Montecore, the White Tiger that Attacked Roy Horn of ‘Siegfried and Roy’ in 2003, Dies

SiegroyMontecore, the 380-pound white tiger responsible for a near-fatal injury to Roy Horn of Siegfried & Roy in 2003, has died, Las Vegas Review-Journal reports:

The white tiger was 17 and died “after a short illness,” according to a press release. Zoologists say 17 is within the lower-end parameter of a normal life expectancy for a tiger.

Horn, who was left partially paralyzed from the 2003 incident and forced to end his stage career, released a statement yesterday on the tiger’s passing.

“The world has lost one of its most majestic creatures and I have lost a brother. I will forever believe it was his concern for my safety and well-being that caused him to act as he did on that night long ago. We spent many hours together and he never failed to bring me great joy and wonderment. It was my great honor to be beside him at the end. He is now playing with his siblings in White Tiger heaven.”

  1. "white tiger heaven"? seriously. when are human beings going to grow up and give up these primitive archaic beliefs?

  7. Is no one impressed by the wisdom and compassion in this statement? Towleroad commentary has really been relegated to bottom feeders.

  8. Despite being fairly docile for big cats, tigers don't really make good pets.

  9. Instead of your "well-being", Mr. Horn, I'm afraid he wished to devour you.

  12. His comment is far from wise, though it is compassionate. It's hardly an honor to be next to a beloved pet (or person) when they die or have to be put to death. Even if such a creature has experienced enormous suffering, death remains a painful end to even the most wonderful life. It can bring relief to the living and the dead, but it's still awful.

@Shannon: your all-caps comment indicates that you're prone to being wrong about various things, so just to be clear: albinism is causes by a complete lack of pigmentation. Albino animals are totally white and have pink eyes, so an albino tiger would not have the stripes and blue eyes of white tigers. White tigers are leucistic (look it up).
