Nate Berkus and Fiancé Jeremiah Brent Appear in New 'Banana Republic' Ad Campaign: PHOTO

Berkus

Nate Berkus and his finacé Jeremiah Brent appear in a new Banana Republic campaign called “The true outfitters of modern American style" featuring real-life couples, the NYT reports:

In one ad, the pair is lounging on the grass, Mr. Berkus’s head on Mr. Brent’s midsection. In another ad, the couple is cuddling. In other ads, the pair appears among photographs of the other couples. In the magazines in which the campaign is now starting to appear, including InStyle and Rolling Stone, Banana Republic is the only clothier to present a same-sex couple amid the ad pages.

The paper adds that it is what younger shoppers want:

“Showcasing true relationships,” as the new campaign does, “can resonate more deeply,” Ms. Sadler said, and the appearance of Mr. Berkus and Mr. Brent reflects “values of diversity and inclusion we’ve shared since our early days” as a company based in San Francisco.

There is another reason for the presence of a same-sex couple: The ads are aimed at younger consumers, many of whom regard inclusion and diversity as intrinsic parts of their world views, and the campaign encourages them to join the ranks of the loyal older customers in Banana Republic stores.

  3. Awesome, and the perfect excuse to buy my husband a new coat!!! Thank BR!

  4. Comments like "Who?" and "Never heard of them" are so pointless. In the time it takes to type something like that, you could have searched Google or even Towleroad and found the answer.

That's certainly not to say that not knowing every aspect of pop culture is crucial knowledge. But if you want to know something, look it up. If you don't, don't. But simply sharing your ignorance of something isn't cute and has no point.

  5. Gorgeous couple! Time to go shopping at BR.

  6. That is a poor picture of Nate Berkus. He's cheerful and buoyant, and this makes him look kinda bitchy.

@MATT27: Google can help keep you from appearing ignorant.

  7. @Paul R, agreed and well said - I'd add that a "Who?" post can walk between ignorance and arrogance.

Even if one doesn't know who the featured couple is, it remains significant that Banana Republic is acknowledging same-sex couples in their advertising! I applaud them.

  8. They're both strikingly handsome gents but that photo is so... gray. The light is dead, the grass color is way off, the guys look stoned, that camera is a pointless prop. Banana Republic can use any good press (word is that they brand is struggling) and working with Berkus and Brent are great talent for their message. However- the photography and styling is weaker by far than the subjects.

  9. Really? The use of these (or any) models would compel someone to shop at one retailer or another?

Agree they look stoned and uncomfortable. Must be what sells.

  10. This is what a true-to-life A&F ad should look like.

  12. I like that Nate looks stoned. I just dropped 400. in the Scottsdale store last week. The perfect work clothes.

  13. So happy for both of them! I. too, miss my fellow Virgo, Nate.

  14. I'm with Robert. Oprah's decorator isn't going to make me go to Banana Republic.

Just more celebrity endorsement deals that make no sense to me, like Michelle Phillips for Louis Vuitton. Really?

It could be any models, from anywhere.

  15. I think the point of whether you.know who they are or not is a ridiculous argument. If you don't you obviously have been on another planet for years..Nate has been in the public eye for years..not only with his inclusion of Oprah Winfrey but a list of other high profile works. Regardless the point is BR is using the idea of gay men and diversity in their advertising..As well whether you like the photography or not..go to the store..check out the clothing in person and potentially be inclined to purchase..as is kinda the whole point..

  16. Nate looked better in a recent Rachel show. His boyfriend looks a bit plastic.

  17. Now if we could get real interracial gay couples, we'd be really doing something awesome!

  18. Jeremiah Brent is up for golddigger of the year award.

But its on hold till he can get Berkus to marry him without a prenup

Show the rest of us bitches how its done Jeremiah!!!

  19. Also just as an aside I've met Berkus and found him to be an incredibly nice and polite guy
Seeing as he lost his last partner in that horrible tsunami its good to see he found true love again.

  20. Banana Republic owned by Gap, Inc. owned by the Fischer Family. Who are they? They're Koch Bros buddies.

Every dollar you spend supporting a company that hires a gay couple to represent them, some portion of that dollar ends up going in the pockets of legislators that actively champion institutionalized discrimination against you.

Don't take the bait. Our civil rights are more important than hip clothes.

PS. They are a cute couple. Too bad they're working for bigots. I'd have hoped for more than that - they're probably getting paid a lot of money - that's pretty much all you need to know about them.
