NYET To Russia's World Cup!

BY DAVID MIXNER

PutinBefore the Russian Olympics at Sochi, the international LGBT community attempted to warn the world of the brutality of President Putin and his punks. While human rights activists successfully made visible Putin's homophobia and hate-filled attitude towards his own LGBT citizens, the world refused to take any action against him. Corporate sponsors of the Olympics publicly expressed dismay while taking no action that would offend the Russian leader. It was tragic to watch the inaction of the world in the face of sheer hatred directed toward LGBT Russians.

Maybe now, after Malaysian Air Flight 17 and the arming of Russian separatists in the Ukraine, the world wished it had paid more attention to the warning given before Sochi. Russian forces are not only arming and inciting the Russian separatists they are actively bombing Ukrainian territory.

The litany of outrageous and unbelievable statements from Putin after the murder of the passengers on MH17 defies all decency. The callous exploitation of the victims, the grave robbers, and the failure of the Russian leader to condemn this mass murder should show the world all they need to know about Putin and his punks. The failure of decent citizens to visibly and strongly act in the face of this mass murder will only guarantee that the situation worsens down the road.

The time has come for the international community to stand up to Putin in every way possible. The European Union must step forward and stop choosing economic benefits over the bodies of those dying in the air and on the ground because of Putin's decisions. Failure of the Europeans to take a powerful stand will just lead to more instability and wide spread war and death.

2018There is an easy and powerful way to quickly show the world's disgust to the Russian policies.

The international community must insist that FIFA remove the World Cup games from Russia in three years. Corporations must abandon their sponsorship if FIFA refuses. Media giants must refuse to cover any Russian World Cup.

Can you imagine Russian troops fighting during the World Cup? How about LGBT Russians being beaten and terrorized by Putin's punks?

Corporate sponsors might have gotten off easy in Sochi but there is no question that they will be held accountable now. After MH17, there should be no more free ride for those who want to make money off such a despicable regime.

Now is the time to act. There is plenty of time to move the World Cup to a place of sanity. London has plenty of infrastructure left from its Olympic Games and could handle such a move. In fact, there are a number of places where the World Cup could be safely and capably hosted.

It is time to join together and loudly proclaim "nyet" to any Russian World Cup.

  1. NOW you want to stop Russia, boycott Russia, move the games but you wouldn't do it for the Olympics because our poor hard-working athletes would be robbed of the chance to participate? It is too late. Russia will never let the World Games out of their grasp and you will accept it because your poor hard-working athletes would be robbed of the chance to play in the World Games.

  2. I fully agree with this essay.

  3. A strong statement by David Mixner, linking Russia's homophobia to its international thuggery -- should be a rallying cry.

  4. And take it where? No fan of Russia here but what country is pure as the driven snow?

  5. @Mike: First of all, you don't need a country to be pure as the driven snow, you just need them to not be taking cues from Hitler. Second, there is literally a suggestion of where to take the games right in the post. Read then comment; that's how this works.

  6. Please. This is such a naive rant post.

It's a pretty much blatant fact that FIFA is one of the most corrupt organizations in the world of sport. The level of bribery which goes on between countries/FIFA is legendary.

Putin doesn't give a hoot about the gay community and what it, or for that matter the world thinks about Russias homophobia. Certainly, many European economies are directly/indirectly linked to Russia as well, so while they may be somewhat vocal - there will never be a huge outcry.

To think that FIFA can be shaken down is unrealistic. And to think that FIFA will dare cancel the Russian games is also naive.

  7. "Punks" is a really poor word choice here to describe the people allied with Putin.

For one thing, 'punk' is a sexual pejorative in the African-American community--stronger than 'sissy' but not quite 'fag'. Using sexual epithets to insult someone should be above an LGBT elder like Mr.Mixner.

More importantly, however, it trivializes the level of brutality and corruption perpetrated by Putin's political allies. We're not talking about ring-and-runs, or house wrapping, or graffiti. We are talking brutal political beatings, imprisonments, murders, taking of children, confiscation of assets and systematic denial of civil and human rights. These are not the acts of 'punks', but rather violent acts of social oppression and borderline acts of war.

Putin and his minion-allies are criminals today, who left unchecked will be dictators and tyrants tomorrow. Let's be clear about the type of political leader we're dealing with today, and avoid tears of war tomorrow.

  8. Okay with all of this. Unfortunately, the only thing MORE corrupt than the IOC is Blatter's FIFA. Unless and until the money dries up, FIFA won't change.

  11. If Putin continues on his path, there may not be any FIFA games in 4 yr.s. As for moving them now, Brazil would seem a good choice. Would Putin care, I doubt it.

