Popular Russian Actor Calls on Putin to Criminalize Gay Sex

Okhlobystin

Ivan Okhlobystin, the popular Russian actor, sci fi writer, aspiring politician, and creative director of the phone retailer Euroset, is making headlines again for his remarks about gays.

You may recall that he told a cheering crowd in December that gays should be burned alive in furnaces. Okhlobystin's remarks prompted a coalition of Russian LGBT activists to urge Apple to cut ties with Euroset, where the company recently began selling its phones.

Now Okhlobystin is urging President Vladimir Putin to criminalize sodomy, RIA Novosti reports:

The actor praised Putin for last year’s ban on “gay propaganda,” but said it was not enough because the very existence of a legal gay community amounted to such propaganda.

The Kremlin did not comment as of Wednesday.

Okhlobystin’s post was deleted from TwitLonger blog platform for violation of terms of service, according to the Twitter of the site’s creator Stuart Gibson, who is openly gay.

But the statement caused a stir on the Russian blogosphere, and already earned the 47-year-old actor the label “faggot” from socialite and prominent opposition activist Ksenia Sobchak.

This is not the first instance of gay-bashing from Okhlobystin, who stars in “Interns,” a hit sitcom heavily deriving from US show “Scrubs.”

  2. There will always exist a degenerate subset of humanity who desire nothing more than to legitimize their delusions. When such horrific language is spoken to a cheering crowd, the crowd has been placed there to agree with them.

  3. There is a lot of homosexual in the arts, and I just don't mean the actual content but the performers themselves. It makes you wonder to what level this nutcase's exposure to it has or insecurity perhaps, has made him go off the deep end such as he has. This guy's evilness is literally right up there with Hitler. Thankfully he doesn't have any actual political power.

  10. Just Google him and look at some of his pictures. Oh yeah, he's a closeted self-loathing homosexual for sure!

  11. Yes, Russians are saying Putin & Co. were planning to reinstitute the ban after the Olympics, but Okhlobystin jumped the gun / showed their hand.

  15. Something many don't know, and it's not mentioned in the Russian article, because there it's common knowledge - he twitted that on January 7, Russian Orthodox Christmas.

  17. The hysterical over reaction in the Western media has allowed space for this guy's views and taken away all of the space for people against these views. They are now looking like mouthpieces of the US government, which is a very uncomfortable position for them.

Good job media (including towleroad) for completely bungling everything.

  18. It is amazing that Russia is telling the rest of the world that they are the true and only superpower that defends and holds traditional values, while the US falls further in bed with the depraved. What is frightening is that people are foolish enough to believe it (look at Obama).

  19. Gumby,

But that's the problem - I read Russian news in Russian daily - there aren't that many people who have openly spoken out against it. The cell company Euroset' that Okhlobystin works for did not distance itself from him (I'm not even talking of firing him, they didn't even say that his words are wrong). The TV show did not fire him or distance itself from him either. Neither did anyone of significance (other than one famous news personality) speak out against.

When I type in his name in Russian in Google News, I get at least 5 pages of news of Okhlobystin asking Putin to recriminalize homosexuality. (I stopped at 5, because I can't remember any other single piece of news to be taking so many pages, even in Russian.) That's it. The same piece of news has at least 5 pages of links. Not one of the articles on the same 5 pages talks of anyone speaking against him. Except one that talks of Russian gays asking Apple to stop selling iPhones to Euroset'.

What has happened, there are individuals who are speaking out against him, but most are not famous and they are not even in Russian news. So, don't fault Towleroad for this.

  20. I don't think the above comment is from the real poster TYLER. It might have been Rick.

Rick, you claim you don't drink alcohol, but maybe you ought to think about giving it a try. Start off with wine...red.

  22. Russia superpower? They can't even protect their fihing bot in african waters... Right-wing troll Rick just shows it real face, advocating burning gays alive

  23. NP, BlueDragon, there are good people in Russia too, and those celebrities, who have spoken out against homophobia and recent laws, are obviously against this Okhlobystin, too, even if they haven't spoken out about it. But I haven't seen news yet of them speaking out against it in any organized way (except for that news personality, and she was asked directly, because she worked with this homophobe some time ago on a common project).

  24. Russian White Trash. This person is essentially saying: Let's do to gay people what Hitler did to Jews/Gays/Undesirables during WWII. I am telling you with certainty that Russia is becoming more and more fascist and Putin may be the next Hitler. We must all watch carefully.
