Robosexual Singer Janelle Monáe Covers David Bowie's 'Heroes': LISTEN

Monáe_bowie

Singer and self-avowed robosexual Janelle Monáe recently covered "closet heterosexual" David Bowie's song "Heroes" as part of a Pepsi promotion.

Previously Monáe released parts 2 and 3 of her Metropolis suite (a series of albums in which a robot Cindi Mayweather gets hunted for disassembly after illegally falling in love with a human) and also released a video for "Q.U.E.E.N." with Erykah Badu depicting "a living museum where legendary rebels throughout history have been frozen in suspended animation."

  1. colour me impressed! I'm a worshipper of all Bowie has done and ever will do, and this is really a lovely Monae-twist on one of his classics! well met, honey! LOVING.

  2. Probably Bowie's most endearingly dramatic studio vocal performance, ever. I was surprised at how well King Crimson pulled it off once ... that was probably because Belew sang it with more passion than Bowie ever has done in concert. But this version, yikes ... it's passably "nice," which is all sorts of wrong. This cover has nothing of the zeitgeist that made the original so inspirational, and brings nothing new to the table, just laid-back over-produced blah. Bowie's 1977 version was perfect. Nobody will ever be able to top it or reinterpret it convincingly. Why not take one of his lesser songs and breath fresh life into it? That would be more interesting.

  3. I also adore Bowie's Heroes (esp. the German version). This one's pretty great too.

  4. Bowie rocks. Always has, always will. Had a HUGE impact on me and my life as well as taste in music. No one comes near him for talent or voice.

  5. There are plenty of good covers of Bowie songs (check out http://www.rollingstone.com/music/videos/10-stellar-david-bowie-covers-20130515 for a few), but sorry to say, this ain't one.

  6. Utterly forgettable, like TV theme music.