  12. FIFA has already addressed this:

"History has shown so far that boycotting sport events or a policy of isolation or confrontation are not the most effective ways to solve problems," FIFA said, adding that global attention on the World Cup "can be a powerful catalyst for constructive dialogue between people and governments."

One of the executive committee members of FIFA is the Russian Sports Minister, so don't count on them changing their minds.

There's a far greater chance of FIFA moving the 2022 World Cup, which is presently planned for Qatar.

  13. While everyone else is discussing semantics and other nonsense, is there a petition that could be signed to start the ball rolling? It is not too late to put pressure on FIFA and all projected participants and corporate sponsors. There are any number of countries with the sports infrastructure to handle the World Cup. The U.S.A. comes to mind. Germany. England. France. Italy. Any number of countries can take up where Russia gets left off. But, let's organize. Let's get a petition going.

  14. The EU and US have already placed the strongest sanctions since the Cold War on Russia. It is quite easy to imagine that if things do not change drastically there would be no EU countries willing to send teams to Russia. What kind of World Cup would that be?

  15. If no action was taken for LGBTs in Russia, I don't see why any action should be taken by LGBTs on account of Malaysian Air Flight 17 and the arming of Russian separatists in the Ukraine.

The world turned their backs on LGBTs; gays were f***ed then and they're f***ed now. Why should we expend ANY energy on account of people who didn't and don't give a damn about us now?

I'm going to care about Russian terrorist acts as much as the world cared when vigilantes were sport-hunting, torturing, mutilating, and murdering gays all the while lying and telling the world their victims were pedophiles.

I my tit-for-tat should look like this "What flight? I didn't hear about it. What about Russia and Ukraine? Ukraine's feeling are hurt about something? Oh well."

Think I'm going to discuss this with people or boycott or do ANYTHING?! Think again Mojambo.

  16. Anyone who has paid close attention to international coverage of the MH17 disaster should understand that the aftermath was handled as well as could be expected in a war zone. The remains of victims were gathered and shipped out of the rebel-controlled area as soon as it was safe to do so, and allegations of theft and tampering turned out to be mostly unfounded, with the black boxes turned over to Malaysian investigators and removal of the wreckage delayed only by the ongoing Ukranian offensive. Putin's comments that Ukraine must bear responsibility for the disaster were echoed by Malaysian transport minister Liow Tiong Lai this week. Had opposition leaders in Kiev respected the agreement of February 21, or negotiated with eastern separatists after the revolution, civil war could have been averted. Instead, the Kiev government went to war against its erstwhile citizens. Russia's decision to arm the separatists is consistent with international norms. Consider any civil conflict in the world today, including the civil war in Ukraine, and you'll find that at least one side is backed by foreign powers, most often NATO countries and their Arab allies. I'm setting the bar quite low, but we residents of NATO countries should know by now not to expect any better of our own governments than we're seeing in Ukraine.

Russia's domestic policies are unquestionably nasty, and an Olympic boycott and arms embargo should have happened. They haven't been because there was money to be made from the Olympics, from trading in Russian oil and gas, and from the sale of French Mistral-class warships to Russia. Moving the World Cup isn't the same as boycotting the Olympics. The 2014 Sochi Olympic Games were unusual because they were the first games since the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games to be held in a country with criminal laws targeting homosexuals and will remain the only such example for the foreseeable future. In contrast, the 2022 FIFA world cup has already been awarded to Qatar, which has been using unfree labour on World Cup construction sites with deadly consequences. Other FIFA tournaments are scheduled for the UAE in 2009, 2010 and 2015, Nigeria in 2009, Morocco in 2013, and India in 2017, all of which currently criminalise homosexuality. Moving the Russian World Cup would be an empty gesture. If athletic associations want to get serious about LGBT rights abroad, their only option is a sporting boycott against all countries that criminalise homosexuality and so-called homosexual propaganda. As crispy pointed out, most people who play sports internationally don't think that's appropriate.

  17. I have not been to Russia, but with gay bashings which are happening in Russia, media version can’t be trusted. Though what the Russian men did was assault and battery, the media gave 1/2 truths by saying the Russian men (calling them neo-Nazis with no proof) bashed gays and put the images on Internet, but here’s what most media omitted though some have now raised it. The Russian men who were bashing gays had pretended to be 15 year old boys on Internet by going on gay websites. Gays looking for teenage boys on Internet replied and set up places to meet them, but instead the gays got bashed by men pretending to be 15 year old boys. Yes, what the Russian men did is vigilanteism for which they should do jail time because right thing to do is to report this to cops and let the cops arrest the gays for soliciting minors and then hopefully the legal system will convict the gays and send them to prison.

