state Supreme Court to rule, it notably has not barred the 8 counties there that were issuing same-sex marriage license from continuing to do so and people continue to marry there

we might reasonably add those states in, which by my count, gets us to over 118 million people, or about 37.8% of the population living in states recognizing equal marriage right now.

  3. To really get the point across, they should also provide a color-coded "cartogram" of the USA showing each state's size proportional to its population. Little Hawai'i would be bigger than Montana and half of Wyoming thrown in, and Illinois would easily cover that huge strip in the middle that includes both Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
