@Sam – Is it? I don’t know enough about these awards, But I do remember “Brokeback Mountain” won the Golden Globe for best motion picture drama, while the Oscars didn’t go there.

  2. Joseph L. says

LOL @Sam. What would a movie about Liberace be without sequins? I mean, the guy actually wore them, it wasn’t like it was just a made-up role for the movie…

  3. sam says

Hollywood is homophobic. Not only are gay and bisexual men almost completely absent from the movies, male homosexuality’s context is either death or show-tunes. Hollywood’s homophobia is enabled by the gay men who work there as well as by homophobic women.

  4. Lucca says

@Sam. While I wouldn’t go so far as to label it homophobic, I do see an issue with the way Hollywood represents gay men and our lives in such a narrow and “marketable” way to the general public.

  5. David From Canada says

Sam is quite correct on many counts. Hollywood IS quite homophobic. I can’t remember the last time I saw a gay character in an American made movie. And gay-themed movies like Behind The Candelabra and The Normal Heart are relegated to television instead of the big screen where they belong. Let’s change all this!!!

As much as Jennifer Lawrence is my new imaginary-BFF, and as much as I *enjoyed* her performance in American Hustle (one of the few things I actually liked about that film, which utterly underwhelmed me) she didnt’ deserve this win. June Squibb and Lupita Nyong’o gave the two best supporting female performances of the year. Hands down.

  7. Zlick says

Yes, so homophobic. Matt Damon won for playing gay just like it was in the day, Michael Douglas won for playing gay just like it was in the day, Jared Leto won for playing trans, and Matthew McConaughey won for playing a phobe who transitions to an AIDS activist and gay-friendly man. Oh yes, the awards given were so very homophobic. WTF?

  8. says

    Matt Damon won?

On another note, ’12 Years a Slave’ is mediocre at best. It’s winning everything because of liberal guilt over slavery, cheating ‘Hustle’, ‘Nebraska’ or ‘Gravity’ of their more deserved recognition.
