Fake Lesbian Duo t.a.T.u. to Play Opening of Sochi Games: VIDEO

Tatu

The fake lesbian duo t.a.T.u. are set to play at the opening ceremonies of the Sochi games, the WSJ reports:

Details of the opening ceremony are a closely guarded secret. But two people familiar with the matter say Russia’s team will enter the stadium to the music of t.a.T.u, made up of Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova. The group will perform at the warm-up show that won’t be broadcast internationally, the people said. The Russian team will then file into the stadium to the sound of their 2003 hit “Not Gonna Get Us.”

...

The group has a controversial history. The lyrics and video of “All The Things She Said,” the duo’s 2003 hit, were suggestive of homosexuality and bisexuality. “I’m losing my mind. I need her,” the chorus goes.

At the time, t.a.T.u had the public image of two lesbian schoolgirls. One later married a man, while the other had a baby with a male partner then divorced.

  3. "All The Things She Said" is a great song and the video is quite amazing, especially when you consider that it was made in Russia in 2003. Of course Putin wouldn't have a problem with two "fake lesbians" performing. There's nothing most straight men love more than fake lesbians...

  4. Doubt Putin is straight in any sense. It's the Russian double speak. He says on the one hand these homosexuals are fine I have given them awards and on the other se freakish deviants must be removed from society. He read a lot of Orwell growing up.

  6. Because gays are gross... but lesbians are totally hot!

  7. This is interesting since t.A.T.u has been very openly critical of Putin and his policies. Lena lives in LA and Julia lives outside of Russia now too, I believe.

This album defined my teens and "fake" or not it still saved me when nobody was making music about my experiences. I hope the girls find a way to stick it to Putin.

  8. Yes, fake lesbians ARE okay, just like fake gay guys (Heath Ledger). It's called showbiz for a reason, and fake or not, the songs were catchy.

  9. Fake lesbians are not GLBT-friendly.

  10. Remember that these "not LGBT-friendly" (according to Joe) "fake lesbians" are the only Russian pop stars to have attended Moscow Gay Pride (in May 2007)when they joined the protest outside Moscow City Hall.

  11. Are they going to be arrested for gay propaganda?

  12. Dear Andy,
In 2012 at ENGLISH.RAY.RU, Yulia Volkova was quoted as saying, "I still like boys and girls," which means that at least Yulia is not a "fake lesbian. She is either bisexual, pansexual or non-monosexual and, therefore, she is a member of the LGBT.
I thank Nerva for bringing our attention to the fact that both pop stars joined Moscow Gay Pride in 2007.
Maybe you think both stars, regardless of sexual orientation, should have boycotted the Sochi Olympics. Fair enough. But keep in mind that gay Olympian Johnny Weir has said over and over again that he would never boycott Sochi, so being disloyal to a pro-LGBT boycott is not a strictly bisexual choice.
Maybe, like me, you wonder how they could have slipped past the Russian anti-LGBT censors to even be allowed a performance at the opening of the games. One would think their blockbutster 2003 hit would have been enough of a red flag. Maybe you're right about the commercialization of sex between women being the deciding factor--but that is hardly something that the bisexual community supports. In fact, we acknowledge that the hypersexualization of bisexuals, whether cisgender or trans, men, women and genderqueer or intersex, leads to dangerous health outcomes, like higher rates of suicidality than straight or gay counterparts, higher rates of sexual assault for bisexual women than their lesbian or straight counterparts, higher rates of domestic violence for bisexual men, and higher rates for depression, anxiety and self-harm for bisexuals than for lesbian, gay or straight counterparts.
Now, I would have hoped that t.a.T.u would have done something pro-LGBT during their performance at the Olympics, in defiance of Russians anti-queer "propaganda" laws. But I hardly know, since, as a bisexual who cares about what is happening in Russia to all LGBT, I am boycotting the Sochi Olympics. So I haven't seen--have you?

  13. Not fake lesbians. A real bisexual and a real ally. Please stop being biphobic.
