UK Evangelist Condemned for Suggesting That Tom Daley is Gay Because His Father Died

Last week we reported that anti-gay fundie Peter LaBarbera went to Jamaica to foment more hatred against gay people there. Buzzfeed has more on the conference of conservative Christians that LaBarbera attended, which included Andrea Minichiello Williams, a UK evangelist who is making headlines in the UK for her remarks suggesting that British diver Tom Daley is gay because his father died.

Buzzfeed reports: Williams

During her remarks, Andrea Minichiello Williams of the United Kingdom’s Christian Concern said Jamaica had the opportunity to become a world leader by fending off foreign pressure to decriminalize same-sex intercourse.

“Might it be that Jamaica says to the United States of America, says to Europe, ‘Enough! You cannot come in and attack our families. We will not accept aid or promotion tied to an agenda that is against God and destroys our families,’” she said, adding to applause, “If you win here, you will have an impact in the Caribbean and an impact across the globe.”

She made the case that it is a “big lie” that homosexuality is inborn, arguing instead it is caused by environmental factors like “the lack of the father” and “sometimes a level of abuse.” She illustrated her point with the case of 19-year-old British diver Tom Daley and his reported relationship with American screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.

Daley, she said, who is “loved by all the girls and had girlfriends,” had “lost his father to cancer just a few years ago and he’s just come out on YouTube that he’s in a relationship with a man, that man is 39, a leading gay activist in the States.”

The Independent reports:

Yesterday Martin Warner, the Bishop of Chichester, where Mrs Williams was elected to the General Synod in 2011, condemned the comments.

He told the Independent that they had "no sanction in the Church of England" and that they "should be rejected as offensive and unacceptable".

While the gay rights charity Stonewall said it was "sad" that Mrs Williams is "supporting the prosecution of gay people simply for how they were born".

Dr Keith Sharpe, vice chair of Changing Attitudes, an Anglian body calling for full equality for LGB&T people, said that her "bigoted outburst amount to dangerous hatemongering".

He added that "Jamaica is one of the most dangerous places in the world for LGB&T people who suffer homophobic intimidation and violence on a daily basis" and that endorsing its laws on gay sex amounted to supporting the "vilest form of homophobia in a most terrible cultural situation."

  1. When your life consists of hawking superstition and magic to make money off poor people, amazing sht drops out of your word hole. She's a prime example of the inseparable twins: religion and stupidity.

  2. More like - It is a “big lie” that BIGOTRY is inborn, instead it is caused by environmental factors like “the lack of the father” and “sometimes a level of abuse.”

  4. What a great disservice to Christianity is being done by bigots using it as a cover for meting out abuse.

As religious interest continues to wane, the finger will not be pointed at "society" but shall instead be firmly pointed at the true problem coming from within.

  6. OMG, to me, this photo makes Ms. Williams look like the evil incarnate offspring of All-American homophobe Anita Bryant. Now, where's a good meringue covered pie when you need one?

  7. Yeah, good luck with that Jamaica rejecting foreign aid thing, sister. That's just NOT going to happen.

  9. I find it incredible - and it would be humorous if she weren't serious - that a woman who is a leader in a church founded by an adulterer so that he could manufacture a divorce has the gall to complain about the destruction of families. Guess what, Ms. Williams? I not only don't want to destroy the family, I actually also come from a family - mother, father, sibling, nephews. So, with all due respect, screw you.

  12. So we have to condemn Tom Daley for being gay, even though it's not his fault?

I just don't get the logic of these evangelists. They always want to say it's a choice, But then they say that it's the result of a distant dad, strong mother, sexual abuse or drinking strawberry milk, or some such nonsense. So then it isn't a choice, but they should condemn us and discriminate against us all the time for something that they admit isn't our fault. To not "encourage" homosexuality, I guess.

    But it makes no sense.

  13. We're all a bit suspicious about his relationship with Mr. Black, but arm-chair theorizing isn't going to get anyone anywhere and certainly turning Jamaica into a religious backwater is not going to turn it into a "world leader".

  14. It may be that his father's death partly explains his attraction to a much older man. You'd have to be pretty naive to rule this out. What it doesn't explain is why he's gay in the first place.

  16. Sad to see that the evangie-fundie madness has taken root in the UK. Don't dismiss evangelicals, folks. Their influence in the U.S. has diminished somewhat and it remains to be seen just how influential they could become in England. But, they are a rising political and social power in parts of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. It is very telling that this evangelical confab was held in Jamaica which, right now, is the most dangerous place in the Western Hemisphere to be if you are gay. Jamaica has become a veritable cesspool of evangelical christianity.

  17. "Daley, she said, who is “loved by all the girls and had girlfriends,”

Put all the disingenous "Christian" BS aside. It is just designed to cover up people's real motives when it comes to homophobia. In the case of this woman, her real motive is revealed by the statement I quoted above.

Like all women, she is only comfortable with gay men who are no threat to women in any way--in other words, gay men who make no claims to masculinity or having a place in the world of men.......No, they only like efffeminate gay men who pander to them and are subservient to them and keep them entertained and who they know are not going to be accepted in male society in the larger world....AND who are not sexually attractive to them for most of the same reasons.

Young Mr. Daley is a threat to her and other women because he basically CHOSE a relationship with a man over relationships with women, preferring it and proclaiming it to be a better alternative.......and because he did so, being a man who is not only regarded as very attractive by many women and desireable sexually, but who, being a star athlete, is admired and accepted by man men, as well.

    How dare he.

So the hostility from her and other women to come was and is entirely predictable.

Women are not our friends and never will be.

  18. "But, they are a rising political and social power in parts of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean."

Correct. Among the very non-white Third World people who are flooding the US as illegal "immigrants", with the blessing of the liberal establishment, which coddles them at every turn and wants them to become the majority of the US population.

  20. It makes no difference whether homosexuality is "caused" by environmental factors or something inborn. It is what it is regardless.

  21. I don't know which statements are stupider - that tw*nt's assertion that Tom is gay because his father died, or Rick's usual misogynistic trolling.

  22. Good to know that Andrea Minichiello Williams of the United Kingdom’s Christian Concern fully endorses the killing and murder of LGBTs in Jamaica and calls it a model for other nations 'not pressured' by Europe Values.

Yes madam, you look to have blood on your hands.

    Your God sees that.

  24. lol - yes! We should throw her over a cliff and if she doesn't fly away we'll know she wasn't a wicked witch.
    Religious freedoms etc...