But these gays who were bashed did commit a crime by looking for teenage boys on Internet and instead got bashed by men who pretended to be the teenage boys, so I have no sympathy for the gays bashed here. If a man were looking for teenage girls on Internet but instead got bashed by a mob, many would say the man was a disgusting pig looking for underage girls. Gays often harass teenage boys. Those gay bashing victims deserve no sympathy because there is something wrong with an adult looking for teenagers. The gay bashers put the images on Internet after they bashed the gays with slogan ‘occupy pedophilia’ because they aren’t going to tolerate gays harassing teenage boys.

  19. GARY: it looks like you're either a Putin troll yourself or one of those silly Westerners who buys what they're selling.

"Moving the Russian World Cup would be an empty gesture" -- not at all. Putin was already crushed by the poor attendance at his games in Sochi, even if there was no boycott. Practically no world leaders attended, and we sent some LGBT delegates. Stadums were half full, after the gazillion dollars spent on the games.

It is clear that the Russians are now shelling Ukraine across the border, yet likely the Ukrainians will prevail in their own country against a handful of separatists and some Russian "volunteers."

Funinsnow: You have not been to Russia and you have no idea what you're talking about. The gaybashings were real and they targeted gay teens, among others. Even some foreigners.

Moving the World Cup would be a good step and a clear blow to Putin's prestige -- if he has any by 2018 or if he's even still around by then.

  21. When I read about a gay (transexuals are mutilated gays/lesbians and they should abolish sex change mutilations) case in the news, I wonder what the view is of the journalist reporting this on homosexuality/lesbianism. I also wonder if the journalist is a homosexual or lesbian and if so, are they setting aside their bias and reporting the news with no problems. I do not trust news that I get from Daily Kos or the Huffington Post on their coverage of gay bashing cases because they predictably make the homosexual look like an innocent victim whether or not that is the case.

Eg. in 2007, former MSNBC host Tucker Swanson McNear Carlson (Tucker Carlson) was condemned by lesbian columnist Pamela F. Spaulding, Huffington Post & Daily Kos after Tucker Carlson talked of how as a teenager he had bashed a gay who was harassing him in a public restroom for sex. Though the homosexual committed criminal indecent exposure (public restroom is the place to use toilet and wash up not a place for sex) by harassing Tucker Carlson and though Tucker Swanson McNear Carlson defended himself by bashing the gay & after knocking the gay unconscious, he called the cops who arrested the homosexual for indecent exposure-Huffington Post, Daily Kos & lesbian columnist Pamela F. Spaulding all condemned him. That homosexual gets no sympathy because that homosexual committed a crime by harassing an underage teenage boy for sex in a public bathroom and the teenage boy defended himself. Since Daily Kos, Huffington Post and lesbian columnist Pamela F. Spaulding among others see nothing wrong with homosexuals committing crimes such as indecent exposure in public restrooms and condemn men who defend themselves against these crimes, I don’t trust media on the gay bashing topic, because too many make homosexuals look innocent victims no matter what wrong the gay does.

If a defense lawyer in a gay bashing case wants to raise a crime the gay did such as harassment, indecent exposure, etc. before man reacted violently, then that must be regarded in deciding verdict. As known with murder cases, there is Murder 1, Murder 2 and Manslaughter which is a jury topic. A jury can acquit or if they convict, they can convict a person on lesser charge. Jury decides if it’s justified or excess force. A rebuttal people make is that gay bashers will sometimes say things to justify their deeds such as saying the homosexual committed indecent exposure, harassment, stalking and so on and that it’s the gay basher’s side of story. Yes-but just as gay basher’s have interest to justify their deeds, gay bashing victims have interest to make themselves look like innocent victims. We don’t always know the other side of story and that is usually different from what homosexual says happened. Again if it’s true homosexual committed indecent exposure, harassment, stalking, etc. before men reacted violently, then the fact the homosexual committed a crime before he was bashed must be decided by jury in deciding if gay basher(s) used reasonable or excess force. I would rather have a case where a jury decides if a man’s reaction to bashing or killing a homosexual is justified or excess vs. the man doesn’t do enough and the gay does something worse.

  22. I technically am a homosexual, or a gay, but since I only ever have sex with my dog I can be spared the shame of being associated with homosexuals like Methew Shepard. I'm the product of incest (my parents are siblings) and I've decided to not live a sinful life as one who is same-sex oriented, and choose instead to release my sexual urges onto the family pet, which I mentioned is a dog. And the dog is a female, so what I'm doing isn't gay by any stretch.
