Elton John, David Furnish, And 'True Blood' Creator Alan Ball Joining Forces On New HBO Show 'Virtuoso'

EltonDavidCalling all attractive, young musicians! Elton John, hubby David Furnish, and master of television Alan Ball want you to star in their (yes, their) upcoming HBO drama, Virtuoso. Set in 1790's Vienna at an elite music academy, the pilot episode of the new show will have this amazing gay trifecta backing it and they are currently seeking out stars.

Show Biz 411 reports:

The academy is run by our old friend from “Amadeus,” Mozart’s nemesis Antonio Salieri. There’s lots of music, ruffled shirts and sex of all kinds. There are probably a lot of candelabras set on ornate pianos, too. Knowing Ball, a whole universe will be set up for the musicians, the teachers, and the wealthy music patrons of Vienna. Sounds like there might be a lot of private recitals and lessons, as well...

The cable network is also in a deal now with Mick Jagger’s company for a series about rock music in the ’70s with “Boardwalk Empire” writer Terry Winter.

Sounds like fans of Ball and Winter's previous ventures have a lot to look forward to in the coming years. And perhaps Sir Elton will make a virtuosic piano appearance himself? One can only hope.

Will you be tuning in to Virtuoso? Sound off in the comments below!

'True Blood' Stage Musical in the Works

Trueblood

True Blood is ending this season but it may find life after death as a stage musical, the Guardian reports:

Nathan Barr, speaking at the premiere of the final season, said that he'd pitched the idea for a musical version to the show's creator Alan Ball. Barr has composed the instrumental music for the show's seven seasons, and created some sample versions of musical numbers along with British actor Stephen Moyer who plays the vampiric lead in the show.

"I think we're really going to try to return to the roots of the show," Barr said, admitting "there are no guarantees" that it would ever reach the stage. "But I think the direction we're heading in is really exciting."

Ball must finish his Chippendales film first however, and is also planning a film about a male genie called I Dream of Gene, the Guardian adds.

Ben Stiller Might Star In Alan Ball's 'Chippendales' Flick

Actor Ben Stiller is in talks to play gay choreographer Nick DeNoia in gay director Alan Ball’s I Am Chippendales, a film about how Chippendales became the most famous male stripper venues of all time.

Ben_stillerCinemaBlend elaborates:

If Magic Mike has taught us anything, it's that there's an audience for movies about male strippers. But it sounds like I Am Chippendales will go beyond the stage to dig into the founding and expansion of the Chippendales night club and the eventual controversy related to attempted arson, racketeering and murder-for-hire, linked co-owner Somen "Steve" Banerjee.

Variety says Ben Stiller (Keeping the Faith), is in negotiations to play the role of Nick DeNoia, "the former choreographer/partner who helped conceive the idea for the dance troupe with Banerjee and attorney Brian Nahin." He also played a big part in expanding the act on a global level.

Ball — who is set to  direct, produce and adapt the script based on Rodney Sheldon’s book — is one of the minds behind the TV shows Six Feet Under, True Blood and the Oscar-winning film American Beauty.

True Blood will end its run in 2014, HBO announced today, the HuffPost reports:

“'True Blood' has been nothing short of a defining show for HBO," Michael Lombardo, president of programming at HBO, said in a statement. "Alan Ball took the books by Charlaine Harris, assembled a brilliant cast led by the magnificent Anna Paquin in the role of Sookie Stackhouse, and crafted a show that has taken its many devoted fans on an Unforgettable journey. Alan passed the baton to Brian Buckner, who led our fantastic writers and crew in crafting a spectacular sixth season, and he will lead us through the seventh and final season of this amazing show. Together with its legions of fans, it will be hard to say goodbye to the residents of Bon Temps, but I look forward to what promises to be a fantastic final chapter of this incredible show."

Said Alan Ball: “From the moment I read Charlaine’s books, I thought there was potential for something really special. Then our amazing writers, cast and crew brought her world to life in a way that exceeded my wildest expectations. I’m deeply grateful to HBO for being true partners and collaborators, and, of course, to the viewers who chose to spend Sunday nights in Bon Temps with us."

Rick Santorum Inspired Chris Meloni's Blood-Sucking Theocrat Vampire in 'True Blood'

Meloni

True Blood creator Alan Ball discusses how Rick Santorum inspired the current season, in an interview with The Wrap.

Tacoma_santorumHow did you map out this season?

For me the jumping off point was watching the Republican primaries, watching Michelle Bachman, Rick Santorum, and asking what would it be like  to have a theocracy in America – which is way more terrifying than any fictional monster could ever be.

Our jumping off point was "OK, what is a vampire theocracy?" You don’t really see vampires being religious creatures. They are excluded from God. But what if there was  a vampire bible? A religion? Theocracy? How would that impact our human  characters, or vampire characters?  I haven’t really seen that before.

Why Rick Santorum?

What’s terrifying is how many people agree with him.

Chris Meloni comes in, he is the guardian of the blood. Supposedly they have a vial of blood of the first vampire – like a Catholic icon. The governing body of vampires is like the Catholic church plus the Supreme Court for vampires. But it’s a very secret organization.
