MSNBC Cancels Alec Baldwin's Show Amid Fallout from Anti-Gay Slur

Baldwin

Alec Baldwin's MSNBC show has been canceled amid fallout from his use of an anti-gay slur last week. But it was more than just that, the NY Post's Richard Johnson reports:

Baldwin’s dismissal was decided on partly because of his diva-like behavior toward co-workers, a source said.

Besides demanding a humidifier because he claimed the air at 30 Rock was too dry, Baldwin alienated staffers when he demanded a separate makeup room being used by a woman with cancer who is sensitive to hairspray.

When Baldwin was told he couldn’t have his way, he allegedly bellowed at the top of his lungs, “I don’t give a f - - k if she has cancer or not, I want that f - - king makeup room.”

Baldwin indicated the show might be at risk in a HuffPost piece he wrote last week defending himself.

Dan Savage Goes Off on Catholic Priests, Alec Baldwin, and the Cheneys with Bill Maher: VIDEO

Savage_maher

Dan Savage sat down with Bill Maher to talk about "buttloads" of gay stuff, including religious officials, like a priest, who testified in Hawaii that gay marriage will harm children.

Replies Savage:

"He's confusing children who were raised by gay parents with children who were raped by Catholic priests."

Savage also lays in to Mary Cheney and Heather Poe:

"Mary does a pretty good approximation of evil, however...They're wealthy dykes who until ten minutes ago couldn't give a flying f--k about the rights of same-sex couples in the state where they live or any other state. $2500 check to Mitt Romney in 2012. Voted for Mitt Romney in 2012...Romney was a thousand times worse than Liz and Mary wrote that f--ker a check."

The conversation then moves to Alec Baldwin and his hair-trigger homophobia.

Alec Baldwin Introduces 'My Lover, Matt': VIDEO

Matt_baldwin

This morning we reported on a talk Alec Baldwin gave at a tech conference in San Francisco in which he attempted to use humor to defuse tension over his recent use of an anti-gay slur.

Following a statement of contrition, Baldwin pointed out a member of his posse and asked him to stand up, identifying the man as "my lover, Matt".

Baldwin then went on to describe how he loves men but not in a sexual way.

Alec Baldwin Professes His Love for a Man: 'I Want You to Be My Lover, Matt'

At a technology conference in San Francisco yesterday, Alec Baldwin jokingly referenced the controversy over his use of the phrase "c--ksucking fag" by doing this, the AP reports:

A_baldwin"I want you to be my lover, Matt," Baldwin told a member of his entourage after asking him to stand up. "I love you, Matt. I love you in that way."

After the packed audience's laughter died down, Baldwin added that he has loved some men more than women during his life, although never in a sexual way.

The Emmy-winning actor prefaced his moment of levity with plenty of contrition as he sought to minimize any lingering damage to his career from the fallout after a confrontation with a photographer outside his New York home last week.

Baldwin made the remarks at an appearance for ServiceSource. He added:

"If in any context in the world that we live in today, if any word is remotely offensive to people, then I'm perfectly willing to learn a different word...There is a drive-by justice to the Internet society. They indict you, convict you and hang you on the same day."

Anderson Cooper, Andrew Sullivan Blast Alec Baldwin for Homophobic Slur: VIDEO

Anderson Cooper stepped up his criticism of Alec Baldwin in a Monday night segment that also featured blogger Andrew Sullivan, who last week wrote several posts criticizing Baldwin for calling a photographer a "c--ksucking fag".

Said Cooper to his panel:

"If Alec Baldwin had yelled the N word to that photographer or yelled an anti-Jewish slur against that photographer, it would be over. But the F word is a word that kids are called in school every single day. Teachers often do nothing about it."

Added Sullivan:

"And it's important to note that all this stuff is laced with a threat of violence. All of these instances are also about 'I'm going to get you.'"

Baldwin's show was suspended for two weeks by MSNBC over his use of the slur. In a Huffington blog post over the weekend, he defended himself of charges he is a "homophobic bigot", but also couldn't resist a potshot at Anderson, saying:

But if the show dies, its fate ends up being no different than the vast majority of start-up TV programming, and so be it. We do take a small amount of pride in knowing that we beat CNN in the ratings each of our nights. (I forget who they had on at that time.)

Ireland Baldwin Defends Her Father from Homophobia Charges on Twitter

In a series of tweets, Ireland Baldwin (Alec's daughter from Kim Basinger) defended her father on Twitter over the weekend, writing:

Ireland_baldwinSometimes we let our tempers get the best of us. Tempers are like wildfires. Something or someone can easily fuel the fire...It takes a lot of strength for someone to release their anger. It takes a lot of strength and SUPPORT for someone to grow and become a......better person. We all say things we don't mean. We all say things we can't take back...For someone who has battled with anger management issues, my dad has grown tremendously. My dad is far from a homophobe or a racist. From what you've read and from what media has been shoved down your throats, he has a kind heart. Having paparazzi following my mom and I has not been thrilling. Paparazzi can bring out many confined feelings of anger and spite out of anyone.

My point being, what my dad said was WRONG. What my dad felt WASN'T. Boundaries have to be made. Paparazzi have jobs to do, but some of them jeopardize people's lives and cross a line. My dad has an INFANT CHILD to protect. All the parents out there should understand. You would do anything to protect your baby. Now, let's all quit acting like children. Let my dad be and let him have his room to learn and enjoy his family. As someone very wise once said, "Be peaceful and love everyone" COME ONNNN EVERYONE. Let's just all be thankful that we are alive!

Baldwin's tweets appeared as the actor was defending himself of charges he is a "homophobic bigot" in a blog post at the Huffington Post.
