Sarah Palin Links Iraq to 9/11, Clueless on the Bush Doctrine
McCain running mate Sarah Palin is receiving poor marks on her knowledge of foreign affairs and policy based on remarks she made at a 9/11 troop ceremony yesterday and excerpts from a 20/20 interview airing tonight.
Yesterday, at the ceremony to send her son to Iraq, McCain running mate Sarah Palin linked the war in Iraq to 9/11, the Washington Post reports, "telling an Iraq-bound brigade of soldiers that included her son that they would 'defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.'"
Writes the WaPo's Anne Kornblut: "The idea that the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein helped al-Qaeda plan the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a view once promoted by Bush administration officials, has since been rejected even by the president himself."
Her knowledge of foreign policy faltered in her interview with ABC's Charles Gibson as well.
Excerpts of the interview, which will air tonight on 20/20, were released last night. You can read them here.
Before offering Charles Gibson "a blizzard of words" on whether or not she believes the U.S. has the right to preemptive strikes, Sarah Palin is stumped when Gibson asks her about the cornerstone of Bush's foreign policy known as 'the Bush doctrine.'
It's no wonder they're not letting her talk to anyone.

9/11: Our Sad Anniversary

Today, of course, is a day we will all remember for the rest of our lives.
The plans for the museum that will occupy the site of the 9/11 memorial were unveiled yesterday. Its centerpiece will be two 90-ft trident structural elements that survived the twin towers' collapse in 2001:
"'The two tridents placed side by side will create an immediate visual reference to the distinctive ‘Gothic arch’ motif of the twin towers,' [design firm] Snohetta said in a statement of its architectural intentions, 'and, in their re-erection at the site, will convey strength, fortitude, resilience, survival and hope.' The pavilion will serve as the entrance to the subterranean exhibition galleries of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center. As the only part of the museum that is above ground, the pavilion will be highly visible from the surrounding streets and from the landscaped memorial plaza and pools that will wrap around it on three sides...In the northwest corner will be an atrium, running the height of the building and enclosed in an angular framework of glass and steel. This will house the tridents, which are currently stored in a hangar at Kennedy International Airport, and allow them to be seen from within the museum and from around the plaza — especially after dark, when they will be illuminated. 'When they’re lit at night, they will guard the site,' Ms. Greenwald said. 'They’re like sentries.'"
Barack Obama released the following statement in remembrance of this seventh anniversary:
"Today, we honor the memory of the lives that were lost on September 11, 2001, and grieve with the families and friends who lost someone they loved in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We will never forget those who died. We will always remember the extraordinary efforts of our firefighters, police and emergency responders, and those who sacrificed their own lives on Flight 93 to protect their fellow Americans. And we give thanks for the Americans defending us every day in our communities at home, and in our military abroad. On 9/11, Americans across our great country came together to stand with the families of the victims, to donate blood, to give to charity, and to say a prayer for our country. Let us renew that spirit of service and that sense of common purpose. Let us remember that the terrorists responsible for 9/11 are still at large, and must be brought to justice. Let us resolve to defeat terrorist networks, defend the American homeland, stand up for the enduring American values that we cherish, and seek a new birth of freedom at home and around the world."
I wasn't able to find one on McCain's site but if anyone can, please send it along.
The two candidates will pay their respects at Ground Zero today and then participate in a forum on public service this evening, in separate conversations with managing editor of Time magazine Richard Stengel.
In other news, the Bush White House has apparently changed its tune about who the "mastermind" was behind 9/11.
It's apparently not Osama bin Laden anymore but Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who's sitting in jail right now, according to spokeswoman Dana Perino.
In September 2006, former Bush spokesman Tony Snow stated that bin Laden was the mastermind. Just one more push by the Bush administration to rewrite their failed history.
Keith Olbermann made a searing commentary about the leaders in our country who have hijacked 9/11.

