Wingnut Liberty Counsel Chairman Mat Staver said last weekend that the U.S. is on the verge of total destruction because of its acceptance of same-sex marriage and abortion, reports Right Wing Watch.

Last month, Mat Staver appeared before a congressional committee on threats to religious freedom to explain his justifications for discriminating against gay people.

Speaking at “Celebrate America” in Washington, D.C., Staver compared the U.S. to Pompeii and said that by accepting homosexuality and same-sex marriage, America is “moving into a direct attack on who God is.”

Staver went on to say:

"When you destroy human sexuality and when you destroy human life created in the image of God and you destroy God's creation of marriage as man and woman, husband and wife, male and female, when you destroy that, you destroy your understanding of who God is. That's where we are moving right now in America.”

Watch Staver say that same-sex marriage is a direct attack on god, AFTER THE JUMP…

I just read an article about goliath grouper fish in the July 2014 issue of the National Geographic. The article says: “Recently scientists discovered that some are ‘protogynous hermaphrodites,’ meaning they are born females but transform into males.”

Now I don’t know whether there is a god or not, but if there is, apparently god’s plan is not rigidly divided into male and female in these fish and in other species. And from what is known about the biology and psychology of humans, god’s plan for humans is not as rigidly divided into male and female as Matt Staver would have us believe.

I also don’t know anyone who is trying to destroy human sexuality or heterosexual marriage. As far as the other thoughts Staver strings together about the “image of God,” the traditional Christian belief about god is that god is spirit. Staver, on the other hand, paints the picture of an androgynous god, which fits in perfectly well (although he seems oblivious to the implications of his concept) with the LGBT reality of human sexuality.

Rational discourse is not the strong suit of Staver and his cohorts.

Staver’s “brand of Christianity” is the antithesis of everything I was taught as a child, i.e., his is evil to the core. The good news in all of this appears to be there’s no way in hell to turn back the clock on our civil rights progress. There are now too many of us with new found rights (and more to come) and too many of our allies for Staver and his cadre of homophobic haters to succeed.

If the men who go on these anti-choice rants knew the number of women in their audiences who have had abortions and the number of men related or known to women who have had abortions, they would keep quiet.

Outlawing abortion will not make it not happen.

And the percentage of men and women sitting in front of them who are gay and on the down-low or are gay period is also pretty high.

    He needs a reality check.

Well I guess being compared with Pompeii is a step up/away from Sodom and Gommorah.

But: “destroying your understanding of who god is “..?
I thought no one could understand god….[apart from John Milton explaining the works of god to man.]

And god is a “who” ?

This Staver is a presumptuous turd .

Mat Staver – a supposed straight man OBSESSED with Anythng and Everything GAY, especially Gay Men, Gay Male sex…..all things Gay……so sad, and pathetic.

  7. Reality-Based Reality says

Marriage Equality is an attack on ‘god’ in the sense that gays and lesbians in loving relationships with the need for legal rights and protections from the state are a reality; whereas ‘god’….not so much.

Anything that exposes religion as a fraud is a threat to their imaginary ‘god’, and even more dangerous to them, a threat to their livelihood and pocketbook. Frauds like Staver are fighting for their lifestyles.

He should go read his own bible and see what it ACTUALLY says about marriage and property or not marrying a virgin (that should be stoned to death), or having multiple wives, or concubines on the side.

Your claim of what marriage should be or what god says it should be is NOT what the bible says it should be.

Collect your parting gift. Thanks for playing. Buh-bye.

If God really hated the stuff they say He does, He would have cleaned house a long time ago. Perhaps he wants us to try to get along without His intervention? No, that would take too much effort on our part.

I guess I keep wondering which God Mr. Staver keeps referencing because the god I know, pray to and believe in is a loving and supportive god-maybe Mr. Staver should pray to a different god………

The earth’s diameter is about 12.7 million meters. The visible universe is that part of it within about 13 billion light years of the earth, and a light year is about 10^16 meters.

For any “god” that created a universe that large to be worried about the marital arrangements of two critters roughly 2 meters tall living on one planet revolving around one star in a galaxy about 100,000 light years in diameter with roughly a couple of hundred billion stars (and maybe a lot more, but there is a lot of uncertainty in the estimate) is mind-boggling.

@acorlando : sure we can subpoena God to testify. If he travels here at the speed of light from some random point in the universe, the sun will have burned out before he gets here, making the subpoena mute.

Gays have come out on the coasts of this country. People in those coastal states have gotten to know gays as people, and that they are a lot like straight people –same aspirations, same interests, same generally decent people….
Whereas in these yokum states, like Kentucky, Indiana and Arkansas, the atmosphere for coming out is really quite bad… so people stay in the closet, which results in most of the people in these states having the mentality that gays are all like Liberace… or like Satan… so they are supportive of laws that ostracize gay people. Eventually –maybe 100 years from now– people in these yokum states will start to come out and the hate for gay people will dissipate. Hasn’t that been the pattern of social progress over the last 200 years in this country… first things change up north and on the west coast…then the mid-west… then the plains states and then the south…. (sometimes MUCH MUCH later).
