Nancy Pelosi Urges San Francisco Archbishop Against Joining NOM’s Anti-gay Marriage March

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is joining the growing list of California officials urging San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone to reconsider his participation in NOM’s upcoming ‘March for Marriage’ in Washington D.C. – a rally Pelosi called “venom masquerading as virtue.”

CordileoneThe San Francisco Chronicle reports:

"We share our love of the Catholic faith and our city of San Francisco," Pelosi wrote to Cordileone, who, as head of the 560,000-member Archdiocese of San Francisco, has become the Catholic bishops' point man against gay marriage. She urged him to abandon an event in which some of the participants show "disdain and hate towards LGBT persons."

Invoking the words of Pope Francis with regard to gays and lesbians, she wrote, "If someone is gay and is searching for the Lord and has good will, then who am I to judge him?"

Cordileone, one of the featured speakers at the march, was a leader in the 2008 campaign for Proposition 8 and is a longtime critic of marriage equality, claiming,"The ultimate attack of the evil one is the attack on marriage."

An online petition asking Cordileone not to participate in the hate rally has already gathered over 27,000 signatures.

NOM's March for Marriage is this Thursday.

  1. A perfect opportunity for the Archbishop to come out of the velvet closet.

  2. Since Cordileone is the godfather to one of Brian Brown's children and probably sleeping with him Nancy is wasting her time trying to convince him to be the actual Archbishop of San Francisco instead of being Brian Brown's/NOM's B-boy!

  3. He should go. That's the position of the Church. Don't hide the hate.

  4. Is that Archbishop drunky? has he got his drivers license back yet?

  5. Mike:
That's right. Let him go. It will destroy whatever is left of the reputation of his church by associating himself with a bunch of losers.

  6. Yes, the man has been caught drunk driving. Never trust a man in a pink hat and tacky jewelry.

  7. So, where's Pope "who am I to judge them?" Frank on this fool? Doesn't he have some control over the personal hate of this alcoholic fool and who he politically associates with? Doesn't Frank have the Church's public face to look after?

  8. Nice gesture on Nancy's part...but what a waste of time on the catholic church. I would rather she took a good healthy dump.

  9. If the Pope doesn't remove this hateful drunk bigot from the city of San Francisco, then can we please stop talking about the new Pope being some sort of friend to the gay community? Actions speak louder than words.

His big ego will not be able to resist it. After he is back the people of San Francisco need to finally get mad enough to demonstrate, picket, and force him out of office.

It is ridiculous to think that the pope will remove him.
We need to shame him so badly that he can't govern the archdiocese, because he can't show his face in public.

  12. Again, the implied political pressure on participants in a political march is inappropriate. Is she using her position to threaten some sort of retaliation if he were to march in the parade? You can't get into these sorts of discussions in a democracy.

  13. @Anon: Free discussions are the American way. Where do you see a threat of retaliation in Pelosi's statement? How would that even work? She has the same right to free speech that he has when he speaks out against our civil rights. She's urging him not to participate in a march (though he's still free to do so); he works year after year to deprive us of civil rights. Perspective.
