Rick Santorum Claims Liberal Americans Have 'Devalued' Marriage: LISTEN

Former presidential candidate and anti-gay speaker Rick Santorum appeared on "Eagle Forum Live," a radio program hosted by Phyllis Schlafly's daughter Anne Cori, and spoke up about the ways in which marriage has become "devalued" by the American public.

RickSantorumSantorum focused mostly on diction around marriage becoming associated purely with "romantic relationships" rather than reproductive purposes.

Right Wing Watch reports:

Rick Santorum said that conservatives need to “reclaim” marriage from the left and “the folks who are trying to change the marriage laws to allow same-sex couples...."

He also warned of polygamy: “If marriage is simply a romantic relationship between two people, and by the way, that’s what it’s devolved to the minds of a lot of Americans, if that’s all that marriage is well then it’s hard to make the argument that any two people or any three or four people shouldn’t be able to get married.”

Rants like his remind us just how tired and flaccid anti-marriage equality arguments have become. Perhaps the worst moment, though, came from Anne Cori, a woman who apparently detests the "celebration of single mothers." Bravo, Ms. Cori on this new low.

Listen in on the conversation, AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. then he said "i aborted my last baby because i was pretty sure that the law of numbers would mean that he's gay. and i'd rather my wife have an abortion than give birth to some kid who'd make us waste our money before he finally kills himself"

  2. The McDonnell's of Virginia have done more to "devalue" marriage than all of the gay folks in the world combined.

  3. I'll believe the conservative party line about marriage being about an institution for raising children the day Newt and Callista Gingrich have a child. They've been married since 2000, and it hasn't happened yet.

  4. Santorum needs to watch his words. The day will come that marriage equality for all couples will be in place and in the rearview mirror. And actual polygamists, who DO exist, will (and already have) seek to litigate their own issues. And Santorum basically says here that he will have no good argument. He must oppose polygamy for SOME reason. But here he just capitulates because he considers his own reasons too poor and weak.

  5. You know, I've heard that meme before, that having older brothers increases the odds on being gay. So, which of the Osmonds is? Jimmy? How about Andy Gibb? I guess that explains Michael Jackson?

And I'm the oldest and have only one younger brother. I always knew I was special, but didn't realize that I'd also beat the odds to turn out gay. lol

  6. CLAYTON: and look at Newt's track record before that!

  7. " Marriage has become devalued" by being 'only' romantic relationship.

Well I have news for you, closet case:
Same sex couples/marriages are more than romantic relationships; they involve kids and bank accounts and schools and mortgages and sports days and scout days and tennis days ..............

Santorum , you squat turd, I hope to phuck you rot in some stink hole in Uganda, for your high handed dismissal of our lives and our loves and our inalienable rights to equality before the law.

You and your ilk are the new abusers and history will call you that; abusive zealots.

  8. There's a very basic problem with his thesis. The highest divorce rates and least stable marriages are among red-state social conservatives, so if anyone is devaluing marriages it's those who share his "family values."

Maybe he should be more focused on why conservatives are so bad at keeping their families together and less focused on demonizing the liberals who more often succeed at marriage.

Polygamy is a tired red herring. Its history is heterosexual and patriarchal, so the leap from two-person marriage to polygamy can't be pinned on gay people.

Now, you're dismissed, Rick. Go back home and reflect on why you were voted out of office.

  9. How many times does it need to be said that Rick Santorum is a non-entity. If anything, he's devalued humanity with his bigotry and ignorance. An alien race wouldn't want to use him as a specimen of humanity because he's diseased and less than.

  10. "He also warned of polygamy"

Why? What could possibly be more Biblical than polygamy?

  11. Not only is polygamy a red herring that can't be pinned on allowing marriage equality for gay people, but it's a legal nightmare that could never happen in our society. What healthcare company would want to cover a spouse and his/her unknown number of husbands and wives?

  12. If bigotry had an odor, I wonder what Santorum and Cori would reek of...

  14. Wow, he acknowledges that a group of 3-4 people can have a romantic relationship? Big step there, Santorum, haha.

    Poly marriage woo!

  15. Anbroxan: I think it would smell pretty much like a mixture of stale cheese, burnt fecal matter and bad cologne, with a hint of dirty laundry and a soupçon of wet wool.

    A heady, complex mixture.

  16. Hmmm, if we are to have true equality then there should be gay polygamy since there is hetero polygamy. Or at least a gay menage a trois (a marriage of three, sort of a polygamy starter kit). And if you do recognize a regular menage a trois there has to be a homo relationship in there, thereby establishing the basis for gay marriage as well. Thanks Rick for the inspiration. And the lesson in convoluted logic!

  17. We could dismiss this shameless bigot more easily if he weren't constantly thrust in our faces by the mainstream media, who seem to consider him a viable political figure.

  18. but when his holier than thou wife was shacked up with an abortion doctor old enough to be her father that was okay

  19. Sorry, no. I have vowed to never listen to another word uttered by the stain on humanity which is Rick Santorum.

  20. "Reclaim" marriage?

I wasn't aware that anyone rustled up all the marriage and ran off with it. We should send a posse to hunt it down.

    Posted by: FuryOfFirestorm | Jul 31, 2014 5:51:19 PM

  21. Yes, we should be afraid of polygamy coming.............I think polygamy is illegal in every state, so as usual Mr. Santorum has no idea what he is talking about and is just blowing smoke up the asses of those few that may listen to him

  22. Marriage was devalued by straight people looooooooooooong before we gay people decided we wanted to be included in the crazy tradition.

    Posted by: I wont grow up | Jul 31, 2014 7:55:05 PM

  23. Oh yes, Rick Santorum. Whose wife had an abortion (oh, induced labor!), and they took the aborted fetus home to show off and slept with it. Crazy.

  24. I won't grow up - it's not crazy to want to be married to someone who you love and value. It's actually an honor.

    Please, grow up ok?

  25. If "liberal" means wealthy and powerful white men who want to dump their wives and marry over and over and over again, then I guess I agree.
