French Bus Driver Douses Lesbian Couple With Water For Kissing

FranceA bus driver in northern France got fired after he doused two teenage girls with a bottle of water for kissing before one of the girls boarded. The girl rode to her destination and then confronted the driver who told her that he was "against homosexuality."

The girl then reported the driver to the local transport service, and — after he admitted what he had done — they laid off the driver and then fired him, adding via Twitter: "The act cannot be tolerated and that's why the driver involved was immediately laid off as a protective measure."

Several incidents of anti-gay violence have occurred in France since passing its marriage equality law last year.

Buses in particular seem to be a popular place for blue-collar bigots to express their anti-gay views. Last year in America, a Portland  driver told a gay couple to go to the back of the bus after he spotted them holding hands. And a Chicago bus driver ejected a gay couple from the bus after witnessing them kissing and holding hands.

  1. Very happy to see the French do the right thing and fire the guy. And that's the price that should be paid - along with jail time - for harming anyone when working as a public employee. Nail his not-so-sorry a** to the wall. Expose him. Make sure everyone knows what he looks like and who he is.

  2. Don't you think that "blue collar bigots" is a sort of loaded phrase? How can you be against bigotry and then write something so dismissive of the lower class? I thought it was a little irritating. Can't they just be prejudiced like everybody else?

  3. GGGB, because it's ironically and they are especially the greatest anti-gay group of western society, despite the fact they complain all the time about their persecution as 'poor white working class men'.

  5. Teenage girls though? Really? Wow, bigots are something else.

  6. There are ALWAYS a few bad apples in every bunch. This is NOT representative of all bus drivers; I hope readers here don't take that stance. I am a bus operator in Los Angeles--and a gay man--and I would NEVER treat ANYONE so inhumanely. After all, driving a bus counts just as much as customer service the same as being behind the counter at a fast food place, or being a flight attendant. These few have forgotten that lesson--and the exhaustive customer service training they (and all bus operators) receive. I hope to see positive stories about front-line employees in the near future, but I'm not holding my breath.

  7. There are lots of blue collar gay and gay-friendly people. I think it sends out the wrong message to somehow equate blue collar working class people as right wing homophobic bigoted. There are plenty of white collar executive homophobes after all: Dan Cathy and the Barilla pasta guy, anyone?

  8. Perhaps if they weren't trying to get a reaction out of people they would have been left alone. You reap what you sow, attention seekers. Tolerance does not require putting up with outrageous and gratuitous displays of affection performed solely to rile up your peers.

  10. @Sam/Andrew/Etc: Clearly you've never left your cave and been to France and seen how average French heterosexuals behave.

  11. Sa: Shut up, stupid. The girls weren't even in the bus when they kissed

  12. we all deserve to kiss where we want when we want anytime we want to.

  13. No, for the time being he has not been "fired" but only "suspended" - meaning that he stays home during an investigation into the matter and keeps being paid - and since public transportation unions are very strong in France I expect him to get his job back once the dust has settled.
