Ugandan HIV/AIDS Organization Raided for 'Training Youths in Homosexuality'

Muwrp

Ugandan police have raided the offices of the Makerere University Walter Reed Project building in Kampala for, according to a governement spokesman, "training youths in homosexuality," the AP reports.

Frank Mugisha, a gay leader in Uganda, said one person was arrested in Thursday's raid. He said the project --a nonprofit partnership between a Ugandan university and the U.S. Military HIV Research Program -- was known to offer services to gays who felt comfortable going there for anti-retroviral treatment.

Police spokesman Patrick Onyango denied the raid, saying a man pretending to represent the police threatened workers at the project, which has since been closed by administrators.

The raid was confirmed by an LGBT activist on the ground in Uganda.

  1. So someone pretending to be a cop threatens employees, and the reaction by the administrators is to shut down the location?

Now I see where the Mississippi law is rooted.

The more enlighten this world becomes, the more f**cked up it gets.

  2. And Scott Lively just spooged his pants.

I hope Pres. Obama gets more aggressive in condemning Uganda.

  3. The US shouldn't be offering any aid to Uganda. The problem started because we funded AIDS programs in Africa, which attracted evangelicals like Scott Lively to get some free money.

  4. As predicted by everyone Scott Lively has unleashed the Hound of Bigotry.
Aid in support of HIV treatments is now being used as bait to catch gays.
    All aid must stop.

  5. The African experiment with independence has been a total failure (and not just for LGBT people...)

It is tragic, but is the easily foreseeable consequence of religion. When a whole continent is conditioned to respect dogma over evidence, of course you get kids being slaughtered as witches, girls and boys being genitally mutilated, schools under violent attack, and whole classes of people driven into hiding.

On Thursday, April 3, 2014, a Ugandan citizen employed at the Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) was taken into custody by police at the project’s offices in Kampala. The individual was released without charge the same day. We are working with police to understand the circumstances under which this person was detained. Until we have greater clarity as to the legal basis for the police action, the operations of the program are temporarily suspended to ensure the safety of staff and the integrity of the program. We are working directly with the patients of MUWRP to ensure there is no interruption in their care. Press inquiries should be directed to the U.S. Mission to Uganda’s Public Affairs sections.
