Orthodox Rabbi: 'Bashing Gays Is Not Religion' – VIDEO

Shmuley

On Fox News' The Real Story, host Gretchen Carlson asked her "faith panel" this past Tuesday to weigh in on the Duck Dynasty family's new church curriculum.

One of the panelists, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, took the opportunity to instead address the homophobic comments of the family patriarch Phil Robertson with an astonishingly blunt condemnation. Said the rabbi:

They've done tremendous damage to religion. We have to stop making religion in America about bashing gays. They have to just forswear that stupid comment about comparing homosexuality to bestiality. See, the problem in America is that we overlook all the heterosexual guys who are raping women 1 in 5 on the campus[...]Bashing gays is not religion. What is religion is family dinners and combating the divorce rate.

  5. Boteach has always been consistent on this view of homosexuality which has drawn him ire with fellow Orthodox Rabbi's. His view is definitely not the norm with them and he's seen almost as a heretic with them. He's not necessarily pro-gay, he just thinks religious folk spend too much time focusing on homosexuality. He has moderate views on abortion, contraception and the death penalty too.

Good on him in calling out hate for what it is.

  6. Hate is religion especially the one of the Christian favor. The Catholic Church used to hate Judaism. On the other hand, some Rabbi don't like Christians either. An eleventh century Rabbi had a lot of contempt for the "new" religion. He described Jesus as a bastard son conceived by a menstruating and wanton mother.

  8. Into the lions den! Right after plastic Christofascist harpee delivers her praise for the inclusive Robertson clan that just wants to take as many people to heaven as possible don'tcha know Rabbi Boteach dives in with a dose of reality and a smackdown. So unexpected on Fox.
    Thank you Rabbbi Boteach!

One of my favorite sermons on religion/homosexuality/humanity.

  10. Just love the rude harpies rushing in to cut Rabbi Boteach off...guess that's what happens when ya go off-script on Fox, can't have bad str8ies and religion in the same paragraph.

  13. @Francis : The homophobic rabbis need Rabbi Shmuley Boteach so they'll have a synagogue they don't go to.

(Some one who is Jewish told me a joke about a Jewish guy who was stranded on an island, where he lived several years before being rescued. They found out that he had built two synagogues. When asked why he built two, he pointed to one and said it was the one he didn't go to.)

  14. I'm shocked that he offered this sensible point of view. He usually treats the panel's Atheist like she's some sort of criminal.

  16. Glad to see Shumley doing something like this -- he often gets lost in self promotion.
I hope he gets gigs on all the talk shows, to express this point of view.

  17. Amazing, the speed of the attack to Shut Him Down, instantly all of them turned and let their voices rip to silence his words. Well said Rabbi, and more often should these same words be spoken.

  18. Judaism – even the Orthodox variety that this Rabbi represents – does not condone inflammatory utterances of any kind. While no Orthodox shul would allow a same sex marriage to take place on their premises or under their auspices; that does not justify hate speech.

Meanwhile, it’s also noteworthy that all major Jewish denominations other than Orthodox ordain LGBT rabbis and cantors and perform same gender marriages where it is legal to do so.