Unable to find a seat at Starbucks, Chelsea Clinton takes her java to the floor.
The city museum of The Hague pulls exhibit featuring Muhammed depicted as gay: "The picture, made by Iranian artist Sooreh Hera, is entitled Adam and Ewald and shows two gay men wearing masks of the Muslim prophet Mohammed and his son-in-law Ali. It is part of a photoseries the Gemeentemuseum has included in the 7up exhibition due to open on December 15. The Gemeentemuseum’s director Wim van Krimpen told reporters the museum is interested in purchasing Hera’s complete series, which he called 'high quality works of art'. However, he added he will not exhibit Adam and Ewald in the next few years because 'certain people in our society might perceive it as offensive'." After the teddy bear incident in Sudan, is anyone surprised?

Did Morgan Spurlock find Osama bin Laden?

This is the first image from Where in the World is Osama bin Laden, the forthcoming documentary from Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) which chronicles his scouring of the Middle East for the 9/11 terrorist.
SlashFilm reports: "Many people are speculating that Spurlock may have done what the U.S. government has been unable to do, and actually found Bin Laden. The film’s director of photography, Daniel Marricone added fuel to the fire, telling the press that Spurlock 'definitely got the holy grail.' Not much information has leaked about the film, and even the director is keeping quiet. When asked if the rumors, Spurlock would only say 'Until there’s something to see, why talk about it?'"

Illustrated Book on Father Mychal Judge Arrives for 9/11 Anniversary
Kelly Ann Lynch, whose family was counseled over the years by gay priest Mychal Judge, has published a 32-page illustrated biography of the religious figure entitled He Said Yes: The Story of Father Mychal Judge, the Associated Press reports:
"Lynch, in a simple, straightforward style, details how Judge picked up congregants for his far-flung flock at every stop: suburban families and the homeless; AIDS patients and alcoholics; firefighters and a paralyzed police officer; the loved ones of those killed aboard TWA Flight 800. The tale ends on Sept. 11, 2001, when Judge became the first official victim of the terrorist attack that killed 2,750 people in the twin towers. His dying soon gave life to Lynch's remembrance."
Judge, whose passing last year was marked on the anniversary by a documentary, The Saint of 9/11, worked tirelessly in New York to help others overcome addiction, poverty, and personal struggles before he became a symbol of the selfless heroes in the WTC attacks. The film tried to make the case for Judge's sainthood.
Said Lynch of her new book: "Those first few weeks, it was hard to see anything good. It just felt so dark and so sad and so empty. He left behind a legacy for all of us. I took the most important parts of his story, and tried to simplify it. His story was meant to be shared. He made you feel that you were the one special person in his life. What we've come to realize, six years later, is that he did that for everybody. He was a constant presence."

Number of American Troops Killed in Iraq Exceeds 9/11 Deaths
The number of American troops killed in Iraq (2,977) now exceeds the number of civilians killed (2,973) on 9/11.
The grim milestone came on Christmas day: "President Bush has said that the Iraq war is part of the United States' post-Sept. 11 approach to threats abroad, and that going on the offense against enemies before they could harm Americans meant removing the Taliban from power in Afghanistan, pursuing members of al-Qaida and seeking regime change in Iraq. Democratic leaders point out that there has not been any credible evidence linking Iraq to the Sept. 11 attacks and have said the war in Iraq detracted from efforts against al-Qaida and other terrorist groups."
Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to face down Iran, discoveries of torture evidence remain commonplace, and it looks likely that Saddam Hussein may hang within a month.
And our armed forces are so stretched to the limit that the Pentagon is considering outsourcing them.
What answers will Bush's "listening tour" have provided? Find out in January.

'Tracy would always be drinking when I arrived,' Scotty told Mann. 'He'd get so loaded. He'd sit there at the table drinking from five o'clock in the afternoon until two in the morning, when he'd fall onto the bed and ask me to join him. ... And in the morning he'd act like nothing happened.'"

