  1. I'm sorry, that was BAD...and boring

  2. Bad? You clearly don't have an ear for music, for technique, for talent...for anything.

  3. she nailed it - fantastic!

  4. It wasn't Whitney at the Super Bowl in 1991

  6. best since whitney.
strange day for rochester, ny, btw:
    its most famous daughter sings the national anthem at the super bowl;
its most famous son dies of a heroin overdose in his apartment.

  7. Sorry, but YAWN.

  8. I'm a classically-trained musician and thought this performance was quite unremarkable. Yes, it was sang on-pitch and technically well, but it lacked soul and creative interpretation. A hundred other opera singers would have sang it just like this. My ear would have rather heard James Taylor sing. He might not have Fleming's technique, but I would have at least felt his performance.

  9. Gorgeous!

  10. She's a talented technical singer, but there is just no soul or feeling there.

  11. Fabulous.

    To say otherwise is ridiculous.

  12. @TUTWELVE It was not SANG on pitch... it was SUNG on pitch. No one would have SANG it just like this. They would have SUNG it just like this.

  13. That looked live for once.

  14. Clint,
Make sure not to mistake technical ability with musicality. With all of her training and technique, she, more than many people, could have taken this performance to another level....but she did not. She sang it straight and didn't take any creative chances. She did nothing more than what your average professional soprano would have done. That is not the mark of a truly great musician, in my opinion.

  15. Yeah, I was completely unimpressed. There are many better sopranos they could have chosen.

  16. Wasn't Whitney's pre-recorded?

    Posted by: Matenor | Feb 2, 2014 10:24:19 PM

  17. She sang it simply and beautifully, without any "look at me and how wonderful I am" vocal gymnastics/melisma like some other singers from the past. 'Nuff said.

  18. DBACK, she was not singing simply when she sang, "the land of the freee-aaaaah".

  19. Whitney lip synced to a track, this was live. Love me some Whitney, though.

  20. Anyone with even basic operatic training would recognize that this was not a great performance. It was fine and certainly one of the best Super Bowl performances, but Renee Fleming has done enough exemplary work that the bar is quite a bit higher for her. Several have criticized the musicality, but even the technique was at a level below her best. Maybe she was getting over an illness?

  21. Renee sang it live.

  22. Wonderfully majestic! A great and fitting rendition of our National Anthem!

  23. baroque pitch; a half step low.

  24. I wonder if singing in a large open air stadium had an effect on Renee Fleming's performance. She sang well, but it wasn't as impressive as I thought she would do.
