On This Week George Stephanopoulos sat down with Texas Governor Rick Perry and asked the Republican about his stance on gays serving openly in the military.
In 2011, President Obama ended the discriminatory policy known as ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell' (DADT) that prevented gay men and women from serving openly. In his 2012 bid for the Republican presidential nomination, Rick Perry released a now-infamous ad titled “Strong” in which Perry stated, “There's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military.”
Speaking with Stephanopoulos on Sunday, Perry first addressed the Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage, saying,
“I agree with the 4 justices that were on the losing side of that decision. This is issues that needs to be decided by the states…I'm very clear from my stand that I believe in traditional marriage.”
Having not answered the question on DADT, Stephanopoulos pressed him further, which prompted this response from Perry:
“I have no reason to think that's going to be able to be done…that clearly has already…the horse is out of the barn.”
We're not sure exactly how or why Perry doesn't think that the ‘horse is out of the barn' on same-sex marriage seeing as how it's legal in all 50 states and same-sex couples in all those states (as far as we can tell) have availed themselves of their constitutional rights as guaranteed in Obergefell v. Hodges.
