Gay Michigan Couple Celebrating 50th Anniversary on Day of Marriage Ruling Hopes to Marry
MLive posted a touching story about Ed Ladner and Milt Lennox, a gay couple from Grand Rapids, Michigan who heard about the marriage equality ruling as guests were filing in to a banquet hall for their 50th anniversary celebration.
"If we can make it on Monday, we might make it in there," Ladner said of applying for a marriage license. "Maybe this party will last until time to go to the courthouse and get one of those licenses."
Ladner and Lennox for four decades owned the Apartment Lounge in Grand Rapids - which is claimed to be Michigan's oldest continually operating gay and lesbian friendly bar - until selling it in 2012. The Grand Rapids couple sought to be pioneers in the local gay community and encouraged gay and straight people to intermingle at their establishments.
Ladner said he doesn't think the area is ready to see two men or two women holding hands on the street, but it's just a matter of time before more progress is made.
"It will be happening because we're no different than any other couple or person out to build a life," he said, choking up.