Ted Rall: Homoeroticism Okay for Feds as Long as it's Torture
Ted Rall takes a half-sarcastic look at the Bush administration's fascination with sickening, homoerotic torture techniques in light of the President's attempts to "clarify" wording in the Geneva Conventions. Here's a bit:
"In order to work in American military intelligence, it seems, you really have to like looking at wet naked men with hard, erect nipples. In particular, it helps to be into wet naked Middle Eastern men. As a guy who looks away from other dudes in locker rooms, I doubt I'd fit in.Now one right-wing Republican, George W. Bush, is fighting a gang of right-wing Republican senators over homoerotic torture tactics. The debate isn't about whether, but rather what kind, of homoerotic torture ought to be permissible. Bush is pretty much a whatever-it-takes, pro-flashlight-raping freak. Senators John McCain and John Warner are a little more vanilla. They want to set a few limits.
Very few limits.
Jeffrey H. Smith, ex-general counsel for the Clinton-era CIA, says the senators are OK with the current menu of torture. "The senators seem to be prepared to allow some techniques, but not nearly as many as the administration wants," he told The New York Times. Bush, on the other hand, wants to allow just about any form of pain infliction the human mind can conceive."
U.S. Generals want a clear definition too. Others, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell and five former Joint Chiefs of Staff, think our country should obey the Geneva Conventions, for what we do unto others may be done unto us. Though many of his other decisions seem rooted in the Bible, that concept seems somewhat beyond Theocrat Bush.

The Gay Americans of 9/11
Here's a sad and informative tribute that went up yesterday at the Republic of T that looks at the tragedy from a gay and lesbian perspective.
Said Terrance: "Like I said, I was sure as I watched the events unfold that somewhere there was another gay man or lesbian watching and wondering, or perhaps knowing with certainty, that a partner wasn't going to be coming back home. I was pretty sure there were couples who died together that day, and I thought about it a month later when the hubby and I boarded a plane for Hawaii (where, unbeknownst to me, he would present me with a ring). By then I knew of at least one gay family that had died together on one of the planes that day..."
And, tragically, so many more...

9/11: There Will Be No Forgetting
That morning I woke up earlier than usual, around 6 am to a beautiful day in Los Angeles. When I look back now it's as if I was roused by some silent alarm. I had hardly been awake for more than five minutes when the phone rang. A friend was on the other line. "Turn on the television," he said...
Divided World Remembers September 11 Attacks: "A divided world remembered the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks Monday, with allies promising to fight fanaticism, critics saying U.S. policies had fanned more violence and a militant leader promising "new events."...Monday's outpouring of emotion reflects an international landscape vastly changed since terrorists hijacked four airliners in 2001, crashing two into New York's World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon and another into a Pennsylvania field." [ap]
Daniel Libeskind, architect of the Freedom Tower, on the rebuilding of Ground Zero and the drama that surrounds it, which he likens to "a novel, a cheap novel.": "For many, Sept. 11 has become very abstract. People forget already what this was all about. They think it’s about pretty facades and square-footage prices. They don’t remember anymore that it’s about people who perished, it’s about America, it’s about some pretty big ideas."

The Path to 9/11 ABC "docudrama" update: ABC airs edited version of 9/11 film.
Joel Meyerowitz talked to the Boston Globe about Aftermath: World Trade Center Archive, a book of 400 photographs culled from more than 8,000 he shot at Ground Zero for nine months after the attacks: "When I first started to do it, I just couldn't get enough of it. I'm almost embarrassed to say, it was so vitalizing to me as a person and as an artist. I felt young again. I felt a passion I'd felt in the '60s, when I couldn't wait to get back out on the street...I was probably never more at ease making photographs, because I subsumed some aspect of my normal working methods. I felt this thing is going to write itself. I did not want to editorialize or in any way inflate it with a personal sense of drama or the profound...I have a weird connection to ground zero. I get within a few blocks of it and it's as if I can smell it. Even though there's nothing to smell, I get that memory whiff of dust and burning and all of the combinations that were blended, all those things burning. It all comes back to me."

