Russian Embassy Compares Vigilante Attacks on Gays to Bullying of Gingers in the UK

Hunted

In a statement released Tuesday, the Russian embassy in London criticized reports of vigilante attacks on gays in Russia, saying the same could be said of attacks on redheads in the UK. The statement specifically singled out Channel 4's new documentary Hunted, saying it “smacks of well-timed and cynical propaganda.” The Independent reports:

[The statement] went on to suggest that if the producers had sufficient evidence of prevalent gay hate crimes in Russia, they would not have waited until an international sporting event takes place to "raise the alarm". […]

"Channel 4’s documentary is not intended to help “suffering” gays in Russia", it said. “The documentary’s emotional appeal is misleading, since the film falls far short of the standards of professional journalistic investigation.

“One could have easily whipped up such 'documentary' about a hunting season on redheads in the UK saying that 'ginger' people face unmotivated verbal and physical abuse on a daily basis."

  1. Reminds me of M.I.A.'s "Born Free" video.

But seriously, this is such a bizarre equivalence constructed from seemingly thin air it's surreal.

  3. WOW! It seems that the entire Propaganda Ministry is smoking crack at the same time.

This fools no one in the west. (Although it may give some pricks in Uganda cover)

  5. Imagine having thrown off the yoke of religion and still being controlled by this kind of false consciousness.

There can be no doubt that modern day Russian is a regressive, backwater dominated by fascist-style regime.

How sad for the Russian people.

My heart goes out to all the individual sons and daughters who are both loved and gay and must live in Russia. I'm surprised there aren't more asylum seekers, but I guess people can't get out of there and in somewhere else.

  7. The Russian officials are in a defensive mode about the shameful treatment of LGBT people in Russia. That's a good thing. His analogy failed to mention that the government of the U.K. hasn't passed anti-ginger laws that encourage anti-ginger attacks.

  8. It's true those horrible anglo laws against red heads. I don't want my children to ever be exposed to the idea that red heads are somehow okay. It's exactly the same.

  9. When the UK feels the need to pass laws about Ginger Propaganda aimed at kids, then we'll start comparing the two countries.

  10. I see that all the Politburo writers were rehired. Good to know no one lost their jobs there.

  11. Smacks of nothing but political patter from people who have no idea what we are going through and are comfortable looking down on us lowly peasants from their cushy thrones as we are harassed, beaten and killed. Why are these people in positions of power and influence? Why do we accept this? We need to fight back and tell them they have absolutely no idea what they're talking about and we will not stand idly by while we are abused. Is this some kind of sick game of who suffers most deserves help? Unacceptable.

  12. It reminds me of the Russian joke, "There's no news in The Truth and no truth in The News." (The names of the Russian newspapers Izvestia and Pravda literally mean "News" and "Truth" respectively, with Izvestia previously being the publication for the Soviet government and Pravda being the one for the Communist Party.)

  13. Under thatcher we had 'section 28', similar to a propaganda law limiting promotion of homosexuality. But nowhere & not since nazis have I witnessed such provocative torture & ridicule of individuals for the tittilation of women & men who lure people to a beating or worse.
Those involved seem to laugh to justify their actions, will they realise that they will be identified & they will be dealt with.

  15. The lack of a direct action responce a-la ActUp is remarkable. Is Stoli & a one time protest at the Metropolitan Opera all there will be?

    Keep it up.

  18. Except, you Red moron, that the law in Britain doesn't look the other way nor does the government or State Church give tacit approval to attacks on redheads or anyone else... including illegal aliens and terrorist elements.

  19. They truly are clueless. I hate to think of this as some kind of issue with Russian intellect or inability to critically think and analyze situations. But statements like these and the entire propaganda law really calls the intelligence of the Russian people into question.

  23. Yeah, in Britain they put people in jail who say that it is ok to be redheaded, and that redheads should be treated with dignity and respect. And they promote officials who say that hearts of readheads should be burnt alive.

  24. "So angry my fingers are about to go through the keys. How freaking dare they."

@Tristram: Save your anger for something Russian to vandalize. If you live in Alaska, find some Russian churches and vandalize them.

  25. "Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you send him to the cemetery." Malcolm X
This will not stop until we fight back. If that means traveling in groups if that means arming ourselves then so be it. If one of these thugs did this to me I would put him in the ground period.
