FIFA Decides Anti-Gay Slurs are Okay, Drops Case Against Mexican Fans

MEXICO COACH DEFENDS USE OF ANTI-GAY SLUR BY WORLD CUP FANS

Yesterday we reported that Mexico was under investigation by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) after fans chanted the abusive term “puto” during Mexico’s win over Cameroon on June 13. "Puto" is the Spanish word for a male prostitute, "fag" or "coward", and a derogatory term for gay men.

However, FIFA has decided to take no action against the Mexican football federation as the chant “is not considered insulting in this specific context.”

FIFA has now dismissed the charge as “improper conduct.”

LunaSpeaking to MVS Radio, Mexican actor and producer Diego Luna said that he heard the homophobic chant at the World Cup in Germany in 2006. Luna went on to say "soccer is a reflection of what we are in many ways. We live in a classist, racist, homophobic society into which we are very assimilated, that's all. I'm not really proud about that."

Although FIFA President Sepp Blatter and Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff had pledged to use the World Cup as a platform against racism and discrimination, FIFA has awarded the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 event to Qatar, despite human rights abuses in those countries and Russia’s 2013 decision to pass anti-gay laws.

  1. FIFA is a corrupt organisation so of course no action will be taken.

  2. I guess it would require a massive corporate boycott.

  9. "Puto" has many meanings in many contexts. In the heat of a major sporting event, it's going to be tossed about. Methinks too much knee-jerking going on here and much ado about nothing.

  10. Guess they wouldn't mind, then if we call them "WET-BACKS"!

  11. And proof of the neanderthal mind-set in international soccer. They can have FIFA and they can shove their bigotry up Mexican's arses.

  12. When I hear puto, I don't think fag. There are many uses for the word in Mexico. This seems like a nothing burger. Go Mexico!

  13. I'd say puto is closer to fag than faggot. Possibly even closer to wuss. It's a somewhat problematic term, but it's not at all on the level of chanting "faggot faggot" would be in English.

  14. Considering all the people here, including some Mexicans, who can't agree on what the word means, I'm guessing the Cameroonians they were chanting it at had no idea.

  15. MaryM and Sepp Bladder must be the same person. 1) Because MaryM is a troll who is calling out other trolls, trying to pass "herself" off as a non-troll. And 2) because she somehow predicted that Sepp Bladder would make a racist comment. So clearly Rick, posting under both names, posted the wrong comment first.

  16. I (and the friends I asked) always thought that the word meant b1tch/sl*t/coward/p*ssy. It never crossed my mind that it was another word for f@g.

  17. No surprise. FIFA is one of the most corrupt organizations on this planet. Right behind the Catholic Church and NOM.

  18. Wonder how they'd feel if we all started chanting SP*C!!!!

  19. Most mexicans are inherently homophobic. Even gay mexicans you meet will go out of their way to excuse or ouright defend homophobia in their culture.

  20. Now heaven forbid we say something about Mexicans and Mexican culture. Same LGBT defending the ugly use of 'puto' would be out screaming how racist everyone is.

  21. I'm Mexican and yes the word DOES mean gay. People are trying to say its ok to defend using it. An it shouldnt be used. It's so shameful for my country and because its happening a lot of violent crimes against gay peoples in Mexico right now. Its not okay! Stop allowing prejudice toward gays to happen in latino america

  22. FIFA - bad for Brazil, bad for soccer/football, and bad for humanity.

The USA and Canada aren't that into foreign sports anyway, so why bother with FIFA? MLS can get it done, without the bigotry and nationalism.

  23. Diego Luna hit the nail on the head, Mexican society is so assimilated into the classism, racism, misogyny, homophobia that a lot of poor Mexicans, indigenous Mexicans, women, and gays and lesbians are vulnerable to that most in fact attribute to those problems actively or by being ignoring it. That's why there are so many gay and lesbian Mexicans blowing up the comments in a lot of sites trying to defend the use of the word "puto" and saying it's not a homophobic slur when it's THE most acceptable homophobic slur to use in public either to insult someone who's gay or to insinuate the person is gay since the other anti-gay slurs have become more taboo nowadays. It does carry other meanings like literally "male prostitute or man-whore" but the use in the streets is mostly homophobic in context.

  24. If anyone has some reservations of what they should feel about it, just watch George Lopez' way of using it in his stand-up comedy shows. Just because it doesn't translate literally into the English equivalent it doesn't mean the context isn't mostly the same.