The Path to 9/11 Gets More Crooked
After Disney execs met throughout the weekend "debating what changes would be made and what concessions should be given" to the upcoming film The Path to 9/11, an email was sent to conservative blogger Hugh Hewitt from an ABC insider with the assurance that "The average viewer would not be able to tell the difference between the two versions" and "the message of the Clinton Admin failures remains fully intact."
If you missed my post of yesterday, the "objective docudrama" in question reportedly contains several key scenes that were "completely fabricated" and intend to rewrite history by suggesting that the Clinton administration had Osama bin Laden cornered in Afghanistan at one point and let him get away.
Three top Clinton administration officials have urged ABC to revise or cancel the series. Although plenty of right-wing bloggers received advance copies of the film, requests from Clinton, Albright, and Berger were denied.
Even the film's writer has admitted that portions of what should have been treated in a factual manner had it been based completely on what was in the 9/11 Commission Report, were completely made up:
"Sandy Berger did not slam down the phone," writer Cyrus Nowrasteh told KRLA-AM in Los Angeles, "That is not in the report. That was not scripted. But you know when you’re making a movie, a lot of things happen on set that are unscripted. Accidents occur, spontaneous reactions of actors performing a role take place. It’s the job of the filmmaker to say, 'You know, maybe we can use that.'"
However, facts are apparently not a part of the right-wing agenda of this film.
A former Bush counterterrorism offical, Roger Cressey, appeared on Scarborough Country Tuesday night to talk about the film: "So, if they want to critique the Clinton administration and the Bush administration, based on fact, I think that’s fine. But what ABC has done here is something straight out of Disney and fantasyland. It’s factually wrong. And that’s shameful."
Reps Conyers, Dingell, Harman, and Slaughter have written to ABC demanding inaccuracies be addressed.
UPDATE:
ABC issues disclaimer, which they say will run throughout the film: "The following movie is a dramatization that is drawn from a variety of sources including the 9/11 Commission Report and other published materials, and from personal interviews. The movie is not a documentary. For dramatic and narrative purposes, the movie contains fictionalized scenes, composite and representative characters and dialogue, as well as time compression."

"Objective" ABC 9/11 Docudrama Contains Lies
The Path to 9/11, a docudrama set to air for millions on the fifth anniversary of the attacks that changed this country forever, contains a scene that suggests President Bill Clinton let Osama bin Laden escape. According to Richard Clarke, former counterterrorism czar for Bush I, Clinton and Bush II, and now counterterrorism adviser to ABC, the scenario, in which Clinton's National Security Adviser Sandy Berger refuses to give the order to kill Bin Laden when he is cornered by CIA agents in Afghanistan, never occurred. It was completely made up by writer Cyrus Nowrasteh.
Both Richard Ben-Veniste — one of the 10 members of the independent Sept. 11 commission, and Sandy Berger have denounced the scene. Said Berger:" It’s a total fabrication. It did not happen."
There are other troubling inaccuracies as well.
Is it any surprise then, that advance copies of Path to 9/11 have only been sent out to Republican bloggers and not Democratic ones? Said Americablog: "...the fact that ABC is only targeting Republicans with this anti-Clinton TV show is prima facie evidence that this is nothing more than one big fat campaign contribution from ABC/Disney to the Republican party. A contribution grotesquely wrapped in the ashes of nearly 3,000 Americans."
An interview with the show's writer reveals an obvious right-wing bias. Have Disney and ABC become tools of the right wing?
So on September 10th and 11th, millions of Americans are to be spoon-fed this bit of rewritten history. And we have still not captured Osama bin Laden.
In a related kicker to this news, it was reported yesterday that Pakistan, the Bush administration's so-called "ally" in the war on terror, would not take Bin Laden into custody "as long as [he] is being like a peaceful citizen." See video.
Yesterday, Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY-28), Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee, released a statement condemning the program's "documentary" billing: "ABC has a responsibility to make clear that this film is not a documentary, and does not represent an official account of the facts surrounding the September 11th attacks," Rep. Slaughter said. "Disclaimers noting that The Path to 9/11 is a docudrama should be shown throughout its airing. We have yet to establish the impartiality and accuracy of the people behind this film and the claims it advances, and the American people need to know that...But what is far more important is the timing of this movie," Rep. Slaughter continued. "The anniversary of the attacks is an emotional time, and it is wrong for anyone to play on those emotions and use them to advance a political agenda."
Tell ABC to tell the truth about 9/11.
